Chapter 2

Isabel sat fidgeting outside the office. She fiddled with her many bracelets.

Footsteps sounded through the corridors. Isabel could hear someone was running towards her.

"BEL?" Jake shouted when she saw her. She looked down to her lap.

"What the hell happened?" Jake stood infront of her. She djdby reply.

"Mr. Elliot?" A tall women came out of the office. Jake nodded and followed her in.

"You're Isabels brother?" She looked up at him as they both sat down.

"That's right. Her older brother!" He joked but he could see she wasn't the joking type.

"You're still in high school?"

"Um, yeah but I'm a senior here. My older brother, Callum, he's the legal guardian of Isabel."

She didn't approve "And where's he?"

"Um, he's..." Jake had no idea where Callum was. "Working. He really wanted to be here though."

"I bet. Look Mr. Elliot, I'll skip right to the point. You're sister, she's acting out!"

"Skipping school. Fights. Failing in most classes. She's a classic case of a lost girl. She needs guidance!"

"Well, she's got lots of guidance. My sister Clare is top of her class. Practically a genius" Jake grinned.

"But she's also in high school, right?"

"Yeah, but what does that matter? I mean, sh-"

"It matters a whole hell of a lot Mr. Elliot! Does Isabel have any adults in her life?"

Jake frowned "Yeah, my older brother he's an adult. He'-"

"Yet, he didn't show up." She folded her arms "When your parents passed, I supported your families choice. I even hoped it would get better for you guys!"

"But this..." She shrugged "Your sister is drowning. You've had to miss class for this meeting. To me, this doesn't look good!"

"She'll get better. She'll work harder. I know it!" Jake told her.

"I hope so..." She stood up "Becuase if this happens again. I'll take matters into my own hands!" She shook his hand and led him out.

"One little fishy. Two little fishy..." Clare sang to Rowan. The front door slammed loudly. She knew someone was home.

"Hello?" She called out. She was nervous to tell them. She knew it wouldn't be the best news.

"ITS JUST ME!" Callum shouted. Angrier struck in Clare. She waved a smiley Rowan goodbye.

"Where were you?" She raced down. She had in pink sweats and a white t-shirt. Her hair was lose and messy.

"What do you mean? I was working...!" Callum chuckled.

"Callum! We were ringing you. Jake had to go in to a meeting for Isabel!" Clare finally came face to face with her brother. He made her feel a whole lot worse.

"What? What did Isabel do now?" Callums puffed out.

"Um...She just..." Clare stuttered "Callum, I need to tell you something?"

Callums head whipped around "Isabel? Is she ok? What ha-"

"She's fine. She's fine. It's...it's not about her..." Clare scratched the back of her neck. "Its about me..."

"What about you? Is everything ok....?" Callum looked confused at her. He already had enough on his plate.

"I...I got accepted to Craig's academy!" Clare blurted out.

Callum raised both eyebrows. He didn't really know what to say. He didn't really know what 'Craig's academy' was.

"That's...cool..." Callum looked at her uncertain with his answer.

"The Craig's academy! They only accept a hundred students a year! The students are from all around the world." Clare raved on.

"Their the best of the best. Most intelligent. Logical. Great minded people. Kids."

"So..." Callum tried to keep up "Its a high school for smart people?"

"Callum it's more then that. It's an honour to even be thought of but...I got accepted Cal!" Clare knew he wasn't understanding.

"So...what does that mean?" Callum was losing interest in Clares guessing game.

"I...I don't know..." Clare admitted. "I mean I wanna go."

"Its sound a great. It's free, right?" Callum checked.

"Yeah. It's a scholarship." Clare took a deep breath "But it's Washington..."

Callum eyes widened. This was bad.

Callum said he'd take Rowan for awhile while Clare cleaned up the house a little and prepared to tell the others.

They had gotten some ice-cream that dribbled on down Rowans t-shirt.

They drove around the city before Callum stopped at his favourite place. It was a little outside the city, nearer home.

Callum picked Rowan up and sat down on a small bench across the street. He balanced Rowan on his lap.

"Hey Ro, you see that place over there! The rusty car shop. Well, that used to be where our dad worked."

"He used to own the place. You remember going there? You probably don't but it's ok. I'll remember for you!" He chuckled.

"Daddy..." Rowan mumbled. He frequently said a few words. Ones that were very significant though.

"Yeah, yeah, that's right little guy. Daddy." Callum nodded. He glanced at the diner beside it. "And that there...that's where mom worked. Before I came along of course."

"She was waitress there when dad came in one day lookin' for a grilled cheese. God, the amount of times I heard them tell that story!"

"Its how they first met. The start of their love story." He's eyes watered a little but he kept it in.

"Well, look who it is!" A voice laughed behind him. A spike of fear shot up Callum till he turned around and saw old man Jim.

"Jim, good to see you!" He would of shaken his hand but Rowan was in the way.

"Aww...Look at this guy! How old is he now?" He played around with Rowan.

"Two...around that age." Callum stuttered.

"You looking at the old shop? Gotten rusty!"

"Yeah, it's definitely...changed." Callum nodded.

"Sure has. So what brings you round these parts? Looking for your sister?"

"My sister?" Callum frowned.

"Yeah, Isabel. Comes round here everyday after school. Sometimes during. She stands here and stares at the old place!" He explained.

"I...I didn't know she came here." Callum thought.

"We're home!" Jake's voice came through the door. Isabel followed him.

The journey home was silent. Jake was pretty mad at Isabel. Isabel didn't say what she had done but Jake didn't care.

"Hey guys! How'd it go?" Clare asked nicely. She smiled at Jake and Isabel.

"Ok..." Jake frowned at his sister. She was smiling like crazy.

"What's up with your face?" Isabel barged past her into the kitchen.

"You feeling ok?" Jake patted her on the back and yelled after Isabel "Bel, we need to talk!"

"No we don't!"

"I'm smiling. Nothing's wrong with my face. I'm just smiling!" Clare looked afended.

"Bel, what happened in school?" Jake towered over her as Isabel started her homework.

"Guys, I need to tell you something." Clare chipped in.

"One sec Clare. Bel, Your principal practically threatened me about calling social services!"

"See, I got the letter today..." Clare talked on and on.

"Maybe social services do need to know what's going on!" Isabel suggested making Jake madder.

"And its a really big deal to be chosen..."

"Take that back!" Jake pointed at her.

"No"

"And I know it's far away..."

"Bel, TAKE. IT. BACK."

"NO."

"And I think this place would be really good for me..."

"ISABEL!"

"JACOB!"

"So, I guess Clare told you then..." Callum walked in with Rowan in his hands.

"TOLD US WHAT?" Jake and Isabel yelled at the same time.

Clare auitened down a bit. Her hands began to sweat. Callum was hard to tell. Jake and Isabel were impossible.

"About Craig's academy..." Callum realised they didn't know what he was on about.

Everyone was looking at Clare for answers. Clare ignored them and took Rowan off Callum, setting him down in his chair.

"Craig's academy?" Isabel stared at Clare "Like...in Washington?" Isabel knew.

"Washington? What's going on here?" Jake frowned at Clare.

Clare didn't say anything. She didn't know what to say. This was her big chance.

"Its suppose to be really hard to get in. Only a handful of kids are picked!" Callum explained. Jake still didn't get it.

"And she got a full scholarship! Everything paid for!" Callum talked on. Clare couldn't look at Jake or Isabel.

Isabel watched her sister "You're gonna go, aren't you?"

"GO where?" Jake questioned looking at them all for answers.

The kitchen was quiet with anticipation. Isabel and Callum waited for Clare to speak. Jake didn't know what he was waiting for.

"Its a really big deal..." Clare manadged to say before Isabel put her head in her hands and shook her head.

Callum let out a loud breath and grinted his teeth. Jake finally got it.

"Im not gonna go anywhere if it messes things up here!" Clare explained. Callum thought while Jake just looked hurt.

"Of course it's gonna mess things up. The deal was all five of us stay here!" Isabel told her.

"Lay off Bel" Callum hissed at Isabel.

"No. The only reason you're ok with this is becuase it won't look so bad when you leave too!"

"Hey, I'm not going anywhere!" Callum yelled. Clare was waiting for Jake to say anything.

"This is my one shot guys!" Clare told them all. Isabel grabbed her books.

"You know what Clare, screw you!" And she stormed off.

Clare looked at Jake. He opened his mouth but nothing came out. He walked out of the kitchen sadly.

"I'm behind you C" Callum grinned at her but he couldn't help but feel like the water was getting higher.
