First: You'll see the word "Lyrin" from time to time, that's the species the characters are. Sort of like a cross between a deer and wolf.

Backstory:

Jardune is a land surrounded by WorldsEnd, an infinite gorge impossible to cross. Jardune was once a city that prospered, but it was getting too crowded and at first bad solutions to the overpopulation were made. Finally, a team of scientists figured out how to travel to the floating island above, and a city was built. The city was called Kiadail, meaning New Home in an ancient language. Lots of people, especially richer ones, moved to Kiadail. Both cities were in harmony at first, and the air tunnels that let people travel between islands were open and operating. But after a while, poisons and chemicals leaked out from Kiadial's ground, and rained into Jardune. Kiad scientists believed all Jards were infected and unhealthy, and so the air shafts were blocked off. No one could travel between cities, and after decades, Jardune became more of a legend in Kiadail. Kiads believed that Jardune was no longer inhabitable. However, in the dark city below, scattered members of Jardune still lived, numb to the fire and the toxins. They learned slowly how to live without help from above. Some resented the Kiads for leaving them.

Glossary:

Upper City / Kiadail: A city in the clouds; warm air currents keep it in the sky. "KYE uh dale"

Lower City / Jardune: The town below Kiadail. "jar DOON"

WorldsEnd: A bottomless gorge surrounding the Lower City, very wide and impossible to cross.
