Chapter Two.

The old wooden door creaked loudly as I opened the door to the old orphanage.

My home.

The scent of dinner, most likely eaten and completely gone after mere minutes of it being done, filled the air as I draped my cloak over the hook of the coat rack.

A soft scuffling and the sound of footsteps filled the silence, causing me to glance at the staircase where a familiar head of blonde hair stumbled down the steps followed by a head of red hair and black curls.

" Hey, girls." I greeted the three little girls as they ran over to hug my legs.

The little blonde girl made soft chirp sounding noises as she pulled away with a large smile. Her name is Jade, she's only two years old.

The other two girls are Ruby and Olive, Ruby is two and Olive is three.

Jade, Ruby and Olive are all Drachenköter. Jade and Ruby are fraternal twin sisters, left to die in the middle of the forest while Olive was taken from her mother by the Peacekeepers.

Jade had an adorable chubby face with beautiful blonde hair with beautiful blue and green feathers lacing through her hair and the same unnatural, birdlike yellow eyes that most Drachenköter shared. Her skin was a beige with warm undertones and she had full, pink lips. The beautiful blue and green feathers cover her forehead, sprouting from between her eyebrows like a plumage. Her eyelids, the sides of her nose and the apples of her cheeks were tinted blue, like Ruby's, though Ruby's were a light red. While Jade had green along her eyelids and lining the blue, Ruby had a black.

Ruby had a cute little chubby face as well, but she had red hair rather than blonde. But her eyes were the same as every Drachenköter and she was just as sweet as her sister.

Olive had curly black hair with dark honey colored skin and the same blue and green coloring as Jade's but instead of green, she had a light russet brown.

The three adorable girls were inseparable, but were usually accompanied by a young Drachenköter boy named Rusty.

Rusty was a cute little boy with brown flecks tinting his Drachenköter eyes and wavy, untamed black hair that he could wear in a small ponytail. Rusty was five years old and had light beige skin with slightly squinted eyes.

Rusty was a Owl breed Level 1 dragon, so his plumage was a soft brown with black speckles while the apples of his cheeks, the side of his nose and eyelids were a very light brown. The lining of the brown and his eyelids were traced in white.

" Where's Rusty?" I questioned as I ruffled Jade's hair, causing her to let out a soft, chirpy giggle before making a motion for me to follow her, which I did.

Olive gripped my right hand as the girls led me towards the stairs and into my room where Rusty lay on my bed asleep.

" Ah, makes sense. You guys staying in my room tonight again?" I questioned as I set my bag down beside my bed.

The three girls chirped in reply, signalling that my reply was yes.

" Alright. Anybody give you trouble while I was gone?" I began to dig through my old drawer, pulling out my nightgown after I finally found it.

Silence filled the room after my question was asked, that alone answered my question.

I let out a low growl before quickly calming myself at the frightened chirps the girls let out.

" Was it Maverick?" I questioned after a moment as I turned to the still frightened toddlers.

The silence and the way the quickly averted their gazes answered my question for me.

" That little..." I growled as I stalked from the room, towards where Maverick stayed.

My fists banged on the worn door, causing a few loud cracks to fill the silence.

" No!" A male's voice yelled from within the room, making me growl as I wiggled the door handle, finding it locked. I backed up before kicking open the door.

" What have I told you about messing with my kids?" I snarled, letting my pupils narrow to slits as I glared at the brunette boy on the bed, who backed up nervously. The young children were like little siblings to me, so I referred to them as my kids, as I literally and figuratively took them under my wing.

" Listen, they were bugging me and I lost my temper, it won't happen again..." Maverick stuttered nervously which made me growl quietly.

" It had better not happen again, Maverick.... Or I might have to do something drastic." I say through my slightly sharpened teeth, smoke billowing out of my nose as I exhaled, making Maverick gulp.

" Y-Yes, ma'am..." Maverick whispered which made me smirk

" Good boy." I grin, my eyes and teeth returning to normal as I turned and made my way out of his room.

" Let me know if he bothers you again." I say which made Ruby let out a chirpy giggle as she lay back down on my bed.

" Well? Get under the blankets, it's cold." I grinned which made the girls smile as they all scurried to get under the quilt, waking Rusty in the process.

Rusty looked up at me with a yawn, making me grin as recognition flashed in his eyes as he chirped excitedly.

" Hello to you too, Rusty." I laughed, watching as the excited toddler climbed under the blanket with the other things toddlers.

I blew out the candles and quickly got changed before sliding into the bed with the small kids who snuggled closer to me for warmth.

This was normally how my nights went, I would come home to find the four toddlers waiting for me in my bed and occasionally they would have a new book or something for me to read.

Though I never knew my mother or father, I knew I had a family right here with the four of them.
