Chapter 39 - [Complete Control]

Avaryn had decided to return to Lady Maryryna. He had decided to do what was wise and make sure she knew exactly what Avaryn wanted to do.

He thought that would be the right thing to do, just in case things went horribly wrong and Avaryn ended up having to fight the man.

Lady Maryryna deserved to know the truth, and he hoped the truth would give her some peace.

It was when he returned to her home that he noticed a couple of eyes watching him. They were Lumyryn guards of course, and Avaryn was annoyed that he didn’t notice them earlier.

But he figured there was nothing to worry about, he would be in and out before there could be any problems.

Lady Maryryna was still in Seliaryn’s room when Avaryn jumped through the window. She looked at him with a sad smile and Avaryn knew that she was preparing herself for horrible news.

So Avaryn let out a breath and gave her a gentle smile. “Aunty Mary…” He walked over to her and knelt down next to her. “I’m not going to kill your husband. At least, I’m going to try not to.”

     Her eyes widened. “What…”

“I’m going to ask him to abide to the law. I’m going to try and get him to realize the wrong he has committed.”

Now her eyes narrowed in confusion.

“Unfortunately… not only is he your husband but he is Seliaryn’s father… I have only recently started to mend things with Seliaryn and I don’t think killing his father is going to help that,” he said, “besides, I believe my father would have preferred this decision as well. I’m sure my father cared deeply about the man. He wouldn’t have asked him to be the Chief Advisor to the King if he didn’t, after all.”

     “Avaryn…”

“But… I understand that this may be difficult… Roviaryn is a hardheaded man. So I ask that you try to snap some sense into him–”

“I don’t think that’s going to work,” the Lady said, shaking her head. “I’ve… been trying to snap sense into him for six years–”

“But if we want to end this peacefully then we’re going to have to try harder.”

     She looked down.

“If you don’t try hard… then his death might be the only option. I know Roviaryn is a strong man but even if it takes my entire group of warriors… I’ll have to kill him.”

And just as he said it, a shudder ran through his spine as the unavoidable aura of Lord Roviaryn filled the room.

Avaryn stood up instantly and turned around, and behind him, Lady Maryryna stood up too.

“That’s quite some confidence you’ve got, Avaryn.” Roviaryn said, the stone cold stoic look on his face. “In my own home, talking about killing me?”

     Avaryn didn’t expect this.

Then the guards that were watching him flashed through his head and he cursed himself for his carelessness.

Lady Mary stepped around Avaryn. “My love–”

And Lord Roviaryn held his hand up, cutting her off.

Almost instantly she was subdued, freezing in her spot, her shoulders dropping and her eyes looking at the ground.

He looked at her. “You betrayed my trust.”

     She was crying.

Her tears didn’t faze Roviaryn in the slightest. “You swore to protect my secrets when we married. You broke that promise.” His face had no change in expression, he simply watched her, “and you step towards me and call me your love?”

Her fingers covered her face and Avaryn could just feel her heart break even more than it was already broken. He looked at the Lord, in hopes of defending his wife. “She did the right thing. You are in no place to criticize her.”

Roviaryn kept his eyes on his wife for a moment longer before he looked back at Avaryn. “And what are you going to do? I’m curious. Apparently you don’t want to kill me.”

     “Admit to your crimes.”

A tiny smirk appeared on the Lord’s face. “Alright.” He said. “I killed your father.”

Avaryn’s stomach burned in anger, but he held his rage back.

“However, it wasn’t my idea. It was Lyryn’s. Lyryn came to me years ago and proposed this plan and I liked it,” he simply said. “Of course, Lyryn hoped that his own son would become King and the royal name would continue down his own bloodline. But I knew that if his son was anything like his father –and he was everything like his father– then his reign wouldn’t last long. I knew that Dukaryn would end up getting himself killed and I decided to take advantage of that. Deciding that once the foolish boy is dead, my own son could take the throne.”

“But it did last. Six years.”

“Because Seliaryn, to my dismay, decided to become the right hand man to that fool,” Roviaryn said, “it’s my own son that prolonged that fools reign.”

     Avaryn frowned deeply.

So he was right about Roviaryn wanting Seliaryn to kill Dukaryn.

It was probably the only option Roviaryn thought he had left to get his son onto the throne.

“You must be satisfied now,” Avaryn said, “since Seliaryn is King.”

“Not exactly,” Roviaryn crossed his arms, “until you are dead, I cannot be completely satisfied.”

“I’m not going to challenge your son for the throne,” Avaryn said, “I don’t care for that sort of thing. Besides, I believe that Seliaryn will be a good king.”

Roviaryn kept on his stoic expression.

“But now that it is over, now that you’ve succeeded with your plans, admit that what you’ve done was wrong and turn yourself in.”

And for the first time, Avaryn heard the man laugh.

It was a deep laugh that sent a shiver through Avaryn.

When he had finished his laugh, he looked at Avaryn with a smirk. “You are just like your father.”

     Avaryn narrowed his eyes.

“Not only the splitting image… but even your mind. You think like your father, boy.”

“I take that as a compliment.” He said.

“Well, you shouldn’t. Because you’re going to get yourself killed.”

And the second he closed his mouth, he jumped at Avaryn with full force.

Maryryna surprised the both of them by jumping in front of Avaryn before Roviaryn could reach him.

But it didn’t take Roviaryn much effort to grab her arm with one hand and push her aside.

Avaryn dodged the attack with some difficulty, seeing that it caught him by surprise.

But he couldn’t just ignore Lady Maryryn as she easily crumpled to the ground. Avaryn dashed towards her, “are you okay?”

The weak woman nodded her head, but didn’t look at him.

Avaryn stood up, standing in front of Lady Maryryna. “You can’t treat your wife like that.”

     Roviaryn snorted.

“You know,” Avaryn suddenly said, “I know why you don’t like to admit that you feel love.”

“Enlighten me.” Roviaryn said, cracking his knuckles.

“Because if you did, you’d feel bad about the crimes you committed,” Avaryn said, pulling his fighting knives out. “After all, you killed a man who loved and cherished your wife even more than he did my mother. And maybe he’s also the one man that your wife loved more than she loved you.”

     Roviaryn smirked again.

“That’s why you refuse to admit your love. You don’t even want to admit it to yourself. Because you’re afraid it’ll make you regret your choices.”

“You caught me,” Roviaryn said, sarcastically.

And though Avaryn heard the sarcasm, he knew he was right. Because just before Roviaryn attacked him once again, a flash of emotion passed through the mans’ eyes.

Roviaryn attacked Avaryn with full force, not at all caring about his screaming wife –or at least, pretending he didn’t care,– and this was the first time that Avaryn really saw his strength first hand.

But Avaryn couldn’t just ignore that woman.

Was he going to have to try and kill this man right in front of her?

     How could he?

Besides Avaryn always knew this man was a force to be reckoned with. But now he knew he was more than that.

     Much more.

Avaryn was almost easily thrown around by this man, especially since Avaryn was actually avoiding trying to kill the man in front of his own wife, and it was Avaryn’s own strength that kept him from getting knocked off his feet.

But it was after countless dodges and failed attacks that Avaryn knew he couldn’t kill this man on his own, even if he wanted to.

     He was too strong.

And this room was too cramped.

Maybe if Avaryn could get him outside, he’d stand a chance…

“Why don’t you release your evil?” Roviaryn asked after knocking Avaryn away once again. It was in a mocking tone, almost as if Roviaryn knew what Avaryn had done with his evil not too long ago.

     He probably did know, though.

Avaryn, who was panting, narrowed his eyes, “why don’t you?”

Roviaryn smiled before a burst of darkness pushed away from his body with a force that knocked the still screaming Lady Maryryna to the ground and pushed Avaryn back against a wall.

And that was when Avaryn finally saw it.

The complete capabilities of this man.

Not a single tear of blood escaped his eyes and not a moment of focus was lost. Avaryn could see the misty darkness flowing around his fingers. His eyes remained white and he never lost control.

Avaryn knew no other Lumynos who could control their evil with such ease.

     Not a single soul.

It took a life of practice and dedication and patience.

Even more practice and dedication and patience than Avaryn was willing to offer.

This was nothing like Dukaryn’s release… Dukaryn was the symbol of what it was like to release ones evil… the symbol of a loss of control.

This man was the complete opposite.

Avaryn hesitated, debating now on whether or not he should release his evil.

But after a moment of contemplation, Avaryn had decided that there was no way that he would be able to use it to his benefit.

It had been too long since Avaryn had last used it.

He figured that it would barely help him in comparison to the help that Roviaryn was going to be getting.

He held his knives in front of him and watched as Lady Maryryna tried once again to stop her husband.

She grabbed hold of his arm tightly and shook it, as if thinking that a good shake would revert the release of his evil.

“You must stop, Ro!” She cried, “you killed Kyryn already! You cannot kill his son too! I won’t let you!”

An annoyed expression passed through the eyes of the Lord, “Maryryna, do not interfere." He pulled his hand away, almost knocking the woman over again.

But when she grabbed him again, the annoyed look turned into anger. He pulled his hand away and pushed her back, glaring. “Stay out of this!” He growled, loosing his temper, “you’ve done enough damage already!”

She stared in shock as Roviaryn attacked Avaryn before his wife could try and stop him once more.

His speed had increased ten fold and when Avaryn couldn’t avoid a punch fast enough, he was knocked away with a broken shoulder.

Avaryn stood up quickly, gasping for breath and holding onto his broken shoulder with his hand.

Without wasting another second, Roviaryn grabbed both of Avaryn’s fighting knives right out of his hands and tossed them aside. And as Avaryn tried to jump away, Roviaryn grabbed his sword right out of its sheath and tossed that aside too.

They hit the wall and rattled onto the floor and in a mere second Avaryn was left weaponless and with a broken shoulder.

“Let’s take this outside.” Avaryn suddenly said, trying to improve his situation.

And Roviaryn smirked. “Why would I do that when I clearly have the advantage in here? You think I didn’t notice that you’re holding back? That you don’t want to hurt me in front of my wife.”

Avaryn glared, feeling his stomach boil. “You truly know how to take advantage of your situation.”

“And that is how you win a war.” Roviaryn dashed to Avaryn and before Avaryn could even attempt to escape, he was grabbed my the neck and pushed up against the wall.

Roviaryn’s large hands gripped firmly around the neck of the warrior, but not firmly enough to kill him just yet.
“That lover of yours,” Roviaryn started, “she’s going to be devastated, isn’t she?”

Avaryn hesitated as his hand grabbed onto Roviaryn’s arm and his fingers dug into his skin.

“When she see’s that rose you gave her whither away, she’ll finally understand the pointless nature of love. It’s useless. It dies when you die. It does nothing but burden you and bring you useless pain and suffering. She will see that once you’re gone.”

Avaryn glared, “she’s not like you.”

“Hmm,” Roviaryn smirked, “maybe she’ll try and avenge you. But that’ll bring about her own death as well. She stands not a single chance against me.”

Avaryn’s glare grew harsher. “You’re a sick man, Roviaryn.”

“If you had listened to what I said to you the day my son killed Dukaryn, we wouldn’t be here. You could have killed me but it’s your foolish heart that let me get this far. It has done you no good at all, it has made you suffer over and over and over again and now it is going to kill you. And you still think that I am the sick one?”

“You cannot convince me that my love is what led to this. If anything, it was your pride and your ego and your hate and your evil.”

The smirk on Roviaryn’s face disappeared. “Go join your father. Tell him I say hello and tell him that I do feel that it was unfortunate to kill him. He was a good king.”

And just as his grip on Avaryn’s neck tightened, the sound of a blade piercing through skin filled the room.

Avaryn was released just before his neck was crushed.

Roviaryn’s eyes widened as blood leaked out from his lips.

     And Lady Maryryna sobbed.
