Interview

Evangeline woke up earlier than usual.

The suddenness of the job interview plagued her mind. Evangeline went straight to researching everything that was on the business card.

Her confidence slowly dwindled when realizing how influential the company that Ikan worked for was. The Pierce Corporation worked with the United States Military on creating military weaponry, but what was surprising was that before that, it used to work on creating medicine for the poor.

It was found that the CEO, named Haxton, came from an influential family and traveled around the world. Some articles that were found stated that he was moved by the horrid conditions in the Middle East and parts of Africa, and that his corporation was inventing healthier medicine.

The more Evangeline researched, the more she found that the CEO, Hexton, suffered a car accident while he was driving with his fiancée. There wasn't a lot of information other than that there was a drunk driver who was responsible. It was a sad situation, but after doing all her research, Evangeline believed that the accident possibly changed Hexton for the worse.

Ikan wanted to hire someone to care for Hexton, but Evangeline contemplated whether or not it would be the right decision. She even called Tammy after doing her research and told her everything.

Tammy was surprised but reccommended her to give it a try. Working for an influential individual could open many opportunities for her. "Listen, Eva, go take the interview and answer the questions the best you can. Be honest. When the time comes to ask your questions, make sure you know what you need to. You got this, girl!"

Tammy's words echoed throughout her mind. "Yet, she told me to take my time to find myself. Ay, Tammy. Though she's right. I know I should be looking for a job, but I should also try to relax. Still,  have my loans and bills to pay." Evangeline sat up from her bed and looked through her emails. She sent her resume at the designated time and noticed a new email from Ikan.

He responded that her resume was received and looked forward to speaking with her.

Evangeline looked over everything that she had researched to remember, just in case Ikan asked her about the company and more. She also read more about the CEO to be safe. Afterward, Evangeline cleaned up and got ready when it was almost time to go to her interview.

Fixing herself professionally, she looked at her reflection, and she wore a professional black skirt with a long-sleeved, buttoned-up shirt and an undershirt. Her hair was tied with small handmade earrings and she wore black short heels. "Okay, I'm ready."

She walked out of her apartment, got into her car, and drove off toward her interview destination. The location was thirty minutes away, which wasn't too bad since traffic wasn't congested later in the morning. However, Evangeline did think about the driving distance and the gas, but Ikan mentioned that she would be paid handsomely. "I might as well take the risk."

The drive went smoothly, and she eventually arrived at her destination. The building was tall and elegant on the outside. It made her curious to think about how it looked on the inside. When finding a parking space and getting out of her car, it was surprising to find out that there were security guards on stand, and people had to get permission to get out of the parking space.

When giving one of them her information, the guard let her through a gate to walk inside the building. "Wow, this place has the maximum security. Well, that is what happens when you own the company that creates military weaponry." Inside, there were chandeliers, pots of many plants, and a small pond with fish on the floor that was covered with glass. There was also an elevator and a guest desk. Going to the guest desk, she asked, "Excuse me, I have an interview with Mr. Ikan Hassan. Would you happen to know which level he is located on?"

The receptionist looked at Evangeline from head to toe and scoffed as if telling her that she didn't belong. "On the tenth floor."

"Thank you." Evangeline pushed the button where elevator doors immediately opened. The highest level was ten, and she pushed the button; the doors closed. "Well, that was pretty rude of that lady. Pretty stuck up. Well, what's there to expect? She works for a darn powerful company. Still, it's no excuse to act like a-"

*DING*

The elevator doors opened, and before her were only two doors.

One of the doors was longer and wider than the other, which was on the right side of it. It was quiet, making Evangeline nervous. She slowly walked out of the elevator and walked to the door on the right side. There was a golden sign on the door that had Ikan's name. "I'm on the right door." Taking a deep breath, she knocked on the door.

"Enter."

Evangeline took a deep breath, opened the door, and slowly entered the office. She was amazed at how decently sized it was compared to many offices she had been in. "Hello, Mr. Hassan. I arrived."

Ikan looked up from his paperwork, stood up, and smiled. "Ah, Miss Cortes. I am glad that you arrived," he said while extending his hand.

Evangeline closed the door behind her, walked forward, and then shook his hand. "Thank you for inviting me. I must say that you have a lovely office."

"Why, thank you. I am a simple man with simple taste. Please, sit." He motioned for her to sit on the chair in front of his desk.

Both sat on their respective seats, and Ikan took out Evangeline's resume. "I took a look at your resume, and I must say that I am very impressed with your experience as a BCBA. First off, tell me about yourself."

"Well, my name is Evangeline, and I have worked as a BCBA for a couple of years, and before that I was a behavior technician where I worked with individuals with different special needs at different ages."

"I see. So what ages have you worked with?"

"Individuals from four years old to twenty-six."

"Oh, so you have worked with adults before?"

"Yes."

Ikan nodded as he looked down at her resume. He had read it many times. He had secretly researched Evangeline, and she had the experience he was looking for. She had worked with different behaviors and had loans to pay. Ikan knew that she would accept the job, but she was cautious. He couldn't blame her.

He continued to ask her many questions and scenarios, and she answered them with flying colors. Evangeline told him a lot about her research, and he knew that she was prepared. "Alright, do you have any questions?"

"Yes, what would be the schedule if I get the job?"

"Monday-Friday from 10 a.m.- 6 p.m., and you will receive full benefits."

"Oh, okay. So, I will be working for Mr. Haxton Pierce, and you say that I will be his caregiver, and will I need to...well..."

"Oh, no. He can do the private necessities himself, but sometimes he needs help with exercises and being more social. You will be trained by the physical therapist since he can't always be there. Part of your job is to also keep him company. You plan events for you both to go."

"One last question. What is he like?"

Ikan didn't expect that type of question, but he couldn't lie. "He doesn't know that I am doing this."

The answer was unexpected. "Excuse me? You want to hire a caregiver, but you're doing this behind his back? I am not sure that I would be comfortable with-"

"I understand, but I am doing this because he does need help. You have experience with behavior, so I know you are strong-willed. I will pay you more than what you were earning as a BCBA, and I will give you a month's probation to see if you are able to do the job. Then, you can make your choice on whether or not the job is right for you. What do you say?"

Evangeline was silent and thoughtful. There were many red flags, but she would receive good pay and benefits. Also, it would look good on her resume, and she would be able to pay off her loans. There was much at stake, but she made her decision.

"Alright, I'll give it a try."

Ikan smiled. "Perfect, then you're hired. I will give you the paperwork and will give you the rest of the information."
