Chapter 4
Serenity
"He did what?" Susan shrieked over her glass. Matt just sat next to her with a shit-eating grin.
I rolled my eyes, "See, I knew I should just have kept my mouth shut. Oh fuck, do you think he's going to fire me now?" I started to panic. What would my bosses think, what would the other vampires and exchange members think. Oh gods...
"Earth to Serenity," Matt barked, waving his hand in front of my face. "Come back, kid. Mr. Ito isn't going to do anything to you. Except maybe stalk you," he muttered the last part as he nodded his head toward the door.
I followed his gaze and saw Mr. Ito looking at us briefly before climbing the stairs to a VIP section along with Mr. Willet. He hadn't even acknowledged me. "I'm so screwed," I hissed softly.
Susan kept looking between the darkened windows of the VIP lounge and me, then asked as she popped a cherry in her mouth, "Would it really be so bad to kiss him? I mean you did dance with him a few weeks ago."
"I didn't even know it was him!" I huffed. "Not to mention, what would people think? He's my boss...and a vampire, like a really important one. I'm just a human intern who doesn't know a damn thing about your world."
That made both of them laugh and Matt snorted, "You aren't just anything. For such a tiny human, you're a force to be reckoned with, Ren. You had me on a damn leash the first day."
"She sure did," Susan added. "I thought I was watching a dragonslayer the way you cracked this guy. Hell, you've even managed to get him to try human food!"
My cheeks heated at their compliments, but I still protested, "Fine, but that still doesn't make it okay for me to kiss my boss."
"I could always fire you," a deep voice came from behind me, making me freeze.
"Um, hey let's go dance," Susan sputtered as she dragged Matt away. Traitors! I mouthed as they gave me a sympathetic wave.
"May I sit?" Mr. Ito asked as I turned to look up at him.
"Um, yeah, sure." We sat awkwardly for a few moments, but I couldn't take my eyes off of him. He was just as breathtaking as the first day I'd laid eyes on him. His blue eyes pinned me as he ran a hand through his hair, leaving it to fall over his eyes.
"Seren, um, Miss Matthews, I owe you an apology. I put you in an uncomfortable position, and for that I'm deeply sorry," he spoke softly. I shifted in my seat, unsure how to respond. I mean, he wasn't wrong, but if I were honest with myself, I wanted to kiss him. Damn, I really wanted to kiss him, I was just scared at what that might mean. It's not like I'm an overly experienced gal in the human world, and this job is the first positive interaction I've ever had with vampires. "As for my earlier comment, I would never fire you."
My shoulders dropped a bit and I muttered under my breath, "Well that's a relief." He laughed and my cheeks flared when I realized he'd heard me. "Shit, sorry."
He laughed harder and tapped his ears, "Vampire hearing, and you have nothing to apologize for. As I said before, the fault is mine. However, may I suggest something?" I tilted my head in question. He gave me a panty-dropping smile and continued as he extended his hand to me. "Hello, my name is Daniel. I was wondering if you would dance with me and let me buy you a drink?"
His charm was undeniable and I giggled like a damn school girl as I nodded, taking his hand. "I would love to dance with you, Daniel. I'm Serenity, but my friends call me Ren."
The smile that lit up his face made my stomach do flips as he led me to the dancefloor. As if the universe knew, the song suddenly switched to a slow dance. He smirked, then pulled me against his chest. My arms draped over his shoulders as my head rested against his shoulder. "So Ren, tell me about yourself...what kind of movies do you like?"
I looked up at his eyes and grinned, "Well, Daniel, I'm a fan of horror films, but only the really good ones that get in your head. Of course, comedies are good too, and don't get me started on superhero movies." He chuckled softly. "Okay, this might be a deal breaker, but who's your favorite superhero," I asked him.
He frowned, thinking, "Am I in trouble if I say I don't know. I'm kinda old and haven't kept up lately," he admitted. Feigning a gasp of indignation, I pretended to swoon, making him laugh outloud. I broke out in giggles as he pulled me closer again then whispered in my ear, "Perhaps you can tutor me. Show me your favorite things, Ren." I shivered feeling his comment was something far deeper than a reference to movies. Simply nodding, I clung to him as the song continued.
We had continued to dance for a few more songs, and now I found myself in a corner booth with my two best friends, Daniel and Mr. Willet who had come down in search of his missing friend. He eyed me suspiciously as we all chatted. When the server brought another round of drinks he asked, "So what powers do you have, Miss Matthews? I swear I haven't seen Daniel smile this much in over a hundred years."
I blinked for a few moments letting his comment sink in. "Just how old are all of you?" I blurted, then slapped my hand over my mouth, "Shit, sorry you guys."
Matt threw his head back and roared with laughter, "Fuck, Serenity, you really don't have a filter when you drink, do you?" I tried to hide behind my hands as he continued to laugh.
"Four hundred thiry six," Daniel spoke, silencing the table. Even Matt and Susan gaped at his response.
"Three hundred eight two," Mr. Willet answered. "Of course, I've been putting up with his ass for about three hundred of those years." His comment made Daniel groan as he punched his arm playfully.
"More like I'm babysitting you, Yūjin," Daniel chuckled. "Now that we've established that the two of us are ancient, just how old are you, little girl?"
I felt a shiver run down my spine at the phrasing he used and gulped, "Um, twenty six."
"Holy shit, you're barely out of diapers," Susan snorted.
"Hey!" I growled, throwing a napkin at her. "I can't help it I'm human, and I've been a fully function adult for years."
Daniel leaned over and whispered, "Oh little girl, I have no doubt you're all grown up." I shivered again, feeling myself lean into him more.
"Get a room," Matt snorted, making me cringe, but Daniel just pulled me against his chest. I let out a slight yelp as he effortlessly pulled me into his lap and growled softly, his body tense. "Sorry, no offense, sir." Matt quickly said. I felt Daniel's body relax as he kissed the top of my head, making me sigh.
