Chapter 2

Noyouresamantha has connected.

DieDie: ok ya sure shane but the thing is that youre wrong and please stop being an idiot

Shaneeee: just because you hate being wrong doesnt mean you can plug your ears and pretend that youre right

DieDie: shut up

Sam had a feeling that she joined this conversation at just the wrong time. Still, her two best friends were constantly feuding even on the best of days, though it was generally all in good fun. There was no way to escape their constant bickering.

Diana might listen if she told her to please stop the nonsense, but ever since Sam had broken up with Shane, he hadn't been so quick to back out of arguments. Somehow, though, Sam would need to get them both to cut it out for at least a few minutes so she could ask them about the Counterparts Program.

Noyouresamantha: guys be quiet for a minute youre probably both wrong

Shaneeee: rude for one thing

DieDie: how could you say that sam i thought you loved me. im so betrayed

Noyouresamantha: oh be quiet. did either of you have a cop show up at your house earlier?

DieDie: damn it sam dont get arrested

Noyouresamantha: im not getting arrested. the guy gave me a slip of paper thats all and it says stuff about joining a thing called the counterparts program

Shaneeee: sounds like a cult

Noyouresamatha: no it doesnt youre just a jackass

DieDie: no one came to my house and asked me to join a cult

Noyouresamantha: its not a cult! look, how about you shane?

Shaneeee: nah

Sam rolled her eyes. So she was in this whole counterparts thing by herself. That would be fine, she supposed, as long as everything worked out. It would certainly be easier to navigate this whole thing if she knew someone else that was in it with her, though.

DieDie: wait but sam whats the program thing?

Shaneeee: is the letter in secret code?

Noyouresamantha: its just a letter. ill dm you guys a picture of it. one sec.

Noyouresamantha: attachment.file.SS188HYF4

Noyouresamantha: what do you think?

Shaneeee: dunno why they want you

DieDie: dont be mean shane, sam is great. youre great sam.

Noyouresamantha: gee thanks di

DieDie: love you. but are you going to that meeting thing then? gonna go be a mini-me from some1?

Noyouresamantha: ya i think so and i told my mom i would. might as well.

Shaneeee: how did they do all of that matching stuff? i want an older version of me! then you guys could see how cool ill be in ten years

DieDie: or you could finally realize what a loser youve always been. that would be an adventure for you

Noyouresamantha: guys stop it.

Noyouresamantha: i think they got the info to match me from some files that ought t be secret which is why im not super into this whole thing

Shaneeee: oh

DieDie: i wouldnt worry to much about it sam

Shaneeee: what are they from the shrink your mom keeps sending you to

DieDie: shane seriously dont be an asshat thats super rude. dont answer him sammy.

Sighing, Sam set the paper to the side and leaned back in her bed. Both Shane and Diana already knew that she had been going to the therapist for almost seven months-ever since she got back from her "wild days", as Shane obnoxiously referred to them as. That wasn't a secret from them.

Noyouresamantha: not its fine di dont worry about it (but you are n asshat shane). ya there from my therapist

Shaneeee: oh

DieDie: isnt there some sort of patient-doctor secrecy thing that goes on with that stuff? theres no way they got it like that?

Noyouresamantha: but i think they got it anyway somehow. idk theyre at the govt they can do what they want right? but nothing was in the letter to my mom so i dont care that much for now

Shaneeee: yeah well im sure you could totally kick someone's butt with a lawyer if they wrote anything proving that they knew something from your shrink

A box popped up in the corner of the webpage, drawing Sam's attention away from her conversation. It was a DM box, from Diana specifically to her. Must be something that she didn't want Shane to see. That was quite a large pool of things, given that Shane was a first class jerk.

Not to get Sam wrong, she was friends with the guy, and generally even got along with him. But that changed nothing. Shane could get an inanimate object to punch him in just a poorly phrased sentence. Sam opened the DM.

DieDie: when are you going to tell him about us?

Noyouresamantha: idk he would freak out

DieDie: yeah well i said that i would let you decide when to tell him because hes your ex but this is getting ridiculous

Noyouresamantha: yeah yeah okay fine if you want to tell him then go ahead

DieDie: okeydokey

Back at the group chat, Shane was acting like the puppy that Sam had when she was little when it was left alone. Typical.

Shaneeee: guys

Shaneeee: guys whered you go

Shaneeee: guys

Shaneeee: are you plotting against me? if so how dare you

DieDie: calm down shane holy crap youd think we trapped you in a dungeon

Shaneeee: were u plotting my assassination

DieDie: no i was writing a sonnet

Shaneeee: you cant write a sonnet because you cant rhyme

Noyouresamantha: its a sonnet about me

DieDie: roses are red, violets are blue, im dating sam

Shaneeee: what

Shaneeee: thats not a sonnet

Shaneeee: also what. also i think that violates some sort of code. im your friend you cant date friends exes

Noyouresamantha: i think i get to choose that

Shaneeee: uuuugh that means that you both owe me. heres how you make it up to me, just find me a gf

DieDie: go find your own

Shaneeee: wait but this isnt random. this is because of something i said that you told me. so the therapist knows youre dating di

Noyouresamantha: youre only smart when you want to be, huh shane? yeah she knows but i dont want my mom to know

Shaneeee: no fair she knew when you were dating me

DieDie: are you completely incompetent shane

Shaneeee: no! but why do you ask! i just mean that sam wasn't keeping us a secret so why is she keeping you guys? im asking for your sake di

Noyouresamantha: because i didnt care if she knew when i was dating you idiot

Shaneeee: but whats the difference between you and me and you and her

DieDie: gee, whats the diff between sam being in a completely straight relationship with you and her dating me shane

Shaneeee: oh. ok. fair enough

Sam rolled her eyes once more before looking up to check the time from the clock on her wall. Sure, there was a digital clock on her computer, but she had built a habit of checking the wall clock when she didn't have a computer and it stuck.

Seeing as it was almost seven, it would be time for her to log off and eat soon, as it would be for the others. They could meet up at the park or something on Sunday, and then hang out for a while. Shane would act all awkward, but he always acted a bit awkward so that was no big change. Diana would just glare at him until he stopped giving them weird looks.

Noyouresamantha: meet tomorrow at central?

Shaneeee: sure we can walk to the park and terrorize schoolkids

DieDie: no shane no terrorizing babies

Noyouresamantha: thats mean shane dont do that ever or di will hit you

Shaneeee: wheres the fun then?

DieDie: shut up. yeah sam well meet up tomorrow. ill be there by eight bc i have nothing to do all day

Noyouresamantha: same. see ya there.

Noyouresamantha has disconnected.

So the general consensus of Sam's closest seemed to be that the Counterparts Program was hardly interesting and not worth the time of talking much about. Well, Shane hadn't made any rude jokes about Diana and her yet so Sam considered the conversation a success.

Whether or not anyone else was going to be interested with her, Sam had already made her decision that she would be checking into this whole program thing. Sam didn't trust this whole thing as far as she could throw it, and she was also pretty sure that throwing lines of code isn't quite possible so overall she was wary. Interested, but wary. She would be patient and wait until the meeting with the directors of the program, and she would play along with their mentorship thing.

But she wanted to know how much they knew about her, for the sake of curiosity if nothing else. There were some things besides her thing with Diana that she didn't want to get tossed around or shown to her mom. Apart from Shane and Diana, no one at school even knew about what had happened over the past year beside the fact that Sam was out of school "sick" a lot.

"Samantha, dinner is in just a few minutes! Come clean the table!" Mom didn't sound angry, just busy. She was probably running around getting everything ready.

With no one to shove her chores off onto, Sam rolled off of her bed and headed out to clear off the kitchen table. She caught her nails on the doorframe as she turned, her skirt flipping around her legs as she headed out of her room. She personally liked it in her room more than any other room of the house, as everything there was hers and it was picked to her choosing. She supposed that's why everyone likes their own room. It's like you, but a place where you can live.

For the moment, though, she needed to leave. It was time to take a break from being high-school-best-friend Sam to go back to the reasonably more stressful ex-juvie-kid Sam. She would fix all this soon, though. She definitely would.
