45. Sweet morning
Olivia
My eyes opened to Logan playing with a strand of my hair as he smoothed it in a calming way. "Good morning," I mumbled with a yawn escaping me.
"Good morning, baby," Logan leaned forward and planted a kiss on my lips that lasted barely two seconds. My head rested on his bare chest. I felt my cheeks heat up. Getting a kiss in the early morning surely sent butterflies fluttering in my stomach, especially after the way Logan and I had spent the night. It wasn't like we had sex. Logan had said he didn't want to hurt the baby. Even though I assured him that having a single round of sex wouldn't harm the baby in any way, he didn't listen and instead held me close in his warmth, and that was how we slept.
"How long have you been up?" I asked as I looked at him. His hand was still playing with my hair, and I found it to be a soothing remedy for my exhausted self.
"Not long ago. I couldn't resist admiring a beauty," he said, making me raise an eyebrow.
"What beauty?"
"Your beauty, of course. Your eyes are tempting me." I don't know if it was his words or the tone he used, but I snuggled closer to his body, and his scent instantly enveloped my senses – a familiar scent I had come to crave, and a body I wanted to be close to.
"I like the smell of your body," I confessed, hugging him tightly. Logan chuckled in response, wrapping his strong arms around me, creating a protective shield.
"Is that supposed to be a compliment?" he teased. I hummed in return, closing my eyes to relish the moment. I didn't want it to end. Nothing else mattered to me in that moment but being wrapped in Logan's embrace. We remained in that position, the sounds of our heartbeats synchronizing.
Until I broke the silence with a thought that crossed my mind. I had been wanting to ask Logan for a while. Since we were alone and not preoccupied, maybe it was the perfect opportunity to bring it up. "Logan?" I called.
"Yes, baby girl." How could a man be so sweet and perfect at the same time? I know 'baby' is an outdated nickname, but I couldn't help my heart fluttering at the way he called me that.
"What was your mother like?" I asked, and his hand that had been gently rubbing circles on my back came to a sudden stop. I lifted my face to look at him. The cheesy smile I had seen on his face a few minutes ago was now absent. Did I touch on a sensitive topic?
"I realized that we don't really know much about each other."
What I didn't expect happened. Logan withdrew his hand from my body and proceeded to get out of bed. "We should go take a shower," he said, brushing off the topic as if he didn't want to discuss anything related to his family or his mother.
"Did I ask a sensitive question?" I inquired as he walked up to the wardrobe. His back was turned to me. I pulled the duvet over my naked body and moved toward him. I gently turned him to face me. "Why do I feel like you're angry, Logan?"
"I'm not," he said, offering me a smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. No one could convince me otherwise – there was something deeper, something he was hiding inside.
"Yes, you are," I responded with a deadpan tone.
"Are you trying to pick a fight, Olivia?" he asked, avoiding my gaze once more.
But I wasn't going to back down. I cupped his face and made him look at me. "You're the one trying to pick a fight, Logan. I simply asked you a question, something I believe is okay for us to talk about. We still have a lot to learn about each other," I explained, my heart swirling with emotions.
Logan continued to avoid my gaze. I stepped closer until there was barely an inch of space left between us. I rested my hand on his bare chest, just below his heart. I could feel the rhythm of his beating heart through my palm. "Why won't you let me in, Logan?" I husked out.
"I know you're hiding something. Your reaction and the expression on your face say it all," I pressed on.
He remained silent. I released a deep breath. "Logan?" I called again.
"I'm your wife. Don't you think I deserve the right to know the person my husband is? His likes, dislikes, his hobbies, dreams..." My words trailed off as I took another sharp breath.
"You'll learn that with time. We still have a lot of time ahead of us," he finally spoke. I had to blink twice to process his words. It wasn't the answer I expected. I realized I had placed too much hope on breaking into his heart. Something was holding him back, preventing him from opening up. But I wasn't going to give up until I saw what lay beneath his guarded heart.
"Alright then. Since you say so, we'll wait for the right time. Go ahead and take your shower," I said, turning to leave. Maybe now wasn't the ideal time to engage in a heated conversation. I had barely taken two steps when Logan pulled me back.
His brows furrowed. I wondered if he knew that I could see right through him. "Where are you going?" he asked, his tone lowered.
"To my room, of course," I replied. Suddenly, the corner of his lips curved up. He pulled me into his embrace without warning.
"Is my wife playing hard to get?"
"What do you mean? Who was the one giving me the cold shoulder just because I asked about his mother?" I retorted, regretting it almost immediately as his solemn expression returned. He quickly masked it with a smile, brushing a strand of hair away from my face.
"I'm sorry for reacting that way. I just..." I interrupted his explanation with a kiss on his cheek, catching him off guard. His eyes widened slightly before that familiar smile, or rather smirk, spread across his face once more.
"It seems like you're asking for trouble. Don't forget that you're naked under this duvet. It wouldn't be difficult to peel it off and have you right here," he warned, his eyes trailing over my body as if I were already undressed.
I grinned in response. "I wouldn't mind that. After all, I did want to us to have sex last night," I remarked. His eyes squinted at my words.
"Are you suggesting we put our baby's safety at risk?" he questioned, the mention of 'our baby' causing my heart to flutter.
"I don't think that would happen if we're careful and take things slowly," I countered.
"Slowly, huh? But I don't think I have the patience for that with you," he replied, his words catching me off guard, but soon replaced with an amused smile.
"Well, I didn't know Logan Nero was a bit naughty," I teased.
"I won't deny that. I want to be naughty with you," he said, inching closer. I gripped his arm tightly, closing my eyes in anticipation of his kiss.
Just then, a sound resonated through the room – a sound that came from my stomach. "Seems like someone's hungry," Logan said, pulling away with a sly grin. He started heading towards the bathroom.
"Hold on right there!" I exclaimed, following him. Wrapped in the oversized duvet, I nearly tripped. Thankfully, Logan swiftly caught me.
"See what I mean?" he sighed, a hint of annoyance on his face.
"And who was the one teasing me earlier?" I fired back, pushing my lips out in a pout.
Logan's gaze lingered on me, as if considering what to do next. What he did surprised me – he discarded the duvet and scooped me up in his arms. "This should be better," he declared, using his foot to kick open the bathroom door. I wrapped my arms around his neck, an excited grin on my face.
A smile remained on my face as I descended the stairs. Logan had thoroughly teased me during our shower, and we ended up spending more time than usual under the water – probably playing around and touching each other's bodies. I hoped that Logan and I could continue being so comfortable around each other. Despite his reaction to my mentioning his mother, I was certain that with time, he would open up to me.
Heading to the kitchen, I intended to prepare breakfast for the family. I hadn't been in the kitchen for a few days, bypassing the traditions. To my surprise, I found Amelia in the kitchen. "Good morning," she greeted, slipping on an apron.
I couldn't help but display my surprise at her casual tone and her presence in the kitchen at this early hour. Amelia normally leave the house earlier than everyone else due to her hospital schedule. "Why do you look as if you've seen a ghost?" she quipped, her gaze assessing me.
"Good morning. I'm just surprised to see you in the kitchen at this hour. I was actually planning to make breakfast for the family today," I informed her of my intentions.
"Well, it seems we'll be working together then. We've been a bit lax with our routines lately. Plus, I've taken a day off work," she explained.
"Why? Won't it affect—"
"No. There are other doctors. I'm not the only doctor at the hospital. I just wanted to cut myself some slack and spend some time with my family," she mentioned which piqued my curiosity. Had the little stunt Logan and I pulled the other night yielded any results?
I nodded, even though Amelia's back was turned as she stood in front of the refrigerator. "Alright, let's get to work then. What should we prepare?" I asked moving towards her to assess the contents of the fridge together.
"What are you ladies plotting without me?" Sarah's voice piped up from the doorway, causing us both to look in her direction. Her gaze shifted from Amelia to me, her eyebrows raised, and I couldn't miss the playful grin on her face.
"Amelia and I are planning to make breakfast for the family today. Are you—"
"Count me in," Sarah interrupted before I could even finish my sentence. I couldn't help the smile that curved my lips at this newfound connection towards me. Perhaps things were finally starting to fall into place. With that thought, I reached for the apron Amelia handed me, as well as one for Sarah.
