Chapter 4 - Alex

"He is rather attractive - and he does have some features that are similar enough to mine... but where did he even come from?"

"We're not sure, but he seems to be just the right age to be your son. It is rather unfortunate by the way, the whole situation with your Harriet. I don't think that we screened them carefully enough back then before putting them out on the floor."

"Well, I don't even allow her to leave the house anymore, but it's still a nuisance to just have her hovering around the house. They're just not good for much."

"What a shame. Oh! It seems that our mysterious prince is waking up! Welcome back to land of the conscious young man! How are you feeling? You've been doing a lot of sleeping in the past few days."

I groaned and brought my hand up to my pounding head, squinting into the fluorescent lights hovering above me as I lay on a hard hospital bed. An IV connected my arm to a bag of clear fluid that was dripping into my arm.

"Would you like some water?" A middle aged man with brown hair in a white coat slid up to the side of my bed on a wheeled stool, holding a cup of water with a straw in his hand. I leaned forward and gladly grabbed it, wrapping my lips around the straw and sipping as fast as I physically could. "So, let's get down to business. We can't find any kind of records of you - we don't even know your name - but we have found a man that will take you in as his son since he hasn't been able to produce a child of his own. His girl wasn't screened well enough before the day of His Choice."

His Choice? I thought, my brows furrowed. All of these people are very confusing.

"It's okay young man," The doctor said, seeing my expression. "What is your name, by the way?"

"A-Alex,", I stuttered, setting my cup down on the small table that sat next to my bed. I was becoming more and more confused by the second. "And yours?"

"Ha!" The doctor laughed, ignoring my question. "Your new father will explain everything in time." He gestured towards the corner of the hospital room that we're in, where a man was sitting in a hard, metal chair. He stood up, and approached the side of my bed.

"Alexander," He nods, standing next to my bed in a expensive-looking suit.

"Um, it's just Alex," I reply nervously.

"You will address me as 'Sir' Alexander, and you will show me and my colleagues the utmost respect once we leave here. Is that understood?" He leaned down, and I got a good look at his face. He has thick black hair like mine, along with pearly white teeth, a square jaw, and piercing blue eyes that dared me to disobey his orders.

'Yes sir," I say, leaning back into my bed to get as far away from him as possible.

"Good." he straightened back up, and turned to speak to the doctor, who was typing away on a small laptop while we were talking. "I want to have him cleaned up and in my car in ten," he ordered, then he turned and strode out of the open door into a plain, white hallway.

"Okay then," the doctor said with slight annoyance in his voice. "Do you think that you can stand up Alex?" I nod, slowly sitting up and swinging my legs off the side of the bed. As I stood up, my legs shook, but still held strong. "Good!" he exclaimed. He stood up, and walked over to a counter on the far wall of the room, opening a drawer and pulling out a stack of plain colored clothes along with a hairbrush, and a toothbrush and toothpaste. "You heard the man," he said as he handed me the stack, winking at me before walking towards the door.

He then stopped in the doorway, and turned around. "To get to the lobby, take the elevator down to first, then take the first right, then a left. Good luck, young man," he smiled, turning back around and closing the door behind him, leaving me alone.
