XI
Elsie had gone with S0L and his force to Europa, a place she had come back to many times, each time is as bitter as the former. It was the same vessel that Helios is located in, the ship now called Calamity. Alongside them was Larson, Siphix of course and Aurix in a separate Skiff flying alongside them, due to his organic and natural nature, he is safer to fly away from Calamity. As they touched the ground, everyone dismounted, apart from Siphix whose duty is to remain on the ship no matter what. S0L had his revolver and she was given her rifle back. It felt odd walking beside the captain, his tall form made him imposing and demanded respect and their first encounter was not the most, friendly. Forward of them were the robots who were moving around like soldiers as they entered the laboratory.
Elsie: I never asked, how do you know of this object and nobody else?
S0L: This world holds many secrets, yet to be discovered. Each breach, branching out, insight I gain I discover more and more. But this, this is by far more important than anything.
Elsie: How come the Vanguard didn't find anything? I mean, they searched every nook and cranny that they could and saw nothing.
S0L: Some things are hidden in plain view, some hidden and some, masked.
They would encounter some Fallen but they were quickly dealt with. The robots were quite well equipped and very capable, much better than any Redjack ever could be.
S0L: Turn here.
Elsie looked around, they were facing a wall, even Larson looked confused but didn't want to say anything.
Elsie: It is a wall, what do you mean turn here?
He walked up to the wall and traced his hand along the surface, looking around, as if trying to visualize something, find something.
S0L: Hmm, that shouldn't be there.
He pressed a very small screw that to an untrained eye would look like a normal thing. Upon pressing it, a small panel opened, revealing a face scanner.
Elsie: What the? How come I have never seen this, heard of this?
S0L: If you would.
He gestured to the screen and she walked closer. Lasers scanned her face, only to reveal another screen with voice recognition.
Elsie: Ahm.... Elsie Bray.
A green check mark lit up the screen and there was a beep. With a hiss, a door opened up in the wall itself. It was so perfectly constructed that it looked like the whole wall was one large piece. But it was actually hiding a door in it.
S0L: It seems they haven't come across it, which is reassuring. But....Let's go and investigate.
First the soldiers went it, then S0L with Elsie right behind him and Larson behind her. Aurix stayed behind, he could not fit through this small passageway. As they navigated through the tunnel they come across a elevator. There wasn't enough room for the entire force to stand there.
S0L: Me, Larson and Elsie will be going and three infantry men and two pyrotechnicians.
They got onto the elevator and began to descend. Elsie was speechless, that this was hidden so well for so long. And she, a member of the Bray's did not know about it. But she was included in the access sequence.
Larson: Sir, if we find that the core of the room is compromised and the viruses had leaked out, what will we do?
S0L: That is what the Pyrotechnicians are here for. This virus, whilst extremely dangerous to any biological and material thing, is weak to fire.
Larson: I see. What is the origin of this virus?
S0L: From what the scientists and researchers could gather. It's makers are the same ones that created Helios.
Elsie: Makers?
S0L: Correct. This virus, it is not a natural one, it was created by a ancient society that I am oh so interested in.
Elsie: Are there more of these 'artifacts' out there?
S0L: That we have discovered? Yes. That we had not? I am sure.
Elsie: There are more?! That you know of?
S0L: Correct. But these artifacts are much less....dangerous and important as of now. But they are being used.
Larson: How deep have we gone down now?!
S0L: Very. But....
The elevator comes to a stop.
S0L: Here we are.
They step off and walk towards a vault door. Another console but this one S0L is able to hack into and open it. As hinges unlock and the valve turns, it slowly opens, revealing a overgrown room. They saw mangled mangled monstrosities, twisted and hideous, moving around until they noticed their presence. They let out a screech. S0L pulled out his gun and aimed.
S0L: This is demoralizing. Fire away!
They began to fire at the monsters charging at them, they were easy to kill, but they were regenerating.
S0L: Screw it. Pyrotechnicians, do your work!
They stepped forward, they were larger than a Guardian, more bulkier and fired out flames. The air was filled with sizzling and screeching. The entire room was engulfed in flames, the organic matter burning away, making it safe to pass through.
S0L: It seems they are able to regenerate, that I had not foreseen.
One of the creatures charges at S0L but he fires his revolver, hitting it in the head, killing it.
Elsie: How did it just die?
Larson: Maybe they are only able to regenerate if in proximity to the matter that made them?
S0L: That is what I assume too. With it gone, they become vulnerable.
They kept pushing through the facility, until finally reaching the main room. They stopped, in shock. The room's doors were breached, inside, they could see a wormlike being moving around, filling the entire interior of said room. It's head came into view, a massive faceless thing. It split open, revealing the object embedded inside before closing back again.
Larson: Well, that is.....I suggest running. I highly doubt these two guys can do anyt....
As he said that, two spiked tendrils pierced the two Pyrotechnician units, making them explode. But the worms skin was so hard, it was not affected.
S0L: Good idea.
They began to run back, the three infantry soldiers fired away, but they were killed quickly. They could hear the worm trying to break free. They were running fast for the elevator. Larson mashed the button and the elevator began to move up. The area shook, the beast was free.
Elsie: This is not good.
Larson: Massively not good. What are we gonna do?
S0L: What a man would have said in past. Nuke it.
Elsie: This entire facility?
S0L: Yes. We can't let it grow stronger. If the nukes don't stop it, then, then more and more. We have to stop this thing, at any cost.
They could hear the beast at the bottom of the shaft but they managed to reach the top. Everyone began to fall back. The ground shook form the pure strength of this monster. Elsie actually felt fear, such strength. This is no Worm God. This is something else, an entity in of itself. More dangerous, more powerful. They reached the surface and everyone got into their designated ship. The Skiff quickly left the AO whilst Calamity stayed. They were already on the bridge when the worm broke through to the surface.
Elsie: Can we not use Helios?
S0L: And do what. It has no bones, it is just flesh and muscle. It's biology does not matter, does not care about the effects of Helios. Fire away.
Three missiles were fired. The sky turned white, the ship shook from the pure shockwave, the shield was being drained. But as it all ended, the worm was damaged, forcing it to retreat back under the surface, buying the universe some time.
Elsie: Did we kill it?
S0L: No. But we bought ourselves some time. I think a meeting with the Vanguard is due.
Larson: Are you sure?
S0L: This is no longer my battle. Before me there was The Witness. Well, welcome another extremely dangerous enemy.
The ship flew away, heading back to Earth. Elsie was glad and scared at the same time. The Vanguard and S0L are at each others throats. But, she is glad that she might meet her sister again, and reassure her that she is fine. But this battle had just turned dark and there is more at stake. She looks at S0L, his actions are not of an AI. They feel more real, more organic, more natural. They way he jokes, speaks, acts and reacts, it is not normal for an AI. She had spent some time in his captivity and he treated her right. His dual natura, a tyrant that will achieve a goal no matter the price and his genuine care for those under his wings, it is concerning. But for now, maybe that is what is needed. He is like many leaders before, only putting his own people first, the others are an afterthought. Maybe Ana was right. Elsie can only smile, she was too cruel to her sister for believing in S0L, but maybe she was right.
