THE TRAGEDY OF MASON ALVAREZ WAS OF HIS OWN MAKING.

He lost his job, his home, his son and it was all his fault. He shouldn't have allowed himself to fall so low. He shouldn't have resorted to breaking into the evidence locker and stealing an escape. But Mason was lost and in his darkest moment, he saw drugs as the way out. He should've been stronger. But he wasn't and he lost everything.

The woman who he loved and had a child with left him, leaving him a single parent, but not before yelling out that she never loved Mason in the first place. Struggling, overwhelmed at home and at work, Officer Mason Alvarez broke the law he worked so long to uphold. His indulgences with illegal substances did not last long for he was quickly caught by his fellow cops and judgement was passed.

For his crimes, Mason lost custody of his baby boy, he was sent to rehab before serving two years probation. It was his fault for allowing himself to go down that road. Everything that had happened was because of him. His entire world was gone. Even though his parents managed to gain custody of little Roman, Mason couldn't see him without supervision. His own child. 

It was Roman who made him want to do better. Roman made him want to have a better life. And so Mason enrolled himself into Greendale Community College. He didn't know what he wanted to do. He just wanted to do better.

And so Mason Alvarez won't let anything stop him from changing his life for the better. Not even an incredibly handsome narcissist by the name of Jeff Winger.

- So, Mason used to be a cop! So, all those instincts are still there but he fucked up.

- Pierce was right about one thing: Jeff likes guys too. Jeff is a closeted bi in DEEP DENIAL. 

- After the mother of his son ran off, Mason struggled. He was overwhelmed, in pain and with a new baby, he didn't know what to do. He turned to using drugs in the evidence locker. And was caught

- Being caught meant he was sent to rehab, his badge was taken away, his son taken from his custody but fortunately into his parents'. 

- Upon leaving rehab, Mason wanted to have a fresh start and do right by his son so he went to Greendale to get a degree to do something new. He isn't sure when he arrives. Deciding his career is an important theme. You can choose but it would be cool if it was helping recovering addicts, maybe starting his own facility. Or a PI

- His son was six months when he was arrested. So, now he's older when Mason joins Greendale. His son's name is Roman. 

- Mason knows he's pansexual and he develops a crush on Jeff even though he thinks he's arrogant. 

- Jeff isn't a big fan of kids but he's ok with Roman. Still isn't clingy with him but he tolerates him.

- Jeff falling in love with Mason without realising it until it hits him like a train.

- Mason has a parole officer for about two seasons and the supervised visits of his kid go away after a year. But he continues to go to support meetings.

- They start with hooking up in secret and they don't tell ANYONE about them. Abed probably catches them in the bathroom making out and doesn't tell anyone. It's probably Annie who discovers them and reveals it to everyone. 

- Their relationship develops but it takes a while before either are ready for an actual relationship.
