VII
Four hours going down the highway, and the Cadillac finally took its last tragic breath, breaking down on the side of the highway. They were still an hour away from Montpellier, where Hayley's family lived, but they couldn't go any farther in that vehicle without it exploding on them.
Tyler and Ryan pushed the car, with their unconscious Templar member still in it, into the ditch. Josh and Hayley stood near the road, coaxing any passerby to stop for them.
"Do you think that we're going to find them alive?" She asked, dropping her outstretched hand as their fourth trucker passed them without a second glance. "My family, I mean."
"There's no reason for us to believe they aren't. But hope isn't the best thing to have right now," he responded.
"Why not?"
He shrugged. "Because what good does it do besides making us fall harder when reality hits?"
She whistled to herself. "That was deep," Hayley said.
"I get it from Tyler."
She looked down the left side of the nearly desolate highway, then to the right. "We're gonna be stuck here forever."
"Nah, I'm sure we'll be fine," he chuckled. "I've gotta have hope for that."
Another car roared down the road, a black van with tinted windows. Josh stared into it with his thumb out, catching sight of two men in the front seat. The van began to slow down as they approached. He became apprehensive and put his arm in front of Hayley as they stopped.
"They're giving me and vibes," he said.
"Me too," she responded. "It looks like- what the fuck is that?"
There were spiked on the rims of the van's wheels. It came to a full stop right in front of the two, and all the blood in Josh's body froze.
"Get away from the road!" Ryan shouted.
The moment the doors opened, Josh turned and tackled Hayley to the ground, just as the firing started. Bullets whizzed past their heads. He thought he heard Tyler shout something, but he couldn't understand it over the sound of gunshots.
Grunting in frustration, Hayley pulled her gun out and, through Josh's arms covering her torso, fired at the van. Josh strained his head back to see Ryan also shooting at their attackers, though he couldn't find Tyler.
"How many are there?" He shouted over the noise.
Hayley's gun clicked. "Shit! There's four, I think. I got one of them."
Josh rolled off of her and reached for his gun. As he did that, a bullet ricocheted and hit him in the leg, causing him to bite back a surprised yell.
The Templar goons were dressed in all black, slacks, shirts, even their ties. One of them, the one he'd seen driving, wore shades and had a white leather jacket on. He'd seen one person where that jacket before, on the day he was kidnapped from Debby's house.
"Fuck!" Josh pressed a hand to his wound and grabbed his gun, landing two shots in one of the goons.
"Where's Tyler?" Ryan yelled.
"How the hell am I supposed to know?" Josh ducked in to the ditch, sliding down in the crumbling dirt. "I thought he was with you."
Hayley ran up to the car, scrambling for more ammunition. "Just focus on not dying right now!"
He poked his head out of the ditch, catching a glimpse of Tyler tackling two of the Templar members before immediately having to drop when a bullet came too close to him. Josh had two, maybe three bullets left. They didn't have much to begin with, and without weapons to protect themselves, they were thoroughly fucked.
"Wait a minute," he said out loud. "We are weapons. Ryan, cover me!"
"What?"
Josh jumped to his feet and ran straight for the white jacket man. The goon didn't react in time and they both tumbled to the ground, elbows and knees striking wherever he could reach.
When Josh managed to gain the upper hand and planted himself on top of the man, the goon already had a gun jammed under his chin. They froze, trapped in a stalemate. Josh's hands were firm around the Templar member's throat. He could easily snap his neck, but not before the man pulled the trigger.
"Didn't think this one through, did you?" The man grinned.
"I'm not one to think things through," Josh responded, seeing a flash of metal in the corner of his eye. "But things tend to work out for us."
"Why do you insist to resist? Postponing your own inevitable demise will do nothing but extend your suffering."
"I don't remember asking."
"Gerard will come for you, you know. He is your inevitability. You can't escape us forever. We are everywhere."
"Then we'll kill you all."
The man laughed. "You really believe four of you can defeat us? The Templar is all powerful. We're heaven sent. We're divine."
"I could just snap your neck right now-"
"But you won't."
"Why not?" Josh sneered. "I don't care if you shoot me. I'm basically invincible."
"You? Ha!" The man narrowed his eyes snidely.
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"We all know about your condition, Mr. Dun. We know it's only a matter of time until you shrivel and die while your lover lives on with the memory of how he couldn't save y-"
The roar of an engine cut the goon off, his gaze breaking to look over the Tyler in the driver's seat of the van. Josh grabbed the man's wrists with one hand, snapping them both and making him drop the gun. With one hand still on his neck, Josh squeezed and flicked his wrist, snapping his neck easily.
He sighed and fell back on his legs, rolling off the now dead body. "How many left?"
"Just the one," Hayley shouted back in response. "Trapped in the car. Never mind, I think he's dead."
Tyler rolled the windows down, gesturing for them to get into the vehicle. "Let's go mother fuckers, before we get killed this time."
Ryan hopped into the back with Hayley after raiding the bodies of their weapons and ammunition. Josh got into the passenger side, pissed as all hell.
"This is the worst fuckin' road trip ever."
The others groaned in agreement.
