Chapter seven
Walking to school the next morning, I listen to my music as it plays while admiring the surroundings. As the vehicles drove past me. I stopped at a crosswalk scanned both ways before running across the street to the sidewalk. Walking along the side lines, I saw Mason sitting in the shade on his phone.
He didn't see me so I went inside to get my books ready. Setting my bag aside undoing my lock. Preparing for math I get my books and stuff my bag into the locker. Setting the books aside I play on my phone.
Soon, everyone started coming in getting prepared for the day. The bell rang as the crowd moved two ways as I got dragged along with one of the paths, or I will be pushed along. Walking into class as I wasn't the last one.
Sighing, I sat at my desk waiting for Kristy.
Five minutes after the bell, Kristy hadn't shown.
During lunch, I sat with Jane and Justin as Kristy hadn't shown all morning. Maybe just sick. I texted her to see how she's feeling. Tucking my phone inside my sweater pocket telling them both that Kristy hasn't been here all morning.
"Has she told any of you of her absence?" I asked. They both shook their heads.
"Probably sick." Justin suggested taking a bite of his salad. Jane showed fear but not a lot. "Are you okay, Jane?" I ask.
"Yeah, but I'm kind of worried about Kristy. It's not like her to not respond, or at least she would tell us."
"Kristy's probably sick to the point where she can't move." I assured her. Butterflies formed in my stomach. It wasn't like Kristy to not tell us that she's abandoning us today. Munching on our lunch the bell rang then we got all packed up and ready for our next class. Walking in the room I sat in my seat with Hudson beside me.
I tried not to look at him as I didn't want attention. But he caught me.
"Hey sweetie." he said to me. Ignored him.
Hearing his chair screech towards me, I couldn't help but look. "What do you want, Hudson?" I snarled.
"Come down, sweetheart."
"Don't call me that and I won't kill you."
"Okay . . . chill. Anyways, I wanted to talk to you about Saturday."
Hesitating, I finally let him in. "Look, no matter what you guys say, I will join your group. Your group is fun to be around especially what happened on Saturday. What I wanted to say to you is that Kristy said to me some words when we were alone. 'Beware of Satan and all his friends, if you mess up, you'll be dead.' What does it mean?"
Shrugged my shoulders a bit stunned. Kristy will never say that, or so I think. "I don't know, bud. You're going to have to ask her yourself. Speaking of, have you heard from her? She hasn't been here all day and usually she would tell us."
"No."
"Alright class, take out your books."
At the end of the day, I packed my things and left school alone. On the way I called Kristy. It rang non stop and her voice mail came on. After the ring I sent her a message hoping she would get it. Stopping to plug in my earphones to listen to music.
Joggers passed by with strollers or dogs as cars zoomed passed. The wind hurled around me swaying my hair. Pulling my hood over my hair once I pushed the button on the lights. My music blasted in my ears. When the little man said I could cross, I did look both ways.
I stopped by Timmy's to get a large Ice Cap and a glazed donut on the way home. Drinking on as I went through the garage. Unpacking my school stuff, I quickly did my homework. I checked my phone to see if Kristy responded.
No answer.
I texted her once again and called her cell, even her home phone. I knew her parents were out for the week so I couldn't contact them. I ate my donut in delight as I watched TV packing away the work.
Scrolling through youtube, Most Amazing Top 10 videos of paranormal games to not play. Clicking on it, finishing up my drink, number three came up as "The Devil's Game."
Leaning forward to listen on how to play. Pausing the show, I scurry to get pen and paper writing down the instructions. I know school is tomorrow but I can't wait to do this. When the video is done, I turn off the TV and hunt around the house for the materials. Packing in a bag, I get a water bottle and shove it in. Around seven I will drive out to find a church.
Setting the bag in the car I walked back inside the house eating a small dinner. I set an alarm for seven. I searched on the internet for an abandoned church near me. It took awhile to find a church, but soon enough I did that and wasn't abandoned. Which is okay with me.
I waited hours to go as I'm very hyped. As I waited, I took a nap so I wouldn't be tired.
My alarm suddenly went off as it was seven. I got up and left the house. Driving as the sun is setting in the distance. Driving along the abandoned road to the church, I take a drink of water as I sing along to the music that plays in the background to fill the silence.
Turning to the right onto a road that's hidden from the trees. The car rocked back and forth as I drove on the rocky road. Parking outside the church, it was almost nine. I sat in the car listening to music as I glanced up. The sky is pitch midnight black. I danced along to the song in my seat. Taking a sip of water, I glance at the mirror as headlights come my way.
The car stopped behind me and the lights were killed. The door opened as a figure walked towards me. I killed the engine getting out once I realized who it was.
Hudson walked towards me with a smug smile.
"What brings you here?" I ask.
"Making sure that you're okay."
"So you followed me."
"Basically."
"Why?"
"To make sure you don't kill yourself."
"How did you know I was going to be here?"
"I'm a magician, I know everything. When you were driving by me I spotted you with a bag full of stuff at this time of night. Knowing you love paranormal games, I suspect that you were doing something abnormal. So I followed you and here we are." He explained.
"Hudson . . ."
"Hailey?"
"Why do you care?"
"Because why not?"
"True."
"So, what are you doing out here?"
"Like you said, wanting to try a paranormal game. Is that illegal nowadays?"
He shook his head mouthing "no" before I turned around getting the bag from the car. I checked the time as it's quarter past nine. I locked my phone in the glove compartment as Hudson waited for me. Asking him if he had any electronics on him as it's part of the rules not to have them during the game. He said he had none. Walking inside the dark dusty church, we wandered around. Exploring the church.
I found a hideout in the wall leading to a small compartment.
"Hudson, come check out what I found."
Jogging over Hudson came inside wide eyed.
"Wow."
"This is where we could do it." Hudson looked at me weird.
"Get your head out of the gutter you know that's not what I mean."
"I know but the way you said it."
I set the bag down as we both looked around the claustrophobic room. A light switched to life as Hudson turned on so we could see better. The silence roamed over us as I heard fainted laughter. Spinning to face Hudson I locked gazes with his.
"Did you hear that?"
"Hear what?"
"Fainted laughter in the distance."
More laughter in the distance. This time as a child's laughter. "No." Hudson said cautiously, scanning the room. "This isn't a good idea, Hailey. We should go."
"Are you a chicken? I ain't leaving. Be my guest if you do."
Hearing more child's laughter creeped me out, but I didn't show it. "Well, if you're not leaving then I'm not."
I couldn't tell if Hudson was being brave and staying with me for my safety, or he's just being annoying. First option seems more believable.
I don't know how long we've been here but a clock on the wall strung eleven pm. "We have another hour to kill, what would you like to do?" he asks, leaning against the wall. I shrugged not knowing what to do. We stood still as the childish laughter disappeared.
We hung around the room doing nothing, not even a word came out of our dry mouths. I took a long sip of water almost finishing when I realized that Hudson stood there watching me. Without hesitation, I chucked the bottle at him, catching it in mid air. "Take the rest of it. We need our mouths moist when we speak to the devil himself."
He nodded a thanks and chugged it all down. I looked at the clock as only ten minutes had gone by.
"Okay, tell me something or I'm going to die of boredom." My sarcasm is escaping me smacking Hudson in the face.
"What do you want me to say?"
"Anything. Anything your heart desires."
He stared in confusion tilting his head. I found a table that I sat on staring him in the eyes. I hugged myself glancing at the clock. Only five minutes has passed. I sit there feeling bored. "Before I lose my sanity, you and I need to do something fast."
"Why do you hate me?"
"I don't hate you, I just think you're very annoying."
"Okay."
"Yeah. I could lie for you though."
"No don't lie."
"I'm so bored!" I moaned.
"Would you rather jump off a cliff or airplane?"
"Into water?"
"No."
"Cliff because it could be a few feet from the ground. Okay . . . would you rather kiss Jane or me?"
"You."
I blushed in embarrassment. I know it's just a game but it kind of set me. We took turns asking each other would you rather unti Hudson checked the time. Ten to.
"Should I get ready?"
"Sure." I stretched over to grab the bag and unleash everything inside. I read the instructions on how to set it up. Hudson lit the candles and we stared into the mirror. "I hope this works." I say.
We stood side by side staring into the mirror holding our candles until he appeared. I stood there in shock as I didn't know what to say. Hudson took the first sentence to him.
"Hey Mr. S-Satan. H-h-how's it going?"
I heard the stutter in his voice, glancing down as his hands shook uncontrollably.
"Why, don't be shy Hudson."
"How do you know my name?"
"Why I'm bloody hell Satan. I know everyone's names. From birth to death. So I know your friend's too, Hailey."
"Wow." I was shocked.
"I must challenge you to a game of question and response." I urged on.
"Sure." the raspy voice answered.
