thirteen
Carter awoke to Harry bringing her breakfast in bed. For months, he'd been doing cute things like that because he didn't want her to do too much with the baby. He was overprotective already and, at times, it was cute, but, more often than not, it was a little irritating because she was perfectly capable of doing a lot of things while pregnant.
This was one of the cute times.
Luck enough for him, it was also helpful because getting up and down the stairs had started to become a challenge.
Harry kissed her cheek and carefully placed her food down on the neat little tray he'd bought her weeks ago. It was one that they used in hospitals, yeah, it was on the uglier side, but it worked well enough.
"Good morning, sweetheart. Sleep well?"
Carter smiled in return, "Very well. Thank you for breakfast, you didn't have to do this you know."
Harry shrugged, his smile remaining just as bright as the sun outside, "I wanted to and I've got a surprise for you too."
She rolled her eyes playfully, "You've always got a surprise for me."
And it was true; he really did always have a surprise for her. It was what he did as an artist, what they each did as artists. Every day he had something new to show her and Carter could pretend that she was used to it after all this time, but she wasn't and he could tell that she still loved every little surprise that came from just being with him.
She actually was a little upset that she hardly ever had any new tattoo designs or stories of clients to tell him, considering that she was stuck at home because she was too big to work and didn't want to risk anything with the baby.
At six months already, her baby bump was huge and still growing. Okay, huge is an overstatement, but it was still very noticeable. Harry would always come home and put his hands on her stomach, his smile wide and his eyes bright, and he would talk to their unborn baby and place kisses on her skin.
Carter loved watching him do that and feeling that little kick that his voice brought out.
"While that is true, and a bit hurtful in the way you said it, I am willing to forgive you and still show you anyway."
Carter laughed loudly and kissed his cheek, "'m sorry that I hurt your feelings. Can't wait to see your surprise."
Harry really didn't mind at all, he just wanted to make her laugh. And he was sure that she knew that too because the look that she wore gave her away.
He didn't say anything and instead climbed into bed beside her to lay his hands on her stomach and talk to their little girl.
Harry knew that she wasn't going to talk back, but it helped development and she would most certainly recognize his voice by the time she entered the world in the next three months. That, and he just enjoyed feeling her little kicks and the bump she gave Carter.
Everything about Carter and the little life they had created infatuated him to no end and he made absolutely no move to hide it.
Carter watched him happily, less focused on her food then she should have been, he was distracting, but he was her favourite distraction.
Finally, after a period of time that neither of them had paid attention to, Carter had finished eating and Harry went to clean the dishes while she changed into clothes more suitable for the public eye. Carter didn't think that one of Harry's t-shirts and her underwear would have been a good choice to wear outside, even if it was extremely comfortable.
Despite Harry's many 'instructions' for her to wait for him to finish and help her down the stairs, Carter walked down herself. It was a slow journey, and a careful one at that, but she managed it with no problems despite what Harry thought would happen.
Harry pouted as he put away the remaining dishes and wiped his hands on his jeans that still looked like they were smothering him despite what Carter had told him about jeans that were a tad bit looser.
"Carter."
She grinned cheekily in response, "Harry."
Harry rolled his eyes playfully under her stare, it was better to joke about things with her rather than accidentally push a button to activate the bad side of her hormones. He'd done it once and that was more than enough for him to never do it again.
"You didn't wait for me."
Even his tone held a pout, but Carter only shrugged and continued to smile. He was being a little over the top again and she didn't feel like waiting because it wasn't necessary.
"No, I didn't. Harry, you're going a little too far sometimes. Yeah, the stairs really aren't great, but I'm a big girl and I can do it, even though it takes me a century."
Carter realized on her way down, that the only way to get him to calm down was to tell him what he was doing, even if it hurt his feelings. It was just too much and it was starting to irritate her every now and then.
Harry's lips went from a pout to a soft smile, realization hitting him just after she'd explained to him what he had been unconsciously doing, "You're right, I'm sorry sweetheart. Are you ready to go and see your surprise?"
Carter reached her hand out and took his, lacing their fingers together immediately, "Ready when you are."
. . .
Carter felt like they'd been in the car for hours.
"Harry, I have to pee. Are we almost there?"
She'd been trying to hold it for a while, but having a baby pressing down on your bladder really made things difficult and, if they weren't close, he was going to have to pull over.
Harry took a left turn onto a nice street with pretty houses, the old kind that were more artistic and that happened to be Carter's favourite, his lips lifting into a dazzling smile and his dimples sinking deep into his cheeks.
He drove up to this beautiful house, parked the car, and killed the engine, "We're here."
Carter lifted an eyebrow in question, she was confused because he'd driven her all around the city just to pull up in someone's driveway, "What exactly is 'here'?"
Harry took off his seatbelt and turned in his seat so that he was facing her, his green eyes bright and his smile spectacular, "Do you remember, a few months into your pregnancy, when you said that we needed a bigger place if we were going to raise a child, a real place with actual rooms and everything?"
Carter nodded, she remembered that conversation clearly, but what did that have to do with where they were?
"Well, I bought us a house! This one, specifically."
Carter burst into tears, "You bought us a house?"
Harry bit his lip and nodded, he couldn't tell if she was happy or upset.
He didn't have to wait long to figure it out. Carter threw her arms around him, as best as she could manage from her seat and with the baby bump, "I love you so much."
Harry smiled, his arms wrapping around her in return, "I love you so much more. Do you want to go inside? You can use the bathroom, it's fully functional, I promise."
Carter laughed, wiped her eyes, and pulled back. She smiled at him so profoundly that he forgot how to breathe.
"I'd love to."
It took a couple of minutes to get her out of the car and then another to find the right key and unlock the door, but once the door swung open and the inside was visible, Carter's hand flew over her mouth.
Harry had furnished the entire place and decorated everything so beautifully that she could hardly find the words to say. It didn't help that her added hormone levels made her extra emotional.
"Harry..."
He was smiling from ear to ear, watching her every reaction with excitement, "Yes?"
Carter turned to face him and pulled his face down with her hands, her lips kissing every inch of skin, 'I love you' spoken between kisses, over and over again. After she'd kissed him, what felt like a hundred wonderful times, she found his lips and kissed him with so much love that he felt like his head was spinning.
"How did you do all of this? It's so beautiful..."
Harry shrugged like he hadn't really done anything spectacular at all, even though he knew that he'd just sent her heart into overdrive, "I was saving up for a long time, since before you left me actually, and this is what it was for, for us to start a family. I've been coming here for a few months and getting everything ready so that we could just bring whatever we want and move in when you want to. The nursery isn't done yet though, because that's far more yours than anyone else's and I wanted you to do that. I did paint the walls though."
"I love you." She couldn't say it enough, but Harry didn't mind it at all.
He showed her to the bathroom and gave her a few minutes before giving her the grand tour.
"So, for right now, this would be our bedroom because the stairs are a bit of a struggle, but our real bedroom is upstairs and next to the nursery. Basically, it's the guest room, but it's got its own bathroom and everything like the master."
Carter nodded and stepped up on her toes to kiss his cheek, "It's perfect, Harry, just like you."
A light blush rose to his cheeks as he smiled down at her, "More like you, but that works too. Wanna see the nursery now?"
Carter nodded quickly, "Yes, please!"
She couldn't wait to see what he had painted for their little girl. The stairs took them a bit, but they made it and Harry briefly showed her their bedroom before walking a little further and leading her to the nursery.
He stopped with his hand on the doorknob and turned to face her with a nervous smile, "I really hope that you like it. But, if you don't, just say so and I'll repaint it to look however you want it to, I promise."
Carter smiled up at him softly, "I'm sure I'll love it just like all of your other works. Want to show me now, or just stand here for the rest of the day?"
The sun was already setting and casting it's warm and dying glow upon the city and everything in it, but Carter actually wanted to stay the night now that she had seen the inside of the house, their house.
Harry eased open the door and stepped led her inside. Carter's eyes widened instantly. She knew that he had done something spectacular, but what she saw certainly beat her expectations, if that was even possible.
He'd painted the entire room with breathtaking images of beautiful trees that were both calming and baby friendly so that their little girl wouldn't wake and be terrified, the colors he'd chosen weren't too bright and they added to the calm atmosphere, and there was a beautiful quote on one of the walls that completely melted Carter's heart.
Let her sleep, for, when she wakes, she will move mountains.
He hadn't put in much furniture, but what he had put in was wonderful and Carter couldn't believe that he had done so much for her.
She was crying again, but this time he knew that it was because she was happy. Harry wiped her tears away with the pad of his thumb, his green eyes meeting her blue ones, "Do you like it?"
Carter laughed and nodded, "I love it, so so much. Can we stay here tonight? It's so beautiful, I don't want to leave."
Harry smiled, he thought that she might say that and had taken some of their clothes with him when he had come to work on getting the house ready for her.
"Of course, everything works and we've even got clothes too. Sorry, I did know where that dress you love went, I just didn't want to ruin the surprise because I knew that you would want to stay."
Carter closed the space between them and kissed him softly, "You are absolutely perfect in every single way."
Harry gently wiped away a few more joyful tears, "Not as perfect as you, my love."
