FIVE
ace is played by richard madden. so he's scarily attractive and just plain scary
Patrick walks Pete to his room after they all break up. They skipped dinner because Patrick didn't feel like being around more people, and no one argued with him.
The boys stop in front of Pete's room. Patrick hugs him before trying to walk off. Pete stops him with a hand on his wrist. "Can you promise me something?" Pete asks, wrapping his arms around Patrick's neck.
Patrick freezes for a second before his hands slip around to pool at Pete's lower back, pulling him closer. His eyes widen as he nods.
"Promise me you'll tell someone if he's taking advantage of you." Pete mumbles, his eyes anywhere but Patrick's face. Patrick removes one of his hands from Pete's back to his chin to tip it up so their eyes meet. He has a soft smile on his face. He nods slowly, letting his hand go back to where it was.
Patrick leans in, giving Pete plenty of time to pull away before he kisses Pete's cheek. He winks at Pete, whose face has gone a bright red, before letting a hand trail to Pete's hip. He squeezes once before walking away.
Pete watches Patrick until Patrick reaches the elevator, climbing on without a look back. Pete opens his door and falls onto his bed almost immediately, thinking about the events of today.
He's learned three things today: one, Ace is up to something and cannot be trusted. Two, Principal Rodgers is fucking crazy. Three, Patrick Stump is quite possibly the hottest - no pun intended - guy Pete's ever met.
Pete falls asleep shortly after, a certain fiery red head being the only thing on his mind.
--
The next morning, Pete sleeps past his alarm. It's not something unusual - he did all the time back home when he went to his old, normal high school - but it's the first time he's done it here.
He wakes up feeling like absolute shit, turning over and dosing back off almost as soon as he opens his eyes and checks his clock. The next time he wakes up, it's because someone is standing over him.
It's Ace. He doesn't have to open his eyes to know it. He does anyways, turning his head to the side and coughing into his fist. "You think you can just sleep all day and miss my class?" Ace questions, pulling the covers off of Pete.
"I don't feel good." Pete says, his voice deeper than usual and his words harder to understand. Ace doesn't flinch, rolling his eyes.
"Get up and go to the infirmary." Ace says, throwing a pair of jeans and a random t-shirt at Pete, whose eyes widen in surprise.
"Why are you giving me regular clothes?" Pete asks, a bewildered look on his face. He stands
up, suddenly conscious of the face he's only in boxers. Ace isn't looking at him, however, which is odd since there's no telling what he did to Patrick yesterday.
"You're sick, and you're questioning my pick of your outfit?" Ace asks, looking down at his feet, which are clad in some kind of Adidas shoes. Pete pulls his jeans on, ignoring Ace's question. He buttons his short sleeve button up afterwards, pulling his plain black Vans on with it. Before he can grab a jacket, Ace says, "If you're sick, you don't have to be in uniform to go to the infirmary."
Pete pulls his school cardigan on because he doesn't feel like digging in his duffle - which he still hasn't unpacked even though it's been three weeks - for a different jacket. He and Ace walk together to the infirmary in silence.
When they get there, the same lady that was there the other day is in there. She smiles at him, waving when he walks in the door. Her face drops when she sees who he's with, and she crosses her arm, narrowing her eyes at Ace.
"What do you want, you jerk?" She hisses at Ace, rolling her eyes when he laughs. He takes a step towards her and grabs her chin in one of his large hands.
"That's no way to talk to a patient, baby girl." He says, and her face softens for a split second before she pushes him away. He laughs again, throwing an arm around Pete.
"My boy Pete here is not feeling too hot." He says, laughing after a second. "Get it? Because he's a water bender?" When neither of them laugh, he narrows his eyes at both of them, walking towards the door. "I'll be back to get Pete in about thirty minutes. Keep him away from fire, it's his weakness."
"My weakness?" Pete mumbles when Ace leaves. The lady grabs his arm and leads him to a table, making him sit down.
She checks his temperature before saying, "He's right. The necklaces. They're not just for controlling your power. They give you a weakness. Your's is Fire, Patrick's is Water, Andy's is Air, and Joe's is Earth. They partner you up with your opposite to get you used to your weakness."
Pete's eyes widen, and he nods, thinking about yesterday when Patrick came back with wet hair and different clothes. "That son of a bitch." He mumbles, starting to stand up.
"Where are you going?" She asks, pushing him to sit back down.
"I need to talk to Patrick." Pete says, trying to get up again. She pushes him back down one last time and looks to her left at the door.
"You don't have to go anywhere for that." She says, and Patrick, Andy, and Joe walk in the door a few seconds later. They - including Andy - look relieved to see Pete. "He's gone for about twenty, twenty-five more minutes."
"Thanks, Alyssa." Joe says, patting her back. He and Andy step over to the waiting part, leaning Pete and Patrick by the bed behind the curtain.
"Are you okay?" Pete murmurs, putting a hand to Patrick's forehead and running it through his hair as he looks the boy up and down. Patrick's eyebrows furrow in confusion as he cups Pete's face, nodding. "I know what he does to you. I know what Ace does to you." Patrick freezes, his eyes wide as he shakes his head. "I'll kill him. I'll fucking kill him, Patrick. He can't use your weakness against you."
Patrick hugs Pete tightly, and Pete hears that voice again in his head. M'fine. I promise. He just hugs back with equal force. Patrick kisses his forehead after he pulls away.
"Don't leave me. Don't. Don't go." Pete says, pulling Patrick back to him. The latter lets his hands rest on Pete's hips and looks him in the eyes.
I have to go. Before he gets back. I'm sorry. I'll see you later. Patrick kisses Pete's forehead again before squeezing Pete's hip and leaving.
"I've never seen him warm up to someone so quickly." The lady - Alyssa - says, walking back to where Pete is.
"No? What about that guy last year?" Pete asks, his curiosity getting the best of him. Alyssa visibly winces, checking Pete's throat.
"Your throat is red. Does it hurt?" She asks, and when Pete nods, she adds, "Urie. Brendon Urie. He and Patrick dated, and he got into some sort of.. accident after they broke up. It caused him to lose his power. And he had to leave the Academy because he was of no use." Alyssa explains, going to grab something and coming back. "This'll only hurt for a second. I want you to go back to your dorm and sleep it off for the rest of the day. You'll be fine tomorrow."
She gives him a shot, a red bandaid - that reminds him of Patrick - and sends him on his way. Ace meets him in the hallway and walks him to his room.
Pete doesn't speak to him at all, shutting the door in his face and falling to the bed.
