Thoughts

Zane

I pace the room I have taken, thinking over the plans, determining all the flaws and thinking of ways to fix them. It is a common habit of me to do that I developed as a young boy.

I didn't really need Haymitch, but he intrigues me. Anyway, who knows? Maybe he might come of use sometime.

I flip the plans over through my head until I get bored, then take a seat and look out the window, imagining ways to hit the rebel side the hardest. I knew that if I took away their Mockingjay, they would be devastated, but I needed to do it the right way. I wanted to hit Katniss hard too. And the way to hit Katniss was to kill someone she loved.

I close my eyes and work through the relationships she had. Her mother? No, too hard to get to. Melanie? I already had her, but I wanted her to see Katniss die. Suddenly it comes to me. I don't know how I didn't see it before.

Peeta.

It was perfect. The best way to hit the girl on fire in the heart. Kill the boy with the bread. All we needed to do was give him some bait an he'd come right out to save her.

But I needed a back up. The baker boy was smart. If he escaped, I needed a backup. Someone else she cared about.

I click my fingers.

The hunter.

It was perfect. If I had both her lover boys, I could make her do anything. I could make her do anything. An idea occurs to me. A brilliant idea. An incredible idea.

I smile and stand up, walking to the door. I open it and the two guards on duty turn around. I step out and start walking down the hallway. The guards, unsure of whether to leave there post of follow and guard me look hesitant. I roll my eyes.

"Hurry up." I say agitated and they quickly walk to catch up to me. We pass the other rooms and then march into the dining room where Haymitch is leaning against the wall, drinking some whiskey.

I nod my head to him as we pass. "Haymitch." I greet.

"Zane." He takes a sip of whiskey. "What are you doing at this hour of the day, may I ask?"

I smile at him.

"I'm about to ruin a mockingjay's heart."

Katniss

Haymitch was a traitor.

I couldn't think of anything else. All that filled me was rage. All he did was for himself. Don't kill me and give me some liquor, and I'm alright to stab people in the back.

There was still one line that he had said that was stuck in my head. This isn't the first time I've stabbed her back.

It filled me with hurt and anger, but also curiosity. What did he mean by that? Was he just saying it to ensure the deal with Zane, or was it something else, that wasn't a lie. Every time I thought about it, my thoughts kept referring back to Prim. Then tears would pull at the back of my eyes and I would push the memories away to stop them from coming. I couldn't cry. I had to be strong. For Melanie.

At the moment, she was sitting in the exact place where she and I had sat the night before Zane took over the train. Zane had shoved us in the room at the back of the train and locked the door. He was probably upset that there was no dungeon on this luxury train. How strange. It had been 3 days since that happened. We were fed tiny meals, barely enough to keep us alive. I was used to it, being from 12, but Melanie wasn't coping well, seeing as she was from the Capitol.

I stand up and sit down next to Melanie, putting a hand on her arm.

"How're you doing?" I ask. She shakes her head.

"Horrible. How about you?" She looks at me and for a second, in the late afternoon sun her hair looks blonde and her eyes sparkle with that same dignity and hope that used to fill Prim's. Then the moment passes and I am left with a sad feeling in the pit of my stomach. I shake it off and smile.

"Are you kidding me? I'm trapped in a room with no where to go, heading who knows where, most likely to my death and the guy that knows all that is a murdering phycopath. I'm feeling brilliant."

That pulls a laugh out of her. I smile. She looks up at me and stops laughing, but the smile remains on her face.

"You're pretty when you smile." She says. I blush and she giggles. "It's not a bad thing you know."

Before I can say anything else, I hear a lock click. Melanie looks at the door, clearly hearing it too. The door opens and on instinct, I stand up in front of Melanie.

She grabs my arm and stands up next to me, looking me in the eyes.

"It's ok. I don't need to be shielded." She whispers to me.

I look at her with sad eyes and once again, she looks exactly like Prim. She hadn't needed my shielding, she had said. Yet she wasn't here. Tears once again pull at my eyes, but I force them to go and look back at the door.

A guard comes in, one of the giant men that Zane has convinced to work for him. The guard has a hard look and two thin long scars stretching from his chin to his temple.

"You have to come with me." he says to me gruffly.

"Why should I?" I ask, being my defiant self. Melanie glances at the gun on his hip in concern, gripping my arm.

"Zane wishes to speak to you." He replies simply.

"I don't want to talk to that murderer." I say.

The guard grabs the gun with one hand and looks me in the eyes. "Watch your mouth Everdeen."

"I'm not afraid of you." I say, keeping my defiance up.

He smirks. "You should be." In one simple movement, he flicks the gun out and points it at my chest. I flinch.

"Not so tough as you say you are, are you? I've shot you once, Everdeen. I won't hesitate to do it again. And you don't have any protective armor this time, do you?"

I look up at him with recognition for the first time.

"You're the person who shot her in district two." Melanie says, voicing my thoughts. He smirks and nods.

"Now come on, can't-kiss. Zane will be waiting."

He grabs my arm and pulls me out the door. Melanie lets go of my arm and I look back at her. Her eyes make her look concerned and lost. I mouth at her, 'I'll be back', and she nods, but doesn't look convinced.

Then the guard outside the door shuts and locks it and we are cut off from each other.

The man pulls me along all the way up the carriage and then past the next one. He leads me to the living room where Zane is sitting, drinking a mug of steaming liquid.

"Ahh, Katniss." He smiles. "Take a seat."

"I'd prefer to stand." I say. His smile is replaced by a frown.

"That wasn't a question. Take a seat." He says, more sternly this time. The guard pushes me towards the chair and I sit.

"Tea?" He asks, gesturing to a teapot on the table between us. I shake my head. He reminded me of president snow when he came to 'visit' district 12 and have a little 'chat' with me. My memory pulls up the sentence that changed my whole life.

"Oh Katniss. I thought we agreed not to lie to each other."

I shake my the line from my mind and try to focus on the present.

Zane takes a sip of his drink and looks at me.

"You are a problem miss Everdeen. You are still a hope for the districts. If we don't eliminate you, we will have an extreme problem. So we will have to eliminate you. But I had an idea." He stands up and starts circling me, still watching my every move.

"I thought, we have you now. Why not use what we have."

I get a sick feeling in my stomach.

"What are you proposing?" I ask, keeping my voice even.

"I need you to be on the inside. Leak us back the information."

"Why would I do that?" He laughs lightly and it sends chills down my back. At the moment, he is standing behind me. I swallow the lump in my throat, still looking forward.

"Oh my dear miss Everdeen." He chuckles once again and then leans in so his mouth is behind my ear. He whispers with such simplicity it makes me shiver. "Because we have those you love."

Suddenly, the screen on the wall behind Zane's chair flashes on to show two rooms, each made of concrete, and in each is a boy, each not wearing a shirt, each chained to the wall. And I recognize both boys.

Gale and Peeta.

I am breathless. One of them has blood dribbling down his lip and three whip marks running across his chest, also bleeding. And it's not the boy you'd think it would be.

"Peeta..." I whisper.

Zane smiles. "Yes. Suprisingly the baker boy was the stubborn one as we were bringing him in. So, of course, we had to punish his actions."

Zane walks back around to in front of me and kneels down, looking me in the eyes.

"Do as I say, or they," he turns and points at the screen, then looks back at me. "pay the price."

I swallow the lump in my throat and look at the screen, my eyes on Peeta's wounds.

"What do you need me to do?"

Zane smiles. "Smart decision Miss Everdeen." He stands up and starts circling me again. "Well, all you really need to do is do what we tell you when we tell you. They would never suspect their Mockingjay to be the leak. We are going to install a bluetooth in your ear."

"Install?" I used bluetooth's in the rebellion and when I took it out and disobeyed orders, Haymitch threatened to install it permanently in my ear but that's all it was. A threat. Actually having someone watching over me and listening to my conversations all the time, telling me what to do, that sends shivers down my spine.

"Yes. Install. We can't have you taking it out or breaking it, can we? Plus, if we didn't, the rebels would notice."

"You say rebels. What do you mean? How would you know whether there would be rebels."

He smirks. "Well, someone has leaked out the news that were going to cause another war. Already, the 'rebels' have organized and gotten themselves ready for the uprising. People have noticed you are missing, Everdeen, and Peetas disappearance also hasn't gone unnoticed. And if you just suddenly returned, questions would be asked. So here's your story. You and Melanie escaped and,"

"Wait, me and Melanie?"

"Yes." he rolls his eyes. "You really think they'll believe that you escaped on you own? No. Plus, I have nothing to do with her. So the girls going with you. But she can't know about any of this. We have to make it out as that to her. you have to do the big show for her, breaking out and running away. The guards will be in on it, and will pretend to try and catch you but you get away. Then you will be the Mockingjay. Plan the strikes, do commercials, do whatever they need you to do, but also do whatever we need you to do. And always remember. You are our Mockingjay, Katniss. Ours or else."

There's a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. I didn't need to be a genius to know what he meant by or else.

I wasn't the Mockingjay anymore. I was their Mockingjay.

Melanie

My head buzzes with thoughts. I try to keep my breathing even and quiet, so Zane, Katniss and the guard don't hear me but it takes all my will.

It wasn't very hard to slip out the door, past the guard. He seemed pretty agitated to be guarding the 'Capitol kid'. As soon as Katniss had left, I picked the lock and slipped out the door. The guard was asleep on the job. I could still hear Katniss and the mans steps going towards the dining room and I followed them, ducking into rooms every now and then to avoid being seen. Then I had stood outside the door as Zane opened up his plans to Katniss, and without knowing it, me.

My heart still races but I need to get back before they take Katniss back and before the guard wakes up. So I run. The guard is still leaning against the wall, his eyes closed. I slip past him and back into the room, re-locking the door behind me. About 20 seconds later I hear the footsteps coming towards the door.

"Tristan!" I hear the man leading Katniss shout. "What are you doing?"

I hear the guard by the door stutter, "She was just standing there and I was tired, I was just ahh..."

The door opens and the man shoves Katniss in, casting me a glance, then looking back at the guard.

"Oh forget it. But don't let me see you asleep on the job again."

"No sir. Never again." He stutters. The door closes and I glance at Katniss, but she doesn't meet my eyes. She just looks out the window, lost and broken.

I wouldn't blame her. They had someone she loved. Suddenly I realize something. I look at Katniss staring out the window, and my stomach sinks.

They had someone I loved as well.
