Chapter 7

Isabel woke up early that morning. Not because She had had enough sleep, it was because she hadn't. Not one inch of sleep. All she could think about is the Spanish class. How come she had to think about it? Were her siblings the same? And what was it gonna be like for Rowan?

Isabel sneaked down stairs and considered going to her mom's diner but instead got the keys. Not for the car but for the room two doors down from hers.

Callum had locked it the first night they had been let back in to the house. A week after their parents had died. The house wasn't ready back then but they had no where else to go.

Isabel remembered that night. Callum was screaming at Clare for going inside. Jake was shouting at Callum for shouting at Clare. And Isabel was in the corner with Rowan, trying to stop herself from crying.

The house didn't feel like home then and to Isabel it still didn't. Not until the room was fixed. But Callum said they didn't have the money.

She had to sneak past Jakes room with the creaky floorboard but Jake slept like a bear in winter. She unlocked the door quietly and the second she saw the room, she held her breathe.

It was all black, all of it. There was no furniture or curtains, so the light came through the smashed window. Isabel felt like crying but she didn't.

She stood in the middle of it and took a deep breathe in, trying to remember what it was like before the fire got it. It was the biggest room in the house.

Isabel used to complain about not having it but now all she wanted more was her small room and them in this big one.

You could still smell the smoke. You could still see where the fire began. And if Isabel really concentrated, she could still hear them screaming.

"Hey Mrs. Evans" Cegs called out as the hot new teacher walked down the corridor. Cegs kept his eyes on her long legs as she ignored him.

"Its never gonna happen"

"You just watch, my friend, you just watch" He told Isabel.

"Your such a man whore..."

Cegs shoved Isabel into a locker nearby laughing. Isabel's green eyes went wide and shoved him back harder. He smashed into another locker.

"West Quinns..." A guy whispered harshly as he walked by. Cegs followed his eyes and was about to do something when Isabel pushed him again to distract him

"How'd you like it now?" Isabel laughed as Cegs eyes eased up and he focused on Isabel. His football instinct kicked in and he had to remind himself that he didn't want to kill Isabel.

He was just about to lung fro her when a cheerleader walked right into him. He apologised anyway "I'm sorr-...Cassie?"

Isabel glanced at Cassie and then quickly walked away. Cegs cursed in his head at her and then tried removing Cassie who had latched on to him.

"Jaaakkkeeee dummmppped meeeeeeeee" She cried, getting tears on his shirt. It was hit favourite band shirt.

"Oooohhhh, that's....terrible...Cassie" He looked around for anyone to help him but not a soul.

"What. Am. I. Going. To. Do?" She paused every second for dramatic affect. Her arms still clinging on to Cegs for dear life.

"Do...uh...do you need help?" Callum watched as Penney tried holding Rowan and Cleaning the floor from mashed carrot.

"Your home?" Penney frowned handing Rowan to him. Penney eyes went to his and for a split second they had moment.

But it was ruined by a bang from upstairs. Callum eyes fluttered up and frowned. Penney went to explain. "You've missed a lot. You're brother, broke up with some girl..."

"Jake broke up with Cassie? I have missed a lot" He puffed out some air and ran his hands through his hair. He settled Rowan down with with keys.

"Where have you been?"

Callum looked at Penney "Um...Canada, i work up there sometimes..." He opened the fridge and looked at it like it was empty.

"You've been gone a week..."

"I know that..."

Penney nodded and put the mop away, she sat down opposite Rowan high chair. She made funny faces to make the little boy laugh. "Can you say Penney? PEN-NEY."

"Calllll" He pointed at Callum and made Callum chuckle.

"You think he should be talking by now?" Callum sat down as Rowan repeated his name again and again.

"The books say he should but they also don't have a chapter about kids losing their parents so..." Penney shrugged her skinny shoulders and stared at Callum.

Callum knew she liked him. Penney knew she liked her. It was just a matter of time.

"And my mom works in recruitment so she travels a lot. On my last birthday she brought me to Paris, it was amazing. French food is awesome" Clare bragged.

A crowd was gathered around the new interesting girl. The girl whose been toe very continent. Whose ate in the best restaurants. Whose owned the most priceless objects. Clare couldn't stop herself.

The more she talked the more lies came pouring out. And for the first time she was the person everyone wanted to talk to. Everyone wanted to listen to the new and interesting Clare.

"Wow, you have led a really interesting life..." Hugo smirked while Clare and him walked away from the crowd to their next class.

"No...i've just been places, seen things..."

"I know, you told me." He sounded a bit pissed off at her "You know when we met Clare, i kind of thought you were....normal..."

"I am!"

"No you're not. You're like them, you're not me..."

"Like you?"

"I came here on a scholarship, that paid for everything. If i didn't get that, i wouldn't be here and i thought you were like me. I thought you weren't just here because your parents could pay for it!" And Hugo walked off.

Clare didn't know what she had done wrong. Had Hugo figured out that she was lying? Were they transparent?

"Ok, now harder this time! I wanna see improvement Mc Garrett!" Cegs had been dragged in by Coach after skipping yesterday. It was a nice break from Cassie whining all day. He had dumped her on Isabel.

Isabel was gonna kill her.

"CEGS, YOU READY?" Isabel yelled, looking very pissed off at him. He couldn't help but laugh. Will Mc Garrett eyes went wide when he saw Isabel.

Cegs clicked his fingers in front of his face "Concentrate Mc Garrett! Now throw again!" Mc Garrett threw again but Cegs wasn't impressed.

"CHACE!"

Cegs hated when anyone called him that. It reminded him of someone who left a long time ago. He never liked thinking about that person.

"ONE SECOND! He focused in on Mc Garrett again. "Now, this time i want all the power you got in that arm of yours. All the power. I don't want distance, power Mc Garrett!"

"Power" He whispered and he swung high. Cegs shook his head "POWER MC GARRETT, NOT DISTANCE!"

"CHACE EGAN!" Isabel yelled one last time. Mc Garrett smiled "Who's that?" Cegs looked from Mc Garrett to Isabel. "No one. She's no one"

"I'll DRIVE MYSELF!"

"ISABEL ELLIOT, I SWEAR TO GOD!" If looks could kill, Cegs and Isabel would both be dead. Mc Garrett chuckled "I wanna know Isabel Elliot..."

"No, no you do not..." He scowled in Isabels direction while she gave him the finger.

Big game.

"WELL FOLKS HERE IT IS, THE BIG GAME! THE ONE WE'VE ALL BEEN WIATING FOR! ITS FRIDAY NIGHT HERE AND ITS WEST QUINN AGAINST EATS QUINN AND BOY AM I EXCITED TED"

"ME TOO MICK, ME TOO! THERE'S A LOT OF PLAYERS PLAYING FOR DIFFERENT TEAMS TONIGHT! ONE OF THEM IS CEGS EGAN, NOW PLAYING FOR EAST QUINN!"

Cegs could hear the crowd already as he took a swing of his flask. He tasted the bitterness of the drink and always wondered why he was so hooked to the stuff.

"You know i bet you can play better without it!" A voice came from behind him. He smiled at the sound of her voice and twirled around.

"Look who it is...my very own cheerleader. What you doing here firecracker?"

"Do you wanna be shoved into a locker again Cegs?"

He chuckled as they both leaned up against the fence to the pitch. "So how does it feel being back? Cause its insanely weird for me!"

"We've only been gone a month....but yeah, its feels weird" Cegs handed her his flask "Lets see if your right" making her smile.

"You know the weirdest bit..." She peered around while walking away "It doesn't feel like home any more..." And she was right.

Cegs walked onto the pitch feeling nervous. He wasn't nervous because it was his first match against Jake. But because he had never played without drinking beforehand.

"Hey stranger!" Jake ran over in his blue jersey. Cegs missed the blue jersey. Jake thought it was strange seeing Cegs in red.

"Hey man, how you feelin' huh? Scared? I'd be scared!" Cegs patted him on the shoulder, and Jake realised how much he missed his best friend being around.

"Don't try and Phys me out, don't do that! Its a big game!"

"I know its a big game!"

"You're sober..." Jake noticed, almost feeling proud.

"Blame that on your sister, she's the one who keeps pouring out my liquor. She needs to be tamed, man."

"Hey Cegs, Coach wants you." A tall scary looking dude came behind Cegs. He stared into Jakes soul and made him shutter.

"I...better go then. Look man, good luck" He hugged Jake and gave him man pats. "Watch my back though..."

"Always man"

"WELL TED, I CAN HONESTLY TELL YOU THIS WAS THE RESULT I WAS EXPECTED. THIS WAS NOT THE RESULT ANYONE WAS EXPECTING. I'M IN SHOCK, I'M IN SHOCK TED!"

"EAST QUINN HAVE WON! EAST QUINN HAVE SHOWN EVERYONE TONIGHT THAT PLAYERS ARE PLAYER MICK! THERE'S NO DOUBT ABOUT THAT!"

The players roared into the party house. It was already in full swing. East Quinns and West Quinns had joined party's. Some were mourning, some were celebrating.

Jake watched at Cegs celebrated with his new team. He scoffed to himself and took a sip of his beer. "How'd they do it?"

"They had the players man..."

"WE have the players! We're West Quinn! We've got the best coach! We've got the best equipment the best pitch! I mean, come on man" He grounded his shoes into the ground.

"Hey Jake, why don't you come celebrate man!" Cegs shouted over.

"Nah man, I'm fine."

"Come one man, let party like we used to!" Cegs walked over, unsettling some of the West Quinn players. Jake stood up.

"I'm fine right here with MY team!" Jake slurred his words, and pushed Cegs off. If there's one thing you need to know about Cegs its that he does not like to be pushed.

Cegs shoved Jakes back it its started an all out riot between the two schools. Kicks and punches were thrown and in the end the West Quinns were out numbered.

"You were so brave..." Cassie held an ice pack on Cegs face. Cegs gave her half a smile and continued drinking his beer. She proceeded to sit on his lap.

Cegs was very unsure of this but was too drunk to think "Um...whatcha doing there?"

"Kissing you..." And she attached her lips to his. Cegs couldn't understand what was happening. He felt Cassie's hands run to his belt and forgot why it was wrong.

"Man, I'm telling you, I'm so over Cegs" One of Jake's team mates said as they sat in a bar in the middle of nowhere. Jake nodded in agreement.

"We don't need him. He's not even that good!" Jake muttered and watched as his team mate smoked a joint.

"You want one?"

"Um...no, no i don't...." Jake shook his head.

"There's always time to start man. It calms the nerves..." He chuckled,  offering him the drug. Jake considered it in his head. The pro's and con's. He always did this.

He did it when he was breaking up with Cassie. He loved Cassie, he really did but it didn't feel right any more. He was still dealing with his family and now with football. He couldn't deal with her too.

"You know what, what the hell man! Give it here!" And that was the start of a problem Jake could not fix.
