Tunnels
Tunnels
"Come," the man said, beckoning as he rose and opened the door. I hesitated for a moment before getting up to follow him, shrugging.
I really don't have anything to lose.
The two others (guards I presume) walked close behind me, shutting the door and staring straight ahead. I glanced at the few people passing, and they all looked away quickly when their eyes met mine. I turned back to the front, looking down the dim hallway.
Where are we going?
As if reading my mind, he said, "We're headed to the tunnels. They're what allows us to travel unseen inside the city."
"And this is important why?" I asked.
"Because you're going to help us find your brother, and you need to know where to get your information," the man said.
"Okay," I said, drawing out the last syllable.
The man said nothing, just kept walking. Eventually we reached the end of the hallway, where a large metal hatch with a wheel on it resided. The man opened the hatch, leading me inside. I looked back, and the two others stayed in the hallway, closing the door behind us.
"These are the tunnels. Try to avoid touching the walls."
I looked at the wall, and staring back at me was a snake. Hundreds of snakes to be more accurate. They writhed around, completely covering the walls and hissing, threatening to bite anyone who dared touch them. After some time we reached a ladder. The man started to climb and I looked up, but the darkness didn't allow me to see what was beyond him.
I started climbing, careful not to look down as the ground receded slowly from my grasp. When I reached the top an unfamiliar hand reached down, offering assistance. I shrugged it off, pulling myself up onto the floor. The man slid a cover back over the hole before turning back to me.
"This is your information person," he said, gesturing to the owner of the hand. "He's called Ramses."
I nodded, reaching out my hand on impulse. He shook it, smiling. "Hello, Ailie."
I stepped back, retracting my hand with a raised eyebrow. "How do you know who I am?"
The smile never left his face. "I'm the camera man."
I finally took in my surroundings and noticed that all the walls were covered in photographs of people, and I identified a cluster of me, and of each member of my family, even Quain before he was gone.
"Where did you get all these?" I asked, stepping closer to the wall.
"The cameras, they're almost everywhere," Ramses said.
"Yeah, but why?" I questioned, running my fingers across the edge of a picture that I remember well.
Ramses shrugged. "To keep my job with the government."
I spun around. "You work for the government?!" I hissed.
He nodded. "But not the way you think. I work for them so I can have access to private and restricted files, and know people's whereabouts."
"Okay," I said slowly. "But what does this have to do with Quain?"
"Ramses is going to help you find Quain," the man informed me. Ramses nodded in agreement.
The hatch rattled. I turned my head slowly. After some effort from whoever was on the ladder below, the cover slid to the side. Then a familiar head popped out, asking in a feminine voice, "Ailie?"
