Chapter 24
Many Years Later......
~2016~
I was packing to get ready to go to Miss Avocet for the week so she can test me on the ymbryne skills. I am due to leave the day after tomorrow's morning. As I am only already eighty something and there is less than two decades until I am to make my own loop and leave, she decided that she should, once again, test me. Just as I stuffed the last of my things in, I heard a knock on the door. Without even turning around, I knew who it was,
"Hello Miss Peregrine," I said, zipping up the suitcase,
"Miss Raven, now I understand that you're leaving tomorrow at noon, but can you do me a favour?" She asked, walking in,
I turned around to face her, "Sure, anything,"
"This morning, Abe's grandson, you remember him, Jacob Portman, had arrived here on the other side on the loop, in present day Cairnholm. And I need you to get him here into the loop,"
"Sure, why not," I shrugged, it'd be interesting to finally meet him and so I started heading out the door, "I'll go right away,"
"Wait, one more thing," Miss Peregrine said, placing a hand on my shoulder, stopping me, "Try not to tell him about Peculiars just yet, I don't want to accidentally scare him away before I get a chance to formally meet him,"
"Okay!" I said, going into the hallway, and stopping at an open window, I transformed into my bird form and flew out into the open air.
With the wind beneath my wings, I flew over the 1940s Cairnholm over small houses, quaint little bakeries, and small shops. Swooping in and out of the cave which doubles as our loop entrance and into the present day Cairnholm. Almost immediately as I flew through, I noticed the small, mist covered town that is nothing like the cheerful green Cairnholm in 1940. I spotted Jacob, who seem definitely way older than the photos I've received from Abe. He was at a table along with a tall figure in the Priest Hole.
I made sure no one was looking, then I returned to my human form and walked into the bar undetected and sat down at a small round table on a short wooden stool in the darkest corner. Observing them, note observing not spying, because observing and spying are two very different things.
I overheard Jacob asked.... Franky? He's here too? Anyways, he asked if he could go look for the house, wait, the house? Do he mean our house, tin 1940. And Franky was saying something about how he has to go with someone.
I smiled, then walked towards them, emerging from the shadows, "Maybe I can be of assistance," I saw Franky paling drastically, "Hello, my name is Aria, Aria Raven," I held out a hand for him to shake.
"D-Do I know you?" Franky stammered, obviously confused,
"Maybe," I said ominously, "But I definitely know you, Franky,"
"How?"
"Magic," I said mysteriously, then turned to Jacob, "So anyways, let me show you where the old house is,"
"Um," he said uncomfortably, "Okay?"
So I started to lead him to the house when Jacob asked me something,
"So how do you know my dad?"
I smiled, "Abe told me, just like how he told me a lot of things about you, for example, you are born on Halloween, you hate scary movies, and also how you used to believe Abe's stories, why did you stop believing,"
He ignored my question, "You knew my grandfather?"
I smiled, "He was one of my dearest friends,"
"Wait, really? Wait how? He is way older than you- you know what, it don't matter!" He said excitedly, "What was he like back then,"
"He, well, he was brave and nice," I started, "He was determined and he fought so bravely in the war" I meant the peculiar war against the hollows and the wights. But he'd think I meant world war two.
Jacob smiled then laughed, "Did you know that he that he said that in the war he fought 'monsters'," He said, putting quotation marks around 'monsters',
"Well, he wasn't wrong,"
Jacob was about to ask another question when we came in view of the house, his jaws dropped, and I cringed, the house was completely ruined. I knew that it would be destroyed, but I had never thought that it would be this bad. I guess years of rain and cold really took a toll on it, oh! And the bomb too of course.
"So," He said, clearly disappointed, "This is it?"
"Well, no, not rea-" I started, but got cut off by Jacob,
"You know what, nevermind, I'm sorry for wasting your time. I um, I got to go," he started to leave,
"Wait! No, I need to-"
"No, it's okay, bye," He said, jogging off,
"W- Wait what?" I fumbled, trying to comprehend what just happened, "Wait! No, Jacob, wait!"
But by then, Jacob was already too far away to hear what I was saying, either that or he don't want to hear me and is purposely blocking me out. I sighed and shrugged. Oh well, I'll try again tomorrow.
~The Next Day~
"So how long will you be gone?" Millard asked, lying down in the shade of the tree beside me.
"Just a week or two," I replied, sitting there, my legs crossed, in my hands held a pencil and sketchbook. "Don't worry, I'll be back before you know-"
"Aria! Millard!" Hugh ran towards us, "There- ja- wait, give me a second." He doubled over, out of breath,
"Hugh? What are you doing here?" Millard asked,
"Yeah," I said, "Weren't you and the others playing football?"
"Y-Yeah, but you do not know what I just saw! It's Abe's grandson, I just saw him in the house!" Hugh exclaimed,
"What!" I jumped up to my feet, heading towards the house.
So here is the first chapter in part two and I'm sorry that it took this long to post, there was a problem on my laptop. But anyways, I think you can probably see what is going to happen if you remember what happened to Miss Avocet. Well, I don't want reveal too much.
Stay Peculiar!
XOXO, Victoria
