Missing
Lucien and Anselme didn't look all that different. They both had the same brown hair, so light it was almost gold, the same eyes, the same twinkle of mischief, and the same insufferable attitudes.
I turned to look at Lucien again. He had grown quite a bit since the last time I had seen him, but that was to be expected. He stood quite a bit over me, but that wasn't saying much as I wasn't that tall anyways. Still though, he was shorter than Anselme, but not by much.
Lucien shifted, and I realized I was staring.
Glaring, I asked the question I knew more than one if us wanted to ask.
"What, exactly, are you doing here?"
"We ran into a bit of a problem down the road," Lucien started. "One of the girls from the bakery reported you missing from your work,"This earned me puzzled stares from both Anselme and Cherina.
"I didn't know you worked at the bakery, Arielle. Why didn't you tell me?" Cherina asked, seeming slightly hurt
"I might have mentioned it a couple times, and you might have picked up on it had you cared to listen to me." I snapped."Anyways, I left early in the morning and came back before noon. You were usually asleep."
Turning to look back at Lucien, I asked, confused, " I still don't see what this has to do with anything."
" The king's men are on the lookout for a healer. She must have seen the mark on your arm and described it to the soldiers who came to the bakery. As I imagine, its quite hard to keep it covered when you're up to your elbows in flour. Its quite strange though that she reported you missing after being gone for just a single morning."
I covered my face with my hands, frustrated. "Your story is a bit mixed up. We had an order for the king's Winter banquet, nearly two hundred cakes to make and fill. The soldiers must have been coming to collect them, and when they found that they weren't ready, she must have used my absence as an excuse."
With a chuckle, he said " That makes a bit more sense."
"So," I started, attempting to summarize the situation more for my self than anybody else, " the kings men are after a healer, under the pretense that they're looking for a missing girl?"
"In short, yes, I suppose so." Cherina finished.
"And when do we leave?" interjected Anselme, who was silent this whole time, his face now grave.
"That's why we came." Lucien said " We leave now."
