IV
The three froze as the grenade clinked against the wall, rolling to a stop at the feet of Josh's two sisters. Ashley screamed, and that was enough to spur him into action. He leapt for the grenade, scooping it up and throwing it as hard as he could back through the front door.
The kick of the explosion knocked Josh out of the kitchen and into the living room. He slammed his back against the open back door, groaning at the sudden stop that made his head pound.
A blurry figure made its way into the house. Josh, still stunned from the blow, struggled to stand as he watched the man walk to his siblings. He couldn't even scream in time when he saw the man pull out a gun and point it at his little sisters.
Before he could pull the trigger, however, Hayley appeared beside Josh and shot the man in the head, who fell like a cut down tree.
"We need to get out of here," she said, pulling Josh the rest of his way to his feet. "Ryan and Tyler are in the car."
"But my sisters-"
"Will be safer without you."
Josh hated that she was right. He stopped before leaving to hug them.
"What's going to happen to you?" Abigail asked.
"I don't know, Abs." He ruffled her hair. "But I'll be back soon. Promise."
Ashley looked at him with glassy, shocked eyes. "I- I can't believe you were being honest. This is- oh my god, dad. Jordan."
"Sign worry about that, just do what I told you. Get out and don't return. Call the cops if you have to, but don't step foot in this house until I come back, okay?"
"Okay." She nodded, slipping down her cheeks.
Josh brushed Ashley's hair behind her ear, kissing her forehead. Even though he hadn't seen them for ten years, they were still his family. That would never change.
"You're so brave." He stood and hugged them one more time before leaving through what was left of the front door, seeing curls of smoke rising from the charred grass.
For pure nostalgic reasons, Josh stopped on the sidewalk and looked back into the yard of his old home, looking up at the broken windows, destroyed shingles, and orange fire licking the wooden floors for the last time. His sister were making their way out from the back, Josh caught sight of Ashley helping Abigail over a fence.
He felt guilty, if not a bit relieved. The place that represented his worst memories up in flames. It would be a fitting end, if it didn't cost the lives of his brother and father.
"Come on, Josh!" Hayley hollered from the driver's seat of the van. "More of them are coming!"
Josh went to the mailbox and pried off the metal numbers indicating their address. Once he pocketed the metal plate and saw a black car approaching fast, he ran to the van, hopping into the back with Tyler.
His boyfriend was only half conscious and mumbling nonsense, but fine other than that. Josh ran a hand through his hair, sighing discontentedly.
"How'd they catch up to us so fast?" He asked, pulling himself into a seat.
"I'm not sure," Hayley responded, glancing at him through the rear view. "My best guess? Trackers. Tyler figured it out first, as usual."
He looked down at Tyler and noticed one of his hands curled tightly into a fist. Tyler's eyes shot open and he sat up with a cry, breathing heavily.
"Hey, Ty, it's me. It's Josh. You're safe, okay? Take a breath, honey." Josh grabbed his shoulders, holding him still.
Tyler stared at him, recognition taking a second to take hold, and he sighed. "Oh, thank god, I thought- I had the worst nightmare."
"What was it?" Ryan piped up.
"It was... cold. And dark. You guys were screaming, and I could've sworn we were back in Romania, in that place."
He relaxed his fists and what looked like a computer chip dropped to the floor. Josh picked it up, nearly dropping it as it was soaked in blood.
"There was something about it," Tyler continued, sitting up with his back against Josh's legs. "I think it was snowing."
"Is this how they found us?" Josh used his shirt to sip away as much blood as he could.
"Yeah. They must've put it in me before the whole... Vanya thing. It also doubles as a monitoring tool and behavioral conditioner that connects right to the nervous system."
"What, like an internal shock collar?" Ryan gawked.
Tyler chuckled a bit. "Something like that."
"Damn. I guess those conspiracy theories are true."
"We need to destroy it, then, and check if we have some of those too," Josh said adamantly.
He placed the chip on the ground and picked up his gun, raising his hand above his head. Though he intended on smashing the chip with the butt of his gun, Tyler caught his wrist.
"Hold your horses, sweetheart," he said. "We can probably reprogram it to our own advantage."
Hayley waved a hand. "Oh, like reverse tracking!"
"Exactly."
Ryan turned in his seat and held a hand out for the chip, which Josh handed him. "This little piece of shit nearly fucked our whole plan," he grumbled.
"Yeah, well, it could've been worse." Josh dropped his head into his hands, the reality of what just happened hitting him like a punch in the gut.
He hated his dad, but this? Nobody deserved to die like that, not even an asshole like him.
"Alright, where to next, Mr. Leader Man?" Hayley asked.
Josh grabbed Tyler's hand, feeling him squeeze his hand comfortingly. "New York. Ryan's got some mommy issues to deal with."
