Chapter 32- Caleb

"What are you doing here, Cain?" I exclaimed. He rolled his eyes and grabbed me and Tess by the arm. He shimmered and suddenly we were all invisible. I turned back to Cain who started mouthing something.

"I think he's saying that Nick sent him to find us," Tess said.

"How on earth did you get past the shield?" I asked. He mouthed something again.

"OK," Tess said. "I am not repeating all of that. You know, its not nice to call Caleb that, Cain."

"Call me what?" I asked.

"You don't want to know," Tess said. "Basically he waited for the guards who took us to call in for them to deactivate the shield so they could get in. He got in after them."

"Cain, you know what we have to do, don't you," I said. "And you can't stop us. This is the only way." Cain huffed and nodded. His expression seemed to say 'I know'.

"Will you help us?" Tess asked. His eye shifted to her. There was something that glimmered that showed some emotion, that he cared. Looking into Tess's big, round, beautiful emerald green eyes, I can see why. She was pleading in such a way that I don't think even my uncle, Frost could refuse her. Cain slowly nodded just as shouting started from behind us. Frost and a dozen more guards came flying round the corner. I braced myself but then I remembered that we were invisible. They sprinted past us. My uncle ran into the tent but came out again within two seconds, his face bright red with anger. He kicked the nearest unconscious guard in the stomach. "Find them!" He yelled. "Find them now! I want them alive! Get me Dr Brand!" They all ran off in panic with Frost screaming behind them.

"We need to get to the shield generator," I whispered. "Cain, do you know where it is?" He nodded. Cain pulled us around in front of him and marched us through the tents.

The base was absolutely massive and everything had a golden glow to it from the shield. Cain was leading us the the shield generator when suddenly Tess gasped and collapsed to the ground. Cain lost hold of her and me and I tried to catch her. I managed to stop her from hitting her head on the ground. She was shaking all over, her eyes squeezed shut. "Tess!" I cried. "Tess what is it?"

"It's...it's...Edward," she stammered. "He's talking...to me in my...head."

"Concentrate Tess!" I said. "If its important we need to know what he's trying to say." She squeezed her eyes shut again and breathed hard. She suddnely gasped and jumped up from my arms.

"We've got to hurry," she said. "Edward said that he and the Commander have a plan. They have called a meeting with Frost so they can distract him while we are down the shield. Once we do that, the Commander can send in all her troops. We can end this war today!"

"But Frost knows we're missing. He'll just say no and focus on getting us," I said.

"No, he won't. I'm sure of it," Tess said. "Just trust us, Caleb."

"Of course I trust you," I said. She threw her arms around me and kissed me on the cheek. I could feel the heat radiating from my face as a blush. "Come on," I said. "Let's finish this war." Cain rolled his eyes and make a gagging gesture which I only stuck my tongue out at. He turned invisible again and lightly touched me and Tess on the shoulder. He guided us through the camp again.

We could end is war. Today. A couple of days ago I wouldn't have believed it. Just think, soon we would all be free from the government. We could explain to the world what really happened and that it wasn't our fault. I know it sounds a bit crazy, but maybe, just maybe, Tess and I could have a future together. Maybe I was a bit young to think about that but hey, I didn't know if I was going to live or die today so I was nice to have some sort of plan.

Cain coughed, breaking me from my trail of thoughts. I looked up to see the shield generator. It was a massive great machine, silver and glittering in the light. There were gears slowly turning and creaking and right in the centre, a beam of golden light shot up. That must supply the shield.

"We need to find the power source!" I yelled over the noise the machine was making. "That way I can drain the light and destroy it!" Cain let go of us so we could search. Just as I started forward, a shout went up. I turned to see a group of six guards running towards us. Tess cursed. "Caleb, you find the source, Cain and I will deal with these guys," she said. Before I could protest, she ran towards them, blasting fire columns out of her hands. Cain had turned invisible and was reeking havoc on the guards, smashing their heads together and punching them hard.

I turned back to he generator. I have to find the source. It was the only way. I scrambled around the machine, looking for an opening. Finally I found one. There was a tube, about a thick as my arm, with a golden liquid inside. I had no idea how the government got Edward's power in there but I couldn't worry about that now.

I heard a scream and jerked up, fearing it was Tess. It was but not because she was hurt, because she was angry. I watched as she shot a fire ball at a guard who just managed to duck. The fire just singed his hair.

I turned back to the pipe. I could not afford to get distracted. Placing my hands on the pipe, I summoned all he energy I could muster. The tube started glowing even brighter as the golden light filled my palms. I could already feel myself tiring. My knees buckled but I still managed to keep going. The tube was now half empty. I looked up. The shield was already starting to flicker but I couldn't hold on for much longer. This was the most challenging thing I have ever done with my powers. I couldn't do it. I just couldn't.

"Come on, Caleb!" Tess shouted. She was kneeling next to me after seeing that I was struggling. Cain was handling the last two guards. I looked into Tess's eyes but I couldn't say anything. "I believe in you, Caleb! You can do it. Do it for all those children who are waiting for their parents to come home. Do it for your mother and Nick and Edward. Do it for me, Caleb!" Her voice filled me with new energy. She believed in me. I could do this. With one last push, I screamed in defiance. The glass in the tube smashed and all the light rushed to my palms. The noise of the machine stopped and creaked. I fell backwards into Tess's arms, completely drained. My eyes flickered from her beautiful face to the sky above me. It was no longer gold.

The shield was gone.
