TWENTY-THREE
Yelling. Lots of yelling.
That's how yesterday went. Yelling when Joe found out about Andy's affair, yelling when Joe ended things, yelling from everyone except Pete when Andy showed up at the party.
Now, Pete is lying in his own bed, Joe snoring next to him, Patrick on the other side dosing in and out, and Horacio staring at the ceiling at the foot of the bed.
"What are you thinking about?" Pete asks Horacio, leaning up so he can look at the boy.
Horacio shrugs, "Mostly about how much my face hurts. Who knew Hurley could throw punches like that?"
"I don't know. I'm proud of you for not punching back, though." Pete says, offering some sort of truce after everything that happened last night.
"I'd have completely obliterated him if I hit him one time. Of course I didn't punch back. Expulsion wouldn't have been the only thing I'd have faced if I'd have thrown a punch." Horacio admits, basically telling Pete that he's not that good of a person. He just didn't want to lose his powers and everything he'd built at this school over one jealous ex boyfriend.
Patrick turns over then, making grabby hands at his boyfriend. Pete sighs and lies back, letting himself be pulled into Patrick's grip.
"You two make me sick." Joe mumbles, flipping over to look at Pete and Patrick. "How's everyone holding up after the scream fest?"
"I think I've lost my voice." Patrick says, and they all laugh, which is what Patrick was hoping for if the smile on his face is any indication.
"Poor Andy, though, huh?" Horacio asks, climbing up to squeeze in between Joe and Pete. "All of us here without him. It's like he got booted from the friend group, and I took his place."
Just like that, silence has overtaken the rest of the group. Which, Pete will admit, is a lot better than yelling.
"Fuck Andy." Joe says simply, and Horacio and Patrick both make agreeing noises. Pete keeps his mouth shut, and his eyes follow suit as he finds himself thinking about the events of last night again.
"I fucking love you! We broke up two fucking hours ago, and you're with this fucking jerk already? What the fuck?" Andy demands, trying to move Joe out of the way so he can successfully punch Horacio.
"You love me? Bull-fucking-shit. Brendon! Remember him? Go feed your lies to someone who will believe them, because I'm done being left in the dark about all your dirty fucking secrets!" Joe screams back, pushing at Andy's chest with every word.
"Go to your dorm, Andy." Patrick says calmly, squeezing in between Joe and Andy. "Today is not the day to try to work things out. Enough has happened today."
"I know this asshole isn't trying to force me away. Move your fucking ass, shorty; a few punches are already coming your way at a later date!" Andy threatens, and Patrick just rolls his eyes, not moving at all.
"Andy, go the fuck home." Patrick still remains calm in the midst of the yelling, taking one finger and pushing Andy away from him so they're no longer in each other's personal space.
"No! I'm not going anywhere until that fucking child takes his fucking hands off of my fucking boyfriend." Andy yells back, his jaw clenching immediately. Everyone in the room's eyes flicker from Andy to Joe and Horacio. Sure enough, Horacio's hands are on Joe's lower back, comforting the older boy. This time, Andy successfully lands a punch on Horacio, right in his mouth. Which begins to bleed seconds later.
"Stop it! I'm not your anything, anymore! And apparently I never was!" Joe seems more sad than anything after he says that, but the tone of his voice never changes: loud and angry.
Finally, Pete knows it's time to step in. He walks over to Andy and grabs his arm, dragging him away from the two screaming boys and one calm one.
"Tomorrow, Andy. Talk to him tomorrow. Seriously, this isn't getting either of you anywhere. I will keep an eye on him, okay? Go home." Pete says as he walks Andy away from the rest of the group. Andy sighs and nods.
"Thank you." He says simply, taking one more look at Joe, who is trying and failing miserably to focus on Horacio, and walking off.
Pete is brought back to the present by a knock on the door. "Let me get it." He immediately jumps out of the bed and rushes out, finding Andy when he opens it.
He quickly walks out and closes the door behind him before anyone else can see who's outside. He moves the both of them completely out of view of the peephole and the window.
"He's in there, isn't he?" Andy asks, leaning his head against the wall. "And I've completely fucked everything up."
"It's cold out here." Pete mumbles, trying to take Andy's mind off of things, but he's not lying. Snow is falling on the ground past the balcony ledge, and all Pete's wearing is a pair of boxers.
Andy sighs and shrugs his cardigan off, handing it to Pete, who just smiles apologetically and takes the coat, wrapping up in it quickly. Andy turns back to look at Pete.
"Why?" Andy asks simply, and Pete's eyebrows furrow in confusion.
"Why what?" He says, scratching the back of his neck when Andy just stares at him for a good thirty seconds.
"Why are you being so nice to me? I've been nothing but a dick to you since you've been here, and you're the one trying to fix things for me. Not my 'best friend,' just you." He air quotes around the words, and Pete knows he's talking about Patrick.
"I knew there was something different about you. Some reason you didn't want to get close to me. And now that I know what it is, I'm not going to hold it against you." Pete explains quickly, chancing a look back at the door. By now, he's sure all three of them know it's Andy but have no desire to start another screaming match.
"And that reason is?" Andy asks, wondering if Pete actually has it figured out or not.
"You're attracted to me. And you don't want to hurt Joe again by getting too close to another one of Patrick's boyfriends. No matter if he knew about it or not. Am I right?" Pete tells Andy his theory, and Andy just drops his head, huffing out a breath, which can be seen in the air. Fuck, it's cold.
"Pretty much. Do you think I'm an awful person?" Andy wonders aloud, and Pete finds himself shaking his head.
"No. I think you made an awful decision once that ended with Brendon threatening to tell Joe what happened. So you kept it a secret." Pete's theory is wild, and he knows it. But he's not wrong. And he knows that, too.
"How do I fix it then? I love him, Pete. And to see him at that party with fucking Baker. That shit hurts, man." Andy's fists ball up at his side as he thinks about Joe and Horacio together.
"I hate to say this, but time. He's going to hoe around. You can't expect him not to. But he'll come back to you. There's not another you out there." Pete tells Andy, offering a tight-lipped smile. Andy nods his head.
"Thanks for chatting with me, man. You've helped a lot." Andy pats Pete's shoulder and walks back towards the elevator. Pete sighs, turning around and walking back to his dorm to deal with three probably angry teenage boys.
