Chapter Twenty-Three

She doesn't trust easily, but when she does it's always with the devil himself.
-Melody Lee

"I'm in my bed, you're in your bed." Xavier says over the phone, it's around midnight and neither of us can sleep. "One of us is in the wrong place."

"What do you want me to do about that? I'm comfortable." I giggle lightly, turning on my side so I can look out my window.

The Devil scoffs.

"I don't care." He grumpily replies. "Get that cute ass of yours up and come give me a fucking hug."

Despite wanting to stay in bed I sit up, knowing I'm not that tired and Xavier's exhausted because of parent day at Olivia's school.

People ask so many questions, and I couldn't come, Jessamine's birthday is this week and I went shopping with Cal -much to my boyfriend's displeasure.

"What if me and my cute ass just stay here?" I ask, teasing him as I silently slip my shoes on.

Thankfully this is one of the night's I'm wearing pajama shorts and one of Xavier's shirt, so the sound of me putting on pants won't let him know I'm minutes away from leaving.

"I'd be devastated because my girl would be a horrible person." He grunts, and I can imagine him turning over.

I roll my eyes, "Dramatic much."

"I'm tired." My Wolf boy growls, sounding like it. "Just come, please."

"Calm your man tits." I say with another giggle I grab my school bag, opening a draw string to stick my clothes in for tomorrow. "I'm coming. Is the door unlocked?"

"Yeah, but lock up after." Xavier yawns. "Is your Aunt okay with this?"

"She's okay with anything as long as I'm being safe about it, and I always leave a note in the kitchen if I leave. Fairy likes you, and she likes that I get actual sleep around you." I say with a shrug.

"You don't sleep well Princess," He asks, his voice a mere murmur. "When I'm not there?"

"Around you is the only time I get good sleep." I tell him, quickly scribbling a note for Aunt Faye and Jessamine before going around to my front door. "You asleep?" I ask after a while, humor lacing my tone.

"No." He replies.

His voice is so deep and husky when he's tired, and it sucks how sexy it is because when he's that tired all I could get is a small kiss.

Talk about teasing.

Xavier yawns again before continuing. "Just thinking about you."

I hum in reply, preoccupied with setting my bags down and starting the car -giggling when I hear him growl and curse under his breath at the tangled sheets.

"Have I ever told you how much I like your giggles?" My Wolf boy asks, not letting me answer. "I like them a lot. They might be...they might be my favorite sound."

My heart swells and the urge to kiss him intensifies, I have to remind myself to keep driving.

"Well," I clear my throat. "I don't know what my favorite sound is."

"If you had to pick?" Xavier breathes.

I raise a eyebrow though he can't see me. "If I had to pick my favorite sound?"

"Yeah." He confirms.

Instantly my mind shoots to different things, trying to think of one thing I could never get tired of hearing.

Julian's laughter, his singing.

Jessamine's girly squeals.

Cameron's soft voice as he helps me.

Xavier's voice, the growls he makes.

And so many more things.

But one sticks out.

"Your heart beat, I hear it all the time." I say, nodding to myself. "Every time we hug I can hear it, every time we kiss I can feel it. It's a constant thing, and I never want that to change. Your heart beat Xavier. That's my favorite sound."

"Is that true?" The Devil whispers. "How can that be someone's favorite sound? My heart beat...something as, as small as that."

"That's not small Xavier," I disagree, surprised at how strong my voice sounds. "Your heart beating keeps you alive. To me, that's huge."

"Oh." He says.

And then my boyfriend's side of the phone goes silent, and this time I know he's thinking, that he'll still be awake when I get there.

And I expect a damn hug.

"Tired, Wolf?" I ask him as he yawns.

A hug turned into a kiss and a kiss turned into a long tired, sweet kiss that kept us up until two.

And unlike me, he's used to getting a full eight hours.

"No," Xavier protest, clearly lying as he halfheartedly scowls. "I always look like this."

I snort, shaking my head as I park in the school's lot. "I'm not sure I would date a person who always looks like this, I think this might be a deal breaker."

The Devil growls under his breath, glaring daggers at me. "We're not breaking up because I'm tired."

With a small smirk I shrug, waving a hand to show off his handsome, but tired, face. "You said it yourself, you always look like that."

"Fuck you." He grunts, surprising me by grabbing my hips and pulling me over the center bar and to his lap. Pressing me into him Xavier buries his face in my hair, sighing deeply with contentment. "Much better."

You know he's really tired when he doesn't ask.

"We have class in ten minutes, we have to go. Take a nap in photography or something." I suggest, moving my hands up to play with his hair. "Schools not that bad."

"Shut up would you? I can't stand how appealing your voice is." My boyfriend tells me, making me giggle lightly.

"That's the worst argument I've ever heard for getting someone to be quiet. If anything I should talk more." I say smugly.

"No," He growls. "You should shut up and take this nap with me."

"But I'm not tired." I whine, "And I want to go to class."

"We're staying here, just for half an hour. That's all I need. Promise, just play on your phone or something." I gulp as his lips press into my temple. "Please."

I cave at the sound of his voice, firmly relaxing into him a second later. "Fine."

So I just sit there, flicking through Instagram, while listening to his heart beat.

"Where were you?" Jessamine hisses from her desk once me and Xavier are fully seated. "I was beginning to worry about you guys."

"Just took a small nap because Xavier doesn't know how to go through one class period being tired." I huff, sending him a small glare which he returns.

"I know how," My Wolf boy protests. "I just don't like it."

"You can not like something and still do it." I point out, rolling my eyes.

"Yeah, but I don't like doing that either."

"You're so annoying."

"I am not."

"Guys," Jessamine groans. "Stop with the lovers spat, some of us have films to make."

I raise a eyebrow at her and her phone, pictures of a shirtless Angel flicking across the screen making me do a double take. "You're stalking Cal's Insta Jessie, not making films."

She grins, pointing a pink nail at me. "Ah, but I never said which some of us."

"Ugh, I hate it when you say shit like that." I groan, shooting her a look. "It makes me feel so stupid."

"But my goal is to make you self aware." My supposed best friend blinks innocently at me. "I don't see why you should have a problem with it."

"You're so mean." I whine.

Jessamine winks at me, causing Xavier to smirk widely. "But you love me."

"That can change."

"Nah," She brushes off my angry grumble with ease. "I want to go swimming today, Mom set up the pool and everything. We haven't gone all year."

I make a face at this, shaking my head instantly. "No way."

"Why not?" Cal asks with a shrug. "It could be fun. Invite Cameron, he's your favorite cousin."

"Because last time I went swimming with Cam and Jessie they dragged me out to a public pool in a bikini. Let's just say Derek Damien wasn't too happy suddenly having a broken nose." I shudder lightly. "And pool water plus blood, not a good combo."

"Aw come on, that won't happen this time. It's just our pool, nobody else is gonna be there. And Derek had it coming for what he did but I promise you won't have to break another nose." Jessamine says, I raise a eyebrow at her. "Okay, so I said that last time too but I seriously mean it."

"I'm sure you do." I reply, crossing my arms stubbornly. "But it's still a no."

She throws her hands up, obviously about to protest my decision when a deep voice interrupts her.

"She doesn't want to go because she has bad memories attached to it." Xavier says, making my head snap to him as he understood that perfectly. "So until she's okay with it, stop fucking asking."

"Protective much?" Cal mutters.

We ignore him.

"Fine," Jessamine cages. "But she looks amazing in a bikini."

The Devil shrugs, shooting me a half smirk. "I've seen her naked, I'm pretty sure I know how amazing she looks. And if I want to see her in less clothing, trust me, I will."

I flush at this, and bury my face into my hands.

Beside me Xavier laughs and I'm sure his grin is feral.

"You're blushing, that's so adorable." Jessamine squeals. "I've never seen her so red unless she's around you."

My stupid boyfriend then takes my face in his hands, moving his thumbs over my cheek bones as his blue eyes scan my cheeks. "I like it."

"I don't." I mutter, pushing his face away from me. "Fuck off."

"Fuck off? No," My Wolf boy flashes his sharp teeth at me. "Fuck you? Yes."

"This is why I hate you!" I tell him, purposely scooting my chair away from my boyfriend.

Flirty teenagers.

Bah.

Jessie squeals, bouncing in her seat. "You guys are my OTP...besides me and Cal of course."

I snort at this. "You can't be your own OTP Jessie, that's not how that works."

"There aren't rules, Emmeline."

"That doesn't matter, Jessamine."

We glare at each other, but with her brown doe eyes she doesn't look very menacing.

"You're cute when you're mad." I smirk, making her glare harden. "I see why you like her Cal, but you must have to piss her off to get -Ow!"

I hiss in pain as Jessamine leaned over the table and smacked me, pressing myself into Xavier's side as a shield works as he puts a arm around me, effectively keeping my best friends attacks at bay.

Boyfriends do come in handy.

"I get you don't want to, and I get the bad memories but all I'm saying is this time you won't have a single reason not to feel safe. Cover the bad with the good." I shoot Jessie a look as she still tries to get me to swim, but she looks sincere. "I'll even help you prank Cam with that thing you've been wanting to do."

I perk up at this.

Her suggestion wasn't half bad, and I'm wiling to give it a shot.

Why not get something out of it?

Getting something out of it was a great idea, now we're all ready to go swimming in the Thatch's living room waiting for Cam to get out of the shower.

With his dirty blond hair the pink dye in his conditioner bottle should have no problem settling down. We even went as far as going to the power box and turning off the electricity in all the places that have mirrors, so he comes out without being able to check himself.

And I asked him of his shower habits, randomly yesterday, and he leaves a bit of the conditioner in.

It's perfect.

Plus the boy has a horrible sense of smell and it's not like we used bleach.

That way in the half hour the slow boy takes to get dressed with his swimming trunks, get a towel and come out it's been enough time that when he gets in the pool and washes away the rest of the dye, he'll have pink hair.

Cameron hates that color.

So naturally as his cousin I have to torment him with it.

"Lets go!" Cam says, running through the living room, crashing out through the sliding doors where we can watch him cannon ball into the pool.

A girlish scream sounds out before a large crash, making me giggle.

Sounds like he fell running for his towel.

"EMMELINE ROSE CARTER!" Cam screams from the pool. "JESSAMINE whatever your middle name is THATCH I'm going to kill you."

"Quick," Jessie whisper yells at me. "Get somewhere safe."

I make a split second decision and turn, grabbing onto the back of a unsuspecting Xavier's shoulders. He stands perfectly straight as I quickly climb up him, sitting on his shoulders.

Where else is safer than the Devil?

My Wolf boy curls his hands over my thighs, keeping me stable on him.

"Why?" He asks and although it's a perfectly reasonable question I giggle.

"Why not?" I ask back, making him give out a tiny frustrated growl.

I giggle, he growls, I need safety, he gives it.

"Protection." Cal explains, his girl having disappeared while I was climbing up my boyfriend.

Calling him my boyfriend never gets old.

My angry wet cousin charges in the room, stopping short to scan the area his eyes zone is on me and he starts to take a step forward.

"I dare you to try and fucking take her from me." Xavier says, his voice murderous.

"I wouldn't recommend getting withing hitting distance, Pinky." I crack up into laughter a second after I say this, not able to hold it together. "I'm sorry, it's just too funny."

"I know where you sleep." Cam threatens me.

I snort and look him over, clearly unimpressed.

"Yeah and apparently I know where you shower."

"Just bleach it back, idiot." Xavier snaps, probably glaring at Pinky. "But first, get in the fucking pool. We're going swimming. Cal, get your girl."

"Yes sir, Devil sir." The Angel says jokingly, raising his hand in a salute.

Giggling again I run my fingers through the Devil's classical black hair. "This was fun."

"For you..." He mutters, then sighs. "You're lucky you're mine Princess, otherwise he would have probably killed you."

"Probably." I agree. "But that's so not why I'm luck I'm yours."

"Damn straight." Xavier growls, turning his head to the side so he can lightly bite the inside of my thigh making me shiver. "But now you owe me."
