twenty four
Robin knocked on the open door carefully so that he wouldn't startle her. Carter's smile was bright as her eyes met his in the mirror, but he knew that it wouldn't compare to the one she wore when she walked down the aisle and saw Harry.
"Almost ready?"
Carter ran her hands over the beautiful silk of her dress, her eyes following her hands, "No. I feel like I'm going to go into cardiac arrest and it hasn't even started yet. But, I am more than ready to spend the rest of my life with your son. Does that make sense?"
Robin laughed lightly as she turned around and offered him her arm, "Perfect sense. When I married Anne, I was so afraid that I almost ran out of the building. I wasn't afraid to be married to her, I was just afraid of what I was feeling like because my heart was going crazy and I could hardly breathe. Tell you what though, as soon as she walked through the door, all of that went away and all I felt was the immense love that I have for that beautiful woman."
The sound of light chatter filled her ears as they walked down the hall and the butterflies fluttered in her stomach. In only a few more moments, she would be on display and on her way to to start a new chapter with the man that kept her heart beating.
Her mind was focused on Harry long before the doors even opened, her heart beating at a thousand miles an hour and her lungs pushing themselves to breathe as if they had forgotten.
Robin smiled at her after he'd given the cue for the music to start, "You ready?"
Carter nodded, her teeth sinking into her bottom lip and her cheeks flushing naturally. The second that the massive doors swung open and Carter saw Harry standing at the end of the aisle, she completely understood what Robin had meant when he said everything but love went away.
She'd seen him smile a thousand times, but nothing compared to the smile that he wore when his eyes met hers from across the room and nothing compared to the way that she felt in that moment.
There were no words to describe it, but it was one of the best feelings in the world and she knew that she would hold onto it for the rest of her life. Even though they were supposed to be listening to the priest, Harry and Carter were far too absorbed in one another to pay attention to anything else.
Their vows were beautiful, but the ones behind their eyes said everything that words could never express properly. Harry had hardly waited for the priest to finish the typical "you may now kiss the bride", his arms pulling her close and his lips pressing against hers at the word "kiss".
Carter could hardly tell where she ended and he began and she didn't want to. Her head was spinning and her heart was doing somersaults. She never wanted his kiss to end.
But, it had to and it did after they ran out of oxygen. It didn't matter though because they would remember that kiss every day for the rest of their lives.
. . .
All the attention was almost overwhelming, but Carter didn't mind it at all. After years of ups and downs, she was finally Harry's wife. Carter felt like she was on top of the world and nothing could bring her down.
Harry's friend's band took the stage and introduced themselves briefly before calling the newlyweds out and into the middle of the dance floor for their first dance as a married couple.
Harry pulled Carter along with a smile that encompassed all of his features. He was still overwhelmingly happy to be married to Carter, but there was also an added excitement because he'd been planning a surprise for their first dance since he'd first known that he was going to ask her to marry him.
One of his friends, Carter thought that his name might have been Devon, quickly ran down to meet them and attached a mic to Harry's cheek. Carter had a good idea about where things were going, but she didn't know what Harry was going to sing.
Harry didn't like to sing in public, he didn't think that he sounded good at all, but Carter was in love with his voice. More often than not, she asked him to sing to her because, to him, he sounded like an angel.
So, as a surprise, he'd been meeting up with his best friend Carson for months to write her a song. He wasn't very good with instruments, but the words came easily and Carson and his band filled in the musical part of the song for him.
Carter bit her lip as she looked at him, Carson was back on stage and speaking again, "Before we get into the other stuff, this is a special song for the bride written by her husband. This one's for you, Carter."
Gentle chords filled the room. Harry's hands moved to her waist and Carter's were around his neck. Harry started to sing moments later, his voice heavenly and smooth as he sang the words to a song that no one else knew.
"If I could fly, I'd be coming right back home to you. I think I might, give up everything just ask me to. Pay attention, I hope that you listen, 'cause I let me guard down. Right now I'm completely defenseless..."
Harry held her as close as possible as they danced, his beautiful green eyes never leaving her captivating blue ones, "For your eyes only, I show you my heart. For when you're lonely, and forget who you are. I'm missing half of me, when we're apart. Now you know me, for your eyes only."
Tears raced down Carter's cheeks. She'd known he was a sweetheart from the start, but this was the sweetest thing that he could ever do and it completely melted her heart. The words were so beautiful that she hardly focused on the background at all, Harry's voice was the sweetest drug anyone could ever take and she was drowning in it.
Carter rested her head against his shoulder and closed her eyes as they danced. She let the music and Harry take her to a beautiful place and she could never express to him with words how much this meant to her.
The music swelled with the beat of her heart, it was almost over, she knew, but she wouldn't ever forget the words that Harry sang to her. He'd poured his heart into a song and unveiled it at their wedding for everyone to see and she was overwhelmed with how beautiful it was.
She hummed the chorus with him the final two times, her eyes meeting his and their hearts in complete harmony. Their foreheads were pressed together and their smiles lit up the room, "For your eyes only."
The song ended and the room erupted in applause, but neither of them noticed the sound because Harry had closed the space between them and kissed her soul.
When he pulled away, he shut the mic off and pulled it from his cheek, "I am yours and only yours."
. . .
Carter giggled as Harry carefully dropped her on the plush mattress and climbed on top of her. Harry had refused to take the elevator and practically ran up the stairs to get to their room. When he'd kicked open the last door, he scared a teenager who was roaming the halls and she screamed and ran the other way.
"You know, it would have been much easier to take the elevator, would have taken much less time too."
Harry playfully rolled his eyes, his lips softly caressing Carter's moments later. Carter smiled and lifted her hands to his neck, her fingers tangling in his soft curls. It was clear that he wanted to push the talking aside and get straight to business.
Gradually he deepened the kiss, his hands roaming to the back of her dress and pulling down the zipper with ease. Carter lifted her back to help him remove the fabric completely. Harry moved one of his hands to her thigh, the other one still behind her back and holding her close to him.
Carter fumbled with the buttons of his shirt for a moment before she decided to just rip it open. Harry laughed at the action and she laughed with him as he discarded his ruined shirt. His pants were next, but she handled those without much trouble.
Down to just their underwear, Carter expected things to heat up rapidly. She was surprised when Harry's lips left hers and his hands caressed every curve of her body.
His green eyes were filled with love as he looked down at her, a sparkling smile adorning his lips.
"How did I ever get so lucky?"
Carter smiled in return, her heart raging a war in her chest, "I ask myself that every day."
Harry closed the distance between them and stole her breath away. Carter's hands were on his chest and she could feel his heartbeat beneath her fingertips.
Harry's lips left hers only so that he could speak in a near whisper with his hand on her cheek, "My beautiful wife."
Carter smiled and Harry closed the distance again, his hands running along her skin and leaving goosebumps in their wake and their lips moving in a blissful harmony.
It wasn't much longer before the rest of their clothes were cast aside and Harry began mapping her skin with his lips, pressing gentle kisses everywhere and leaving occasional love bites where he pleased.
His hands spread her legs and Carter gasped when his lips met with her center. Harry hummed in return and began his pleasure filled assault. Carter's hands wound in his hair, she lifted her hips, but Harry held them down.
Soft whines turned into gentle moans that were accompanied by profanities and his name. Harry had her coming undone beneath him a while later, her hands harshly pulling at his hair and her thighs shaking as familiar pleasure spread throughout her body.
Harry wore a satisfied smile as he sat up and licked his lips, "Been a while, yeah?"
Carter was still trying to catch her breath and nodded quickly, "Definitely."
Harry was about to leave the bed to get a condom, since Carter wanted to be extra careful after the last incident, but Carter sat up and grabbed his wrist.
He looked down at where her hand rested before looking back to her with a raised eyebrow. Carter shook her head and smiled softly, "You don't need those anymore."
After talking with Anne, Carter decided to suck it up and keep trying because she wanted a baby of her own, one that looked remarkably like Harry with her features mixed in. Carter hadn't told him until then because she thought that it would be a nice little wedding gift to him.
Harry didn't register the entire connection, he figured that she was still on birth control, and found himself asking, "Are you sure?"
Carter pulled him back down to the bed and kissed him hard, "Positive."
