Chapter 3

I'm heading back into The Plaza and it's 10:15 so The Plaza is pretty crowded. I am walking towards the clock tower and I hear someone say my name very joyfully. It was Dorothy Williams and apparently according to her, she used to be friends with my mom so I try to act kind around her. It's kind of hard for me to act kind, it was just never my cup of tea, but my mother always said that I had the most convincing smile. She said that if I smiled for anyone, they would absolutely adore me. "Hello Carolyn. How are you today?" She said.

"Hello and I am fine besides the fact that I have my Solitudo today," I said trying not to sound to frightened. Solitudo is the proper name for the special event I have today.

"Oh yes I almost forgot you turn fourteen today. Happy birthday!" She said in a joyful way again.

"Thank you," I said. I honestly have not been paying attention to myself. All I've been worrying about is Rose. Perry must be too because he didn't wish me happy birthday, not that it matters though.

"Hey, since you don't have an adult women in the house, may I come and do your hair, makeup, and pick out your dress for your Solitudo?" She asks. I tell her yes because I do need help with picking out a dress and doing my hair. I have never put on makeup so that would be helpful as well.

I make it back to the house with Rose and it's now 10:45. Dorothy said she was coming over at 11 so I still have fifteen minutes to spare. I decide to make Rose and myself some lunch. All we ever have is soup so I make myself broccoli and cheddar soup and I make Rose the only soup she will eat, chicken noodle. I pour us each a glass of water and then go out to the backyard garden to pick some carrots for the side. I try to grow some vegetables so that Rose isn't eating chicken noodle soup everyday for the rest of her life.

We eat our meal, I do the dishes, and just as I walk out of the kitchen I hear a knock on the door, Dorothy is here. I open the door and she says, "hello again! We have such little time so please show me to your lavatory right now." I show her to the lavatory, she shuts the door, and opens up all of her bags.

"Well. Why don't we start with the hair," she says as she takes out a hair brush, some hair elastics and hair pins. "Has anyone told you how beautiful your hair and face is?" She says. "Your beautiful blonde hair is glowing and it is perfectly straight," she says. She likes to make comments as she works. "Your eyes are brown but they aren't like trash brown, they are like beautiful brown mountains in the snowy atmosphere."

"Thank you," I said.

"Of course," she said. "Now lets get to work."
