Chapter 31
"That was fun!" Gidget yipped joyfully, hopping off the piece of bark shaped like a bobsled. Dragging himself off with Tiny on his shoulders, Pops chuckled and declared, "Fastest way to get down a mountain, especially if you're in a hurry like you and your companion Puffball." Stumbling slightly, Tiberius groaned, "Then why do I feel so sick to my stomach?" The griffin felt like he was going to throw up at any second. Tilting his head to the side, Tiny pointed out, "You're turning green mister!"
"Maybe log riding isn't for everyone," Pops murmured thoughtfully. Sitting down before he could fall, Tiberius bowed his head and murmured, "Thank you for everything Pops." Her fluffy tail wagging, Gidget added, "Yes, thank you! I hope we can see you again soon!" Smiling softly, Pops replied, "Me too. And I wish you the best of luck on your journey. The great Hu will take you the rest of the way."
"The great Hu?" Tiberius and Gidget asked at the same time. Nodding his head, Pops explained, "The great Hu, the greatest of all the mythical creatures. He will help anyone in need, but you must seek him out first. There is no shame in asking for help. If anything, it is encouraged." Twitching his striped tail in understanding, Tiberius murmured, "Okay, we will find him."
"Safe travels. Tell your son I said hi," Pops replied. Wagging his nine tails, Tiny chimed in, "And me too! I think we'll be the bestest of friends!" Purring softly, Tiberius promised, "I will. Stop by the Forest for a visit whenever you can. You're always welcomed." Waving her paw, Gidget barked, "Bye bye, see you soon!" The pair watched as the ninetail pack moved on, heading for their next destination. Standing up, Tiberius murmured, "Ready Gidget?"
"Yes I am! Let's go save your son Joe," Gidget declared, marching along. Rolling his eyes, Tiberius corrected her, "His name is Norman." The two walked side by side into a foggy forest. With it still being early, they figured the fog would soon lift. But time seemed to pass by and the fog refused to lift. If anything, it seemed to get heavier. Looking around, Gidget mumbled, "Where are we?"
"I don't know. Which way did we come from?" Tiberius asked. He could already feel the panic setting in. Thankfully, Gidget saved the day as she piped up, "How about we retrace our footprints?" She gestured to her own. Sighing in relief, the griffin nodded his head. But before they could follow their own footprints, they witnessed the dog's paw print disappear into the ground. Her eyes round with fear, Gidget whimpered, "Is that normal?"
"What is this place?!" Tiberius cried, terror coursing through his veins. Panicking as he spun around in circles trying to find any familiar landmark, he felt himself hyperventilating. "Gidget we need to get out of here!" he exclaimed. Grabbing the griffin's tail, the fluffy white dog spoke reassuringly, "Calm down. Let's just ask him for directions."
"Ask who for directions?" Tiberius questioned. "This little guy of course!" Gidget answered, giggling. The griffin turned around to discover they had been joined by a pigeon. Her tail wagging, the fluffy white dog remarked, "Do you think this is who we were looking for?" Taking a seat, Tiberius rumbled, "If you're talking about my son, no this isn't him. If you're talking about the great Hu that Pops was telling us about, hate to break it to you but this is a pigeon."
"Oh great Hu, please help us find Nelson," Gidget pleaded, folding her paws together in prayer as she bowed to the pigeon. Tiberius rolled his eyes, knowing she hadn't listened. "Nothing happened, I told you it's a pigeon," he pointed out. Tapping her chin thoughtfully as she stared at the pigeon, Gidget murmured, "Perhaps I need to speak in his language."
"Gidget, it's a-" Tiberius started to say. However, he was quickly interrupted when Gidget began speaking slowly and deliberately, "Oh GrEaT hU, pLeAsE hElP uS." The pigeon cooed softly, tilting its head to the side. It seemed concerned for the dog. Tiberius felt the same way as he mumbled, "Gidget, what are you doing?"
"I'm speaking mythical creature. Duh," Gidget answered matter of factly. "No, you're speaking like... upset stomach. I should know cuz that's what mine sounded like this morning," Tiberius retorted. Twitching her ear, Gidget declared, "Hold on, I'm going to try a different dialect." Folding his talons together, Tiberius prayed, "Please, don't-"
"Hu, wE neEd yOur DivIne HelP," Gidget howled in a slightly off key singsong voice. Gesturing to Tiberius as she held a staring contest with the pigeon, she went on, "We aRe lOokIng For His Son NerO." Facepalming as he listened to the nonsense coming out of Gidget's mouth, Tiberius growled, "Gidget, not even heaven knows what you're saying. Please stop."
"I think we're getting somewhere. Maybe if I just..." Gidget mumbled thoughtfully before suddenly screeching, "PLeASe HElP Us OH gREaT Hu!" Tiberius thought for sure his ears were bleeding. The pigeon must've gotten spooked cuz it flew away. "Congratulations, you scared it off," the griffin muttered, rubbing his ears. Looking shocked and guilty, Gidget spoke softly, "I was trying to sound like a unicorn but it sounded more like a griffin."
"A griffin- I don't sound like that!" Tiberius spat. Looking up at him, Gidget asked, "Then what did it sound like?" Irritated, the griffin hissed, "It sounded like nothing I've ever heard before! Geez, I feel offended! I can't imagine how Hu must feel, wherever he is!" Getting up to her paws, Gidget yipped, "Let's go find him!" She started racing off. Scrambling to his feet, Tiberius shouted, "Gidget wait! You can't just run in fog!"
A yelp rang out from up ahead. It sounded like Gidget. Confused, Tiberius followed the sound when the ground disappeared underneath his feet. The next thing he knew, he was tumbling head over heels into a deep pit. Awaiting at the bottom was Gidget. Tapping the griffin on the beak, she commented, "Hey, how are you today?"
"Just terrific..." Tiberius muttered sarcastically, staring up at the opening of the hole several meters above their heads. They were stuck.
