Chapter 5
"Hey its me Clare, you sister" Clare's voice came through the answering machine. "I know it was only yesterday but did i forget my blue pyjamas, i cant find them anywhere?"
"Anyway i guess you guys are out so just call me back..." And the message ended.
The house was not empty though. Callum stood in the kitchen making a sandwich for work. Rowan ate his bread and sung some song.
Isabel was flipping her wet air around as Clare had taken the hair dryer. And Jake was finishing homework last minute.
No one heard the phone ring.
"Um...hello?"
Callum whipped around to see Cegs standing in the doorway. He wore his normal worn-out-jeans and some dirty t-shirt. Cegs dad worked in the car shop down the street.
"Cegs, hey!" Callum turned back to his food.
"Hi" He walked down the two steps into the kitchen and smiled at Rowan. He was never really good with kids. He took a seat at the counter and took an apple. "I thought you'd be gone already..."
"Oo...no, I'm interviewing for a nanny today!" Callum explained, filling his sandwich up some more. The sandwich was going soggy with contents.
"Oh yeah, so Clare's officially left huh?"
"Looks like it. Wasn't the easiest ride, I'm sure your best friend told you about it all!" Callum glanced up at the tall guy in his kitchen. Cegs was the same size, maybe even taller then Callum.
"Great, your here!" Jake grinned, greeting Cegs and grabbing his bags. Cegs handed some bag to Jake. His football uniform Cegs would no longer be needing.
"You ready?" Jake asked. Cegs nodded.
"Wait, i thought you got moved!" Callum asked while giving Rowan a banana.
"Yeah, he did! He's not here for me, he's here fo-"
"Why are you here?" Isabel stormed past the tow boys and walked to the fridge, staring inside it before taking a yoghurt.
"He's taking out to school!" Jake ordered. Callum raised his eyebrows as it was never a good idea to order Isabel around.
"No he's not"
"Isabel, out need a ride to school!"
"I'm getting the bus!" She shovelled her yoghurt into her messy backpack and tried looking for a spoon somewhere.
"I'm gonna be late, ok? So just go with him! Please!" Jake called and the door slammed. Isabel speeded past Cegs to catch Jake.
Cegs followed reluctantly and wondered why he got involved in this family.
"JAKE!" Isabel yelled, though he was half way down the street.
"You ready?"
"I'm not going with you!"
"Get in the damn car Isabel! I'm not doing this for you, I'm doing it for Jake!" He explained "Its our first day at this place!"
Isabel peered at him for awhile before walking slowly to his truck and hoping in the passenger seat. Cegs smiled to himself how well that worked and they drove off.
"So why do you want to be a nanny?"
"I love children"
"Children"
"Honestly, the children"
"The little bright lights in the sea of darkness"
"Being able to care for someone else's child is the greatest gift in the world"
Callum had seen 8 nanny and none of them were good enough. They were qualified and sweet. They all had warm smiles and kind hearts but Callum couldn't seem to click with anyone them.
He was just about finished when the final nanny came in. She wore baggy black clothes with big purple boots. Her lip was pierced and half her head was shaved.
"Hi, you must be.." Callum stole a glance at his sheet "Penney"
"Yeah, that's me. Your Callum , right?" She sat in the seat opposite him. Her arms crossed and she legs spread wide. Though her stare was hard there was something nice about her.
"Yeah, that's me. So look Penny I've seen a lot of nanny's today, and i guess I'm just wondering, why should i pick you!"
"Cause i've got something none of those girls have!"
"And what's that?" Callum was curious, he found himself leaning in.
"Life experiences." She started "Look, I'm sure all those girls were really nice and gave you great impressions but i bet you don't remember one of their names..."
"There..was...Laur...Luarel..."
"You just made that up." She grinned "And you made it up because none of them caught your eye, but me. I've know the world. I've lived in it. And i know that I'm gonna be the one that can teach your kid that!"
"Sure I'm young. And under qualified but let me tell out when i walk out that door. You wont forget my name. P-E-N-N-E-Y. Out that in your pipe and smoke it!"
Callum was'nt sure if she was being serious. Penney knew she had blown it.
"Your...your not allowed smoke on the job..." Was all Callum could say.
In true Cegs style, they rocked up late. Cegs threw on his jacket and Isabel swung on her bag. They stared at their new surrounds, shoulder to shoulder.
"Well, this is...different"
It looked like everyone in the school was outside. Everyone seemed to be late. People hung around their cars, looking like they could stay there for hours.
Students rode bikes and boards around the paths, not thinking about classes. Teachers who arrived were either smoking or in their pyjamas.
Cegs took out his hip flask and was about to take a sip when Isabel grabbed it off him. He scowled at her "If you wanted some you could of just asked."
Isabel poured out the yellow liquid as Cegs eyes went wide and he his hands tried to save it. "Wat the hell are you doing?"
"No drink!" Isabel frowned at him and walked on inside. Cegs wanted to strangle her but knew he's be blamed. He took one last look at the liquid and ran to find Isabel.
Isabel was a smart girl. Every teacher she said had told her so. But Isabel was also very dis-obedient and so, every teacher told her that too.
Her new locker was number 88 and her neighbours were mostly kids who looked high. The kids were definitely different at East Quinn. A lot more laid back and...fun.
This really was the school for bad kids.
"Hey good-lookin', what's your name?"
Isabel's green eyes scanned the new boy who was brave enough to talk to her. He had shaved letters on his name and wore a vest with chains.
His friends flocked close behind him, pretending to be cool. Isabel was exhausted with guys like this. She found them so uninteresting.
"Isabel"
"Isabellll, niiice!" He prolonged his words which annoyed her. The guys was hot, there was no denying but an idiot to think he had a chance with her. "Hey, how 'bout you come with me, Isabelll?"
His friends laughed and the cocky boy leaned in closer to Isabel. His arms coming around to squeeze her ass. But what the cocky boy didn't know, was Isabel wasn't that type of girl.
She kicked him hard groin and twisted his arm "Unless you want me to rip your balls off, i suggest no!"
From a far Cegs was already flirting with two girls. They flock to him like sheep to a shepard. He was just about to agree a time and place and out the corner of his eye, he saw the composition.
"Fucking hell" He cursed and pushed through the crowd to find Isabel and her new friends. "What the hell's going on?" He frowned, confused by this girl.
"Hey hey hey, what's going on?"He shoved the cocky boy away and then shoved his friends away too. People had gathered around to watch the feisty new girl. "GET LOST, ALL OF YOU!" and they all scattered off.
Isabel was leaning against the lockers when Cegs turned back around. He looked at her, his hands questioning.
"He was being dick..." Is all she said before walking off. He shook his head a little before walking to class puzzled.
"Hey, its Clare again. Look i don't know where you've all disappeared to but I'm now a 100% sure i left my blue pyjamas. If you could just call me back when you're not too busy, though it seems you guys are always busy."
"Which by the way you better be busy and not ignoring me. Cause classes don't start fro another three days. I can also come back home you know! Its not a long ri-" And the machine cut her off.
Clare slammed the phone down in anger and cursed. She ran her fingers through her hair and let out a loud sigh. Her new room was already set up and everything in the right place.
She had folded all her clothes into the drawers. Hung up her coats and dresses in the ward rope. Got all her bathroom essentials laid out in the bathroom.
She's stuck her favourite scientist on the wall with her favourite quote. She;s made her bed three times and set her alarm for three days time. She was all set.
And bored.
Her new life had hit a very hard wall and the whole place was quite boring and quite. The lounge was a quite ready place where no one spoke. The canteen was where people ate in silence.
The gardens were where people sat in silence. The library was where people studied in silence and the halls were empty as everyone was everywhere else.
A tiny bit of Clare was starting to regret moving. She kept thinking back to when Callum asked her if she was sure. And when he had asked her that, she was 100% sure.
But that felt like forever now. And the move across country was starting to look like a really dumb move. And Clare never made dumb moves.
"Hi, I'm Tami!"
Isabel peered up from her sloppy first meal to see a pink haired fairy. It wasn't an actually fairy but the girl looked like one. She had pink tutu on and a tight white top.
Her hair were sparkly and her hair was pink. Pink with glitter in it. Isabel's lack of words seem to give Tami the go-ahead to sit down.
"Your new, right? You came from West Quinn?"
"Yeah..." Isabel decided to answer which Tami seemed delighted about. She began taking out her lunch, which was encased in pink wrapping paper. Isabel watched as she unwrapped her food.
"You want some?" Tami saw Isabel looking at her food. Isabel shook her head.
"What's up with the wrapping paper? Its not Christmas!"
"Well, my mom used to put my lunch in bags, like everyone else. And then one day i thought instead of bags, why not wrap your lunch up? And so from that day on, I've wrapped my lunch!"
"Cool" Isabel bit into her apple.
The canteen was a lot busier in East Quinn then to West Quinn. Most people left to get there. Here it was pack to the brim. Isabel tried spotting anyone she knew, but all her friends had stayed at West.
Juts then a huge yell came from food line. People stood up to see what was happening. Two guys had begun to fight and no one was pulling them off each other.
"Oh fuck" Isabel recognised one of the guys. She walked away from Tami, and pushed past the crowd surrounding fight.
The two guys were rolling around on the ground, both getting in punches. Isabel looked around but everyone was just chanting 'Fight Fight Fight'.
Isabel intervened and tried tugging at one of them but that plan back fired and a hand swung for her face, marking her cheek. She gasped with the pain and the crowd quietened down.
"Hell no!" Tami came shouting in and grabbed on of the guys back, crashing him against the crowd "Apologise!" She demanded while Isabel stretched her jaw.
The other guy stood up wiping his bloody lip, his eye connecting with Isabel. Cegs saw the sharp bruise appear on Isabel's face and he felt bad.
After getting a shaky apology from the guy, he ran on in fear of Tami. Tami shouted at the crowd and then went to get ice. While Isabel and Cegs walked off to get fresh air.
"Why'd you do that?" Cegs glanced at Isabel who sat crossed legged on top of the wall, away from him.
"Why'd you start a fight?" Isabel responded and hoped off the wall.
"I didn't start it..." Cegs wiped his bleeding lip. "I just fin-"
"You just finished it, yeah i know, that's exactly what Pax used to say!" And she stormed off, making Cegs curse under his breathe.
She met Tami on her way out and smiled "Thank you". Tami looked pleased she had finally gotten praise from Isabel.
"I'm Isabel by the way"
