twelve
Carter and Harry had gone back to where they met. Carter was afraid of Jacob finding out where she was and coming for her and Harry wasn't going to let that happen.
Her apartment was still not hers anymore, but Harry's warehouse was drastically different. All of the bright colors had been replaced with sad and gray tones, he'd completed the bathroom, and he upgraded his kitchen.
Everything was beautiful except the sadness that seeped through all of his masterpiece's. As soon as she noticed it, Harry frowned with her and covered everything up with a promise to store them somewhere else and upgrade to his usual cheery works.
Pandora was elated to see her again, the two had talked over Skype and sent calls and texts back and forth, but it wasn't as frequent as it used to be and they missed each other terribly. She was happy to see that she had gone back to Harry, even though a lot of trouble led up to her going back to him.
They had only been home for a few days when Carter woke early in the morning, struggled to free herself from Harry's hold, and rushed to the bathroom only to end up vomiting. The pattern continued every now and then and she panicked around ten, shaking Harry's arm and trying to wake him up.
Tears burned at the corners of her eyes and her lips trembled. Harry was slow to wake up, just like always, and rubbed the sleep from his eyes, a yawn taking it's hold almost immediately.
Once the sleep had left, only slightly, and he'd noticed how upset Carter was, he sat up quickly, "Sweetheart, what is it? Please stop crying, I hate it when you cry."
Carter crawled into the bed and he held her without her having to say anything, his hands rubbing soothing circles on her back.
"Hey, what happened?"
His voice was soft and laced with heavy concern, his eyes filled with worry. Carter wiped her eyes and took deep breaths to calm herself down.
"I'm pregnant, Harry. And I...I don't know if it's yours."
She watched his eyes widen slowly and his lips part only to close again. He thought about her confession briefly, "How do you know? Did you take any tests?"
Carter shook her head quickly, "No, but I've been throwing up all morning and I feel like I did the...the last time that I was pregnant."
She lost all of her newfound calmness seconds later, heavy tears rolling down her cheeks as she clung to Harry, "God, I don't know if it's yours."
Harry thought about how long it had been since her incident and gently eased her back so that she was looking into his eyes when he spoke.
"Sweetheart, enough time hasn't passed for it to be his." The left side of his mouth lifted slightly, "Look at your stomach too, doesn't it look a little bigger than it should be if you just found out?"
Carter bit down on her lower lip, thinking carefully about what he'd said. The last time that she was pregnant, she'd only gotten morning sickness when she was a good month in. And, now that he'd brought it up, her stomach did look a little bigger than it had before, only a little, but she noticed it.
It took Harry by complete surprise when she beamed and threw her arms around his neck, "You're right! Harry, we're going to have a baby!"
She pulled back only to kiss all over his face numerous times before stopping at his lips and kissing him deeply, his hands resting on her hips.
The happiness only lasted for so long though. After a few minutes, Carter had started to think about what happened with her last pregnancy and burst out in frantic tears.
"Oh God. Harry, I can't do this. I can't lose another baby, I can't."
Harry pulled her back in and held her tightly, "Shh, sweetheart. Relax. You don't know that. Please don't think like that."
Seeing her so heartbroken was like taking a bullet to the chest, especially when she was supposed to be happy because they were going to have a baby.
Carter's sobs wracked her entire body, her fingers twisting in the soft fabric of his shirt, "I can't lose another baby. I can't."
Harry pulled her back again, placed his hands on her cheeks, and kissed her hard. She shouldn't be thinking like that and it was the only thing he could think of that would calm her down so that he could talk to her.
She gave into him in moments, her tears slowing and finally stopping and her breath returning to normal as he pulled away, his hands still holding her face.
"Stop that. Negative thoughts aren't good for anyone and you don't know that for sure, sweetheart. Being upset about something that may not even happen will eat you alive. Please, just give it a chance. We don't know anything for sure, but giving up hope so soon...Carter..."
Carter understood without his finished thoughts. He was right, worrying about it now would eat her alive and she couldn't give up hope so quickly like that. And, if her heart was destined to break again, at least this time he would be there to pick up the pieces.
. . .
The trial had come and gone and Jacob was paying the price for what he'd done to Carter. Granted, she still wasn't okay, but she's been going to therapy twice a week and Harry was another kind of therapy on his own.
So far, everything was going well with the baby, and Carter's mind had relaxed so much that she didn't think about the possibility of losing it anymore. She was infatuated with the idea of being inextricably linked to Harry and having a sweet little baby to take care of.
Harry was even more enamored by the idea of having a baby with Carter. He'd wanted to have children for as long as he could remember and he was so thrilled that he'd stopped focusing so much on his art and instead completely devoted himself to Carter and the little life inside of her.
Soft moonlight filtered in through the window, casting a gentle glow upon their skin and pulling them together like it pulled in the tides.
Harry had his hands on her waist, but they moved frequently to her stomach and his smile would brighten each and every time that the action was carried out.
Carter loved the way that his hands felt against her skin. Harry had such beautiful hands, the hands of an artist. There were callouses on his fingers from all of the time he'd spent drawing and crafting, but his skin was also the perfect kind of soft that never ceased to rouse the butterflies in her stomach.
Always, there would be some sort of residue covering his fingers, but Carter always found it beautiful. Recently, there wasn't any paint or oils, only charcoal and graphite, but she didn't mind the change because he was avoiding the fumes for her sake.
She was staring at her hands, he noticed it after a little while and looked at her with a smile behind his eyes and on his lips. Harry stopped tracing invisible patterns in her skin only to take her hand in his and link their fingers in the space between them.
"What are you thinking about?"
He kissed her knuckles, her cheeks flushed.
"Your hands."
One of his eyebrow's lifted playfully, "My hands?"
Carter couldn't help the giggle that fell from her lips. Harry stared at the way that she looked when she giggled. Her eyes scrunched and lines appeared at their edges, and her smile was the purest and most beautiful that he had ever seen it.
He'd watched her laugh and giggle countless times before, but there was something about the way that she did it this time that had him mesmerized.
The colour in her cheeks deepened the longer that he looked at her lovingly. Carter tore her eyes away from his to focus them on their entwined hands.
"Why are you looking at me like that?"
Harry shook his head slowly and blinked a few times, his smile returning brighter than before, "Because you're so beautiful. It's still hard to believe that you're mine."
Carter started to mess with his fingers before changing her mind and kissing each of his knuckles. He could feel her smile against his skin.
"I could say the same to you, but you prefer the word handsome instead."
With his free hand, Harry lifted her chin gently with his fingers and pressed his lips to hers in a lingering kiss.
"I love you."
Carter kept her eyes closed and her smile intact for a moment. When she opened her eyes, Harry was still looking at her the same adoring way, "I love you too, Harry. Always."
Again, he closed the distance and kissed her, only, this time, his lips hovered above hers and he spoke softly, "Always."
There wasn't a TV in their room, but the sounds of the city in the distance were more than enough to make sure that the silence wasn't smothering.
Harry's hands returned to her stomach after a while and Carter bit her smile, "You're so infatuated with this baby already and there's still so much time left."
Harry only hummed in response, his fingers continuing their dance over her skin, "Is that a bad thing?"
His smile was another thing that she loved, especially the smile he wore when he was talking to the baby or running his hands over the small bump in her stomach. It was times like this, where they were alone and just lying in bed at night, that held a special place in her memory.
Carter shook her head, her smile now showing her teeth, "Not at all."
A few minutes passed before Harry pressed a kiss to her stomach, mumbling an 'I love you' right after, and pulled her close to him.
"Tomorrow can't some any sooner, can it?"
Carter hummed and cuddled into his warm embrace, "No, but at least it's not so far away. What are you hoping for?"
Early in the morning the next day, Carter was going to have another ultrasound that would tell them whether or not they were having a boy or a girl and it was all Harry could talk about for weeks.
"Anything really. The gender doesn't matter to me, as long as we have a little baby. A girl would be cute though because I'm sure that she'd look a lot more like you."
Carter laughed lightly, "Okay, so, technically speaking, you want a girl?"
Harry nodded, his smile wide, "Yes. But a boy is more than wonderful as well."
"You're more than wonderful, did you know that?"
He kissed her cheek, "I did, but so are you."
. . .
"You're going to feel a slight chill and a slight pressure, but that's normal so don't worry."
Carter nodded and smiled up at Harry, who was standing next to her and holding her hand. She'd been through this before, so everything was not very new to her, but it was new to Harry and he was watching everything with awe.
He was adorable.
The cool gel was on her skin after a few more moments, but she didn't turn her head to look at the monitor. She was still terrified of having to go through a repeat of the last time even though Harry was with her and holding her hand.
Harry bent down and pressed his lips to her forehead, "It's alright, sweetheart. Relax."
Carter nodded and exhaled a deep breath, but Harry still held her hand a little tighter because he knew that she was still freaking out internally.
The moment that she'd turned her head, the sonographer had found the baby. Carter's heartbeat was loud in her ears and there were tears in her eyes. There was heartbeat this time and she was overwhelmed with relief.
"And there's your baby! Would you like to know the gender, or are we keeping it a surprise?"
Harry squeezed her hand excitedly, his grin massive as she spoke, "We'd like to know the gender, please."
The woman smiled in return and asked another question, "What are you hoping for?"
Harry beat her to the answer this time, "A girl."
"In that case, congratulations! You're going to have a beautiful little girl."
Harry nearly jumped around the room, he was like a kid that had just been told to get whatever candy he wanted in a candy shop.
He pressed a heavy kiss to Carter's cheek and she laughed at how giddy he had become.
"We're going to have a little girl!"
