Chapter Twenty
The stars were moving in his bloodstream as he fell from heaven. When he loved, it was a heat and a desperation that he carried like a sword. And when he was angered molten lava came up and he would melt you. When he was sad he electrified the air. For you, the Devil was a your fire, your water and gold. You have learned to breathe for the Devil girl, now is not the time to hold your breath.
-Brenna Yovanoff
Macy was ecstatic about helping Olivia into her giant blue box, and even happier about the bright pink sparkly bow she got to wrap around it that was sure to burn her son's eyes out.
Around her neck is my real present to Xavier, a wolf paw print necklace that has diamonds the exact color of his eyes as claws and the words 'You're worth it.' and my signature etched into it.
I sit in his room, completely exhausted.
Because Liv won't be able to stay up for much longer, so when she wants to go to bed she'll ask to see Xavier's room first and then go to bed after he sees me.
I can hear every word the Devil says downstairs, and his voice is the only thing that stops me from freaking out completely.
Only Macy is in on this plan, but I'm sure Cal can guess what is in the giant blue and pink box.
"What the f- Ow! Mom." Xavier whines, Macy probably hit him for cussing.
"There are children present." She scolds.
"No there's not." He protests, and I'm guessing she realizes her mistake and just lets him think he's right.
"Well," Mr. Hilton- -who I've been to told to call Jack- -says. "Open it."
"Why is it pink?" The Devil asks, sounding disgusted. "That's a horrible color. And that glitter is going to be everywhere for weeks. Why did you let Cal do the decorations, you know he's obsessed with that color."
Cal, somewhere directly below me, makes a offended noise. "I am not!"
"Just open it!" An exasperated Macy shouts -aware the small child in the large box is running out of air .
For his nineteenth birthday he just wanted close friends and family.
I was suppose to be down there.
"Damn," He says, muttering something under his breath as I hear skin again skin once again as Macy smacks her son for cursing. "I'm opening it, I'm opening it."
Always so stubborn.
Hearing him grumble and complain the entire time it takes him to rip away the 4 rolls of wrapping paper I used to wrap it in is enough to make me giggle, then silence myself because if I can hear them they can hear me.
And my Wolf boy has great hearing.
I hear the ribbon fall away and hold my breath.
"Holy fuck!" His deep voice yells. I hear Xavier's body thumb back on the floor and a grunt -the noise I'm guessing he made when his little sister jumped on him. "Ollie, you're here. What the absolute...how did you get here?"
The smaller Wolf sibling giggles, and I can only imagine how happy he looks. I'm sure this time his dimples will show.
I love his dimples.
"Congrats!" The Hiltons' yell in sync. Jessie is down there, but she's as confused as Xavier is. "You officially have guardianship and have adopted Olivia." Macy adds on. "She's under your care, we set up her room. Her school paperwork is in. You got what you always wanted Zay."
He doesn't respond and only after Liv's small noise of distress do I realize the Devil must have cried.
"Thank you," Xavier says, his voice cracking as pure emotion runs through it. "Thank you so much."
"Oh," Macy says, and I can practically feel her eyes on the ceiling. "I'm not the one you should be thanking."
"What?" Xavier asks. "What did you just say?" His voice is stronger this time, an edge added into it.
"Zay," Liv says. "I want to go to bed."
"Already?" Macy asks, surprised as I am.
What is she doing?
She just saw her brother, she is supposed to actually spend time with him, make him happy before going to bed. After spending three nights with that kid I know she isn't tired already.
Then it dawns on me.
The eight year old just gave up her time with Xavier so he'd see me.
Fuck.
Why, why, why?
"Liv," Xavier's voice is deadly. "Can Mom take you to bed?"
"Mom?" Olivia asks, her voice small. "I can call you that?"
"Yes, yes." Macy stammers and I'm sure she wants to cry again. "Please, call me what you want."
"Okay! Mom can you take me to bed?" I hear a small sniff before feet smacking on the ground. "Yay!" Liv cries, and I'm almost certain her new mom just picked her up. "I love you Zay! Wake me up tomorrow."
"I will." The Devil's voice is tight.
I hear them walk away and past the stairs, I sit up in bed, my breaths ragged.
"Zay wait-" I hear Cal call him as I hear his best friend's footsteps pounding the floor.
"Where is she?" Xavier roars, his heavy steps suddenly come up the stairs. The Angel follows him, I can barely hear Jessie and Mr. Hilton talking.
"Emmeline!" He calls me, I gulp and freeze mid step as his movements do.
He must have gained control, and walked with his normal silent gait because the next thing I know his door is being slammed open. I squeak from the surprise, not able to get a single word out before I'm pushed against the wall.
The impact winds me, I breath out harshly as his body keeps a uncontrolled pressure on mine.
His lips are on mine before I can catch my breath, I struggle to keep up against the blazing fire his touch leaves behind, the intensity. All his anger, frustration and hurt come out while he kisses me, leaving me so much breathless than before.
One of his hands hold my wrists above my head as his other massive palm presses into my rib cage, effectively pinning me against the wall.
"I'm-" He cuts me off again, leaning down to kiss me again. "Xavier." I say.
But he keeps kissing me, and I keep kissing him back.
"Fuck, Emma." He growls, finally pulling away to face me. Those blue eyes of his, they swallow me whole as they shine with unshed tears. "Thank you so much."
"W-what?" I stutter, remembering at the same time how warm he makes me as heat travels through my spine. "You're not mad?"
The Devil smirks, sharp teeth on display. "I never said that."
Before I can respond his head shoots past my jaw, canines burying into the soft skin of the crevice of my neck.
I gasp, tensing as his other hand holds the opposite side of my neck -knowing what that means. He digs into me harder, jaw clamping down as my body arching into him as more pain than pleasure floods me letting me know just how mad he is.
Keeping the pressure of his teeth on me for a good minute I practically melt as he pulls away, gripping my wrists tighter.
"Just had to get that out of my system." Xavier grins in a feral way.
I take a deep breath, my chest bumping into his as I do. "Fair enough." I say, my voice shaky.
"Why didn't you tell me?" The Devil asks, his voice betraying how confident he looks.
I gulp, cowering away from the blue gaze. "If, if it didn't work I didn't want you to be disappointed. I didn't want you to get your hopes up over something as important as this, only to be let down. That would be devastating."
"And you leaving wouldn't be?" He asks with a edge to his voice.
My grey eyes flicker back to his as I shake my head.
He sighs, dropping my wrists and stepping back.
As the cold air hits me I shiver, the heat that was pressed against me too hot compared to the room.
Hell fire I presume.
"Are, are we okay? You don't need to ask." I tell him, noticing the hesitancy once he sees how my hands shake at my sides he grabs them, raising them to his mouth and kissing each knuckle.
Sometimes I think his touch is addictive.
Dropping my hands he grabs my hips, pulling my back into him. "We are but," He bites his lip before continuing. "If you ever leave like that again we won't be."
"I didn't want to not tell you, I did. So bad. I knew what could, what could happen to us. But I was so confident my plan would work so it was worth it." I remember my birthday present to him and smile lightly. He is worth it. "I wanted you to be happy."
"Princess if I had everything in the world but you I still wouldn't be happy." I giggle at this, making him bite his lip again. "Still...I don't know how I could ever repay you for what you gave me back today."
I blink up at him, taken aback by the sincerity in his voice. "A kiss, maybe?" I say, tilting my head up.
He smirks, arms becoming a prison on either side of me as he leans down. The Devil brushes his lips over mine before pulling away, letting our breath mingle.
"Oh," I shake my head, curling my finger's around his pant buckles. "If you want to repay me it's going to have to be one hell of a kiss compared to that."
Taking this as a challenge Xavier spends the next ten minutes kissing me like his life depends on it, digging his hips into mine -we're careful not to let ourselves get carried away.
It's over all too soon but we're both panting heavily. "Yeah," I say breathlessly. "We're definitely even."
Xavier chuckles, just resting against me for a moment. "I promised Jessie I'd actually watch a movie with her instead of going straight to bed. Girl loves her horror."
"Yeah, it's weird. I'm sure Liv is up for a movie though, as long as it's a Disney." I add absentmindedly, not catching the mischievous spark in his sparkling blue eyes before it's too late.
Suddenly I'm thrown over his shoulder, his thick arm curled around knees while he hands me upside down. I squeak loudly, wrapping my arms around his waist so I feel like I won't fall even though I know he'd never let me.
"Yep," He pats my ass cheekily. "Definitely even."
"I hate you more than words can describe." I mutter, making him laugh and turn his head to the side and kiss the exposed skin that shows off my back dimples. "Where's Demon? I'd much rather enjoy his company."
The Devil snorts, not believing me for a second. "He's at your house, since I'd probably burn him if you tried to force that creature on me."
"What is this, this Wolf Trials?" I ask sardonically. "Demon's an adorable creature, cute really. Just like you."
"I am not cute." Xavier protests as we finally reach his sister's room. It even has her name In glittery blue letter and I realize they must have hung them up after Macy but her to bed. "Come on Ollie, movie time."
Instantly the eight year old throws the door open, stopping short when she sees me peering at her upside down over her older brothers shoulder.
"Ooo!" Liv squeals. "Pick me up too." My jaw drops at this, but Xavier only chuckles. "I wanna sit on your shoulder, Zay." She whines.
"Okay, okay." The Devil laughs. "Here," He says, bending down. "Wait, what's on your neck? I don't remember that."
My heart pounds at this, and I hold my breath.
"It's from Emmie!" Olivia says, bouncing in her step. "Read it, read it! Wait..." Her small fingers struggle to take it off. "Wear it first."
Xavier patiently does what she says, his breath catching as he reads it.
"You are too," The Devil tells me, kissing my skin once again.
Relief floods me.
He's not mad and he likes it, he got his little sister and his girlfriend back.
He's okay.
I try to squirm from his hold as Liv climbs up him and sits on his shoulder, but he tightens his hold. "Where do you think you're going Princess?"
"Down." I huff.
"I knew you were a princess!" Olivia exclaims, and I simply don't have the energy to correct her.
I'm still exhausted.
These past two week I've had lots of nightmares, and no one to wake me up from them. The stress of getting Olivia and then having to face everyone ate away at me, affecting my sleep.
I was wrong, the nightmares weren't getting any better.
Xavier was chasing them away.
"Both your girls on either shoulder," Macy giggles as we pass her in the hall. "You must be special if they're willing to share you, Zay."
"I get the head!" Olivia shouts, and I see her arms flail out in my peripheral vision -her probably having grabbed his head possessively. "It's mine."
"Sure," I say dryly. "I'm okay with not getting the only part of him that talks."
"Hey," Xavier says, now offended. "That's rude Carter, I happen to know you love the sound of my voice."
I roll my eyes, despite him not being able to see me. "Loving the sound, and loving the bull that is spouted out of your mouth are two separate things. You guys must go through a lot of toilet paper, because with you crap comes out of both ends."
At this Olivia breaks down giggling, her brother grumbles darkly under his breath as he walks into the living room, not bothering to come up with a counter insult.
"Oh, hey." Jessie says after Liv is set on her feet, having bounces straight to the person next to the movie collection. "Which one do you want?"
Xavier swings me down on the couch, making a small yelp leave my mouth.
With a smug look he purposely smothers me with his ass while moving over to his cushion on the two-seater. I glare at him, but let him pull me to his side anyway.
Jessamine only realizes I'm in the room when she turns around, having set up Tangled for Liv.
Her brown doe eyes practically burn me, but she looks happy none the less as she rushes both me and Xavier in a hug.
She has yet to explode over the fact that we're together.
Seeing as we were going to tell her at the game I was going to wear his jersey at.
But that's okay, because he one this Wednesday -but we'll have to tell her before that if we want our lives intact.
"I'm only not mad you didn't tell me because what you risked for them," She whisper yells about Xavier and Olivia. "And because I know I can't keep a secret for anything when it comes to someone like him." She points her chin at the guy behind me. "But if you don't unblock me I seriously will kill you."
I giggle nervously, nodding my head rapidly. "I will. Thanks Jessie, I owe you one. Now go," I shove her slightly. "Let us watch Tangled. Crazy lady."
She sits down with a small glare, but soon the screen takes her attention away.
Suddenly Liv springs onto me and Xavier, wedging her way between us before leaning over and pulling a blanket.
Me and my Wolf boy share a look before helping her cover us both with the blanket -Xavier pulls on my hip and tugs her closer to him, successfully getting us both comfortable on his lap as he hums in satisfaction.
I giggle as I look down to Liv, who looks so adorable all focused on the TV.
Xavier has the same look on his face, both of them chewing on their bottom lip and wiggling their left foot to stay active while watching the movie.
Jessamine and Calum are all cute curled up together, him looking at his girlfriend instead of the screen.
My heart warms at the sight.
He really is good for her.
Surprisingly the Angel meets my gaze before winking, his green eyes flickering back to his best friend.
I raise a eyebrow and turn towards the Devil, only to have him watching me with a actual smile.
"What?" I ask. "Why are you smiling?"
Xavier shakes his head, leaning over Liv to kiss my temple. "Nothing, it's just -Your eyes get me every time."
My mouth parts at this, surprised. "My eyes?"
He nods, quickly kissing both my eye lids before he leans back. "Yeah," His dimples make their appearance as his blue ones flicker between my own. "I think they're my favorite color."
"But they're grey." I whisper in protest, realizing Jessie will get mad if we don't quiet down.
"I know," The Devil says with a grin. "Does that matter? They're beautiful."
"You're insane." I giggle, but that doesn't stop my blush or the way my heart starts to pump faster.
"I think you don't look in the mirror enough Emma," Xavier randomly says. "If you did, I think you might fall in love with yourself."
"And be as vain as Julian?" I ask, smiling lazily at him. "How about no."
"You're such a mood killer." The Devil mumbles, pouting at how I didn't flirt back. "Such a tease."
I wink at him, giggling as his eyes narrow at me. "And don't you forget it."
He hums, turning back to the movie. "As long as you have that mark on your neck and I return the favor I won't."
My nose scrunches up when I realize that as long as we're together it's probably not going to be gone.
Then I start grumbling, realizing that's his entire point.
He's lucky I love him.
