Chapter Thirteen

Rebecca was still feeling faint the next day when Hazel Armstrong showed up. She had brought little Adam along, who was crying up a storm, crying for his mother's caress and being ignored.

'How may I help you, Hazel?'

Hazel answered with agitation, sadness yet anger. 'Has my husband been in here recently? Possibly buying a present, a gift?' There was a hollowness in her eyes.

Rebecca wondered if Hazel had found out about her husband.

'I haven't seen your husband in ages and it's been longer since he stepped foot in my shop.'

'You wouldn't be lying now, would you?' Suspicion overwhelmed Hazel's tone.

'Of course not. Why would I lie?'

Hazel quickly joined her baby in a chorus of sobs.

'What's wrong, Hazel?'

'I think my husband is having an affair.'

'Are you sure?'

'Positive. Rebecca, I'm at my wits' end. I don't know what to do.'

Rebecca was surprised Hazel was telling her this, telling her something that wasn't about how perfect her life was. She didn't know what to do either. 'Maybe you should confront him about it.'

'He'd get angry with me if I did that.'

'He may not.'

'No, he will.' Hazel gave Rebecca a serious expression.

'But it's the only way you're going to deal with this.' Rebecca only wished she could follow her own advice.

'Yes, you're right. I want this sorted out.'

More cries bounded off the walls of the shop.

Rebecca went over and gave Hazel a hug, Hazel quickly burying a cheek into her shoulder. Rebecca felt a little awkward at first but the closeness was something she hadn't experienced in a long time. Not since her parents had died. It was more than welcome and pleasant.

Hazel broke off first. 'Thank you for talking with me. And not just today. I've always considered you a friend even though you probably haven't.'

Rebecca opened her mouth to speak, to deny perhaps.

'I know I can be a bit much, but I just can't help it sometimes.'
