twenty eight
Carter smiled down at her stomach as the car rolled to a stop at a red light. The sky was dark and heavy rain drops fell in sheets, but she didn't mind because everything felt wonderful when she was with the man sitting beside her and the two little children that made her stomach poke out.
"Do you think that they'll actually join us today?" Months before, Carter was worrying about losing their children early like the others, but now she was worried about having to go into an emergency C section. She wasn't a big fan of surgery and just the thought of it made her anxious.
Harry tore his eyes away from the red light that blared against the stormy sky only to look at her with a gentle smile, "I hope so, all of this extra waiting is making both of us super antsy. It's still hard to believe that it's real. I mean, we have Poppy and she's beyond wonderful, and now we're about to have two sweet little babies...it feels like this all started only days ago and I don't want it to stop, but at the same time I want it to slow down."
Carter smiled and took Harry's hand that was resting by his side so that they were holding hands on the center console, "It's going to feel that way forever, you know. But, I think that we're ready. Oh, and the light is green."
Harry laughed at his carelessness, his dimples deep in his cheeks and his smile sending Carter's heart into a frenzy, "Right, I should definitely pay more attention to that considering that there are babies on board."
Carter laughed lightly and turned her head to look at the city passing by just outside her window. She was a city girl, she always had been and always would be because of her profession, and somehow the view was never boring in her eyes. Carter loved to see the people walking down the sidewalk and the view the sunlight provided when it's rays reflected off of pristine glass buildings. She loved the skyline and the sunset as it cast beautiful colors over every building and she absolutely adored the glow of the city lights against the stark blackness of the night.
Cater loved many places, but the city was where she belonged. Most parents don't want to raise their kids in populated cities because most of the bad in the world seems to thrive there, but Carter and Harry weren't worried because they knew that, no matter where they went, there would still be bad in the world and they couldn't hide their kids from it; it would be something that they had to experience and learn from.
Poppy was doing wonderful in the city, and that only solidified their decision to remain where they were. Their careers were hectic, but they decided that family mattered more and that, if it came down to it, they would choose their children over anything else.
The car rolled to a gentle stop and Harry squeezed Carter's hand lightly, he'd been talking to her for the past five minutes only to realize that she wasn't listening to him at all because she was absorbed in her thoughts and in the city around her.
"Sweetheart, we're here."
A faint blush rose to her cheeks as she removed her eyes from the city behind the glass to the man sitting beside her with such beautiful green eyes, "I'm sorry, I got caught up in my thoughts again. Are you sure that you're okay doing this? Things didn't go too well the last time we were all in one room."
She had asked him the question on and off again since his mother had proposed the idea of a 'family lunch date'. Harry knew that she was only asking so much to make sure that there wouldn't be a repeat of what had happened the last time; but his brother had changed and he knew it even though they hardly maintained any contact.
Harry was ready to reconcile with Sam and to be a united family again and this was the perfect opportunity for him to do so.
Carter was looking at him curiously and he smiled in return, "Yes, he's different now. Mum wouldn't have suggested it if it looked like history would repeat itself, you know that. Are you alright with this?"
He had asked the question a few scattered times since they had made plans for lunch, but he needed another confirmation because he didn't want to put her in a situation where she was uncomfortable.
Carter returned his smile, "Yeah, if you believe that this is right, then I am one hundred percent with you."
Harry lifted their linked hands to his mouth and kissed the top of hers sweetly, "I can never tell you that I love you enough."
Carter lifted her free hand to caress his cheek, "You don't have to."
For a moment, they just looked at each other. They looked at each other with love reflected in their eyes and synchronized heart beats, their breath starting to fog the windows and the dull hum of the rain adding a welcomed sense of calm to the atmosphere.
Harry began to lean in first and Carter followed without really thinking about it. Their lips met in a gentle kiss that spoke volumes and lingered for a blissful moment.
"We're totally going to be soaked before we even get inside."
Carter giggled, "I told you we should have brought the umbrella."
Harry shrugged, his smile nearing his cheeks, "Oops."
Harry shoved his keys in his pocket and laughed with his hand on the door handle, "Here goes nothing."
Carter laughed as he took a casual stroll around the car. He knew that they were going to move slow anyway and he embraced it immediately.
Carter was still laughing as he helped her out of the car and tried to cover her with his jacket that was already soaked.
There was something about the way that he looked at her with his hair in his eyes and his wide smile that had the words 'I love you' tumbling from her lips after only a few moments.
They were soaking wet and practically dragging their clothes with them as they walked, but it was one of the best moments of their lives and they made no rush to make it inside the bustling restaurant.
Once they managed to make it through the front door, they were laughing and people were staring at them. It didn't matter though because they were in love and they were happy, even if they were drenched in a public place.
Carter smiled brightly once they had made it over to where Anne, Robin, Sam and Aurora sat. It was a little shocking to see that Sam and Aurora were still together, but neither Carter nor Harry made their surprise visible as they exchanged hugs with their parents and brief hello's.
Aurora smiled at Carter, "I didn't know you were pregnant. How far along are you?"
There was something in her smile that gave away her emotions. Harry saw it and so did Carter, but no one else seemed to notice. Aurora was still upset about the fact that she had lost Harry to someone else and it showed dimly.
Carter was very friendly in return, she found that there was no need to be hostile because they were both married and it really did appear that things had changed, "Nine months and three days. The twins don't seem to want to come out any time soon, but that's okay for now."
Anne took the opportunity to ask, "Have you two tried anything to induce labor?"
Harry took the lead with a shy smile, "Uh yeah, we've tried everything actually."
Sam looked at his brother with a raised eyebrow, "Even sex?"
Something about the way that he had said it made Carter laugh, "Oh yes, that was the first thing we tried."
Everyone got a good laugh out of the honesty and it wasn't long before the conversation drifted to the topic of 'I remember when'. Anne loved to share stories about when Harry and Sam were little and today was no exception.
"You two were so cute! You used to play war in the back yard and pretend that you were airmen saving everyone from the Japanese. The plane that you made out of the moving boxes was the cutest thing I've ever seen!"
Carter felt the pain mid laugh and latched her hand around Harry's arm. It wasn't intense, so she figured it was just the Braxton Hicks contractions again.
Harry diverted his attention to her immediately, his green eyes wide with concern and anticipation, "Is it happening?"
Carter shook her head quickly and let out a deep breath, "No, just the false contractions. My water didn't break yet."
Harry removed her hand from his wrist and laced their fingers together, "Are you sure? We're both soaking wet and it would be extremely hard to tell."
Now everyone had paused their conversation to make sure everything was alright.
Another wave of pain hit her, this one more painful than the last, and she squeezed his fingers tightly while biting down on her lip, "Nope. They're coming now. Oh God."
Harry instructed her to breathe as Anne helped her out of the booth as quickly as possible. He was slightly panicking, but on the inside it was much worse because he knew that the nearest hospital was ten minutes away.
In between horrible contractions, Carter managed to tell Robin to text Poppy and then pick her up from school. Poppy wanted to be there to see her new little brother and little sister and Carter had promised her that she would be.
A good few moments passed between her contractions and then she was trying not to scream and squeezing the life out of Harry's hand.
Carter refused to let go of him and somehow they ended up with Sam as their driver. He was oddly calm as he sped through the back streets in an attempt to get them to the hospital faster.
By the time they'd actually made it to the hospital, Carter was crowning and screaming at Harry for getting her pregnant. Everyone knew that she wasn't upset about having children, she was just in so much pain that she blamed him for it in an attempt to soothe it.
Anne, Robin, Sam, Aurora, and Poppy sat in the lobby for hours. They were all bored out of their minds, but they were just as anxious as Carter and Harry had been to meet the new generation of twins.
Meanwhile, in a room on the other end of the hospital, Carter was breathing deeply and looking at harry with tired eyes and an exhausted and grateful smile. Harry looked at her with bright eyes and a throbbing ache in his hand.
On the other side of the room, the nurse was cleaning their babies and checking them for any abnormalities.
Harry kissed Carter's sweaty forehead and smiled, "What do you want to name them?"
Carter laughed lightly, "Robin and Wren."
Harry nodded, his smile perking up as the nurse walked over with their little girl, "Sounds perfect to me."
The nurse caught Carter's attention and the tears finally came once she held their beautiful little girl in her arms. She smiled through it all and continued to cry when they handed her their little boy.
Carter rocked each baby gently in her arms and laughed happily, "We did it. We finally did it."
Harry, who had been crying with her, nodded in affirmation. He hadn't been able to take his eyes off of Carter and their beautiful twins, "Yes, we did."
Carter smiled down at the two small children bundled up in her arms, one in light pink and the other in light blue, and she knew that choosing to let Harry win was the best decision she'd ever made.
"We've been waiting for you two for a very long time. It's so so wonderful to finally have you here."

Thank you so much to everyone who has read/voted/commented on Masterpiece AND The Artist, it means the world to me and I'm so glad that so many of you have taken this journey with me, Carter, and Harry. I hope that this didn't disappoint anyone, I originally did not plan to write a sequel and then I planned a totally different ending when I started this so hopefully you thought that it worked out in the end. Again, thank you SO MUCH for everything <3
