fourteen

Harry had just pushed the crib up to the wall when Carter spoke softly, "I haven't felt her kick in a while..."

Harry stood up, rolled his shoulders, and wiped his hands on the back of his jeans, "Huh. I'm sure it's nothing, sweetheart. Sometimes there are babies that don't move around or kick as much."

He smiled at her warmly and she sighed softly in return, "You're right. Doesn't mean that I don't miss it though."

She missed more than what she told him, but he was probably right. Every baby was different and she didn't need to be thinking negatively again.

Harry kissed her softly and linked their hands, "I love you."

Carter smiled, he always knew how to make her feel better, sometimes without saying a single word, "I love you too."

"So, since we spent all day finishing up this beautiful nursery, how about we go out for a nice dinner? Sorry, no wine for you Mrs. Soon-to-be-a-mummy."

In all reality, he did all of the work with the nursery. All Carter did was pick out furniture and watch as he assembled and arranged it all. But, she wasn't going to say no to a nice dinner and she adored the look on his face whenever he mentioned the fact that they were going to be parents soon.

"For the record, you did absolutely all of the work, and, yes, I would love to go out for a nice dinner Mr. Soon-to-be-a-daddy."

Harry laughed and playfully rolled his eyes, she'd added the little remark at the end just to make fun of him, but he didn't mind it at all. "Nice-nice, or normal nice?"

Carter thought about the question for a moment, weighing her options. She really loved it when he wore a suit, she found that he was ten times more attractive when he did, but she didn't feel like dressing up and normal nice was always better than nice-nice.

"Normal nice, I vote pizza."

Harry laughed again and Carter took a moment to revel in the sound. He still hated his laugh, but he hadn't ever hidden it from her and she loved it to death, especially when it was the really high pitched one that made him cover his mouth with his hands and brought out all the crinkles by his eyes.

"Whatever you want, sweetheart." He knew better than to argue at this point. Sometimes she even changed her mind last minute so there was really no point, that and hormones were a scary thing to deal with.

They were heading out the door only a few minutes later and Carter regretted not choosing nice-nice because a) Harry in suits was her absolute favourite (besides when he was naked anyway), b) She missed out on all the kisses Harry would give her while she got dressed and she also missed his hands over her stomach, and c) she kind of wanted to dress up now that they were leaving.

She didn't say anything though and pushed the thought aside, just being with Harry was enough to keep her happy, even if he accidentally pushed her buttons recently.

Harry held her hand the entire car ride, his fingers squeezing hers lightly every now and then and his thumb running over the top of hers.

He could tell that she didn't feel right for more than one reason and was trying to comfort her without prying or upsetting her. Carter appreciated his actions tremendously. She really didn't want to talk about how upset it was making her that their little girl had just decided to not be as frequent with her kicks or how she felt detached, like she'd lost her. Talking about it would only make it real and she didn't want it to be real; she didn't know if she could handle it again, especially at six months.

There was also the fact that she felt like something else was wrong. It felt like someone was following them or watching them and it made her beyond nervous and beyond uncomfortable.

Carter had just decided to mention that last thing to Harry when he parked the car, but his smile distracted her and made her feel like she was a thousand miles away and she ended up staying silent and returning his smile.

Harry lifted her hand to his lips and let a soft kiss linger before he got out of the car and ran to her side to open her door. Carter felt warm all over, his lips on her skin ignited her blood and brought a welcomed sense of relief and calm. She would never tire of the effect that he had on her.

The car door was pulled back a few seconds later and Harry ducked his head in to press another loving kiss to her cheek.

Carter flushed and reached for his hand, her eyes were glossy because she'd been thinking too much in the time that it took him to get to her side of the car, "Please kiss me again, for real this time."

Just one look and he understood, his soft lips meeting hers in moments, mending her broken pieces and heavy, fragmented, and depressing thoughts with just one caress. Their tender embrace was gone but soon replaced again, this time on her forehead.

"I love you."

Carter and Harry didn't throw around those three words as much as they seemed to, each time they said them to one another it meant something. It meant many things and always depended on the context of what was going on, but the meaning that always stuck was 'my heart is yours and it's here whenever you need it.'

Harry smiled at her softly, holding her hand a bit tighter as he asked, "Ready?"

Carter nodded and matched his smile, she felt much better, even if the blue feelings were still lingering. Carefully, he helped her out of the car, his lips catching her temple after her feet were planted solidly on the ground.

She didn't question the action and smiled brightly, the blood rising to her cheeks and his finger's squeezing hers lightly.

They had to walk about a block or so to get to the restaurant, it was a small place and the parking lot filled up quickly, but neither of them ever minded, even with the baby bump, because it had become their favourite after only one visit.

Carter leaned her head against Harry's shoulder as they walked. He smiled like it was the best thing she could have ever done.

Carter looked up at him and the only thought that crossed her mind was; beautiful. His eyes captured every little light around them and shone with the purest adoration, the light from the street lamps and shops cast a brilliant glow around him, almost like he was an angel, everything about him was breathtaking and, as she was admiring him, it felt like time had stopped just for them.

She'd only gotten to look at him for hardly a minute when a loud bang echoed all around them. People screamed and fell to the floor. Harry's eyes met hers seconds after, wide and frightened, his lips parted as if he were about to say something.

His free hand lifted to his chest. He held it there for the briefest of moments before pulling it back. His eyes widened even more, if that was even possible, dark blood coated his fingers.

Carter was just as stunned as he was, taking in what had happened only when she saw his hand go to his chest. Red bloomed in a wide and growing patch on his white shirt, like a tragic masterpiece that she couldn't stand to look at for more than a few seconds.

His knees weakened and he dropped her hand as he fell to the ground. Everyone was screaming and a few people were shouting at the emergency operators already. Carter and Harry were silent.

Heavy tears clouded her vision as she dropped down beside him, frantically searching for anything that would help to stop the bleeding. She couldn't think of anything and pressed her hands to the wound on his chest with as much pressure as she could.

Harry's breathing was erratic and his chest heaved with each breath. His pretty green eyes were focused on the sky above their heads.

"It's beautiful out tonight."

Carter sobbed loudly, he was in shock and slipping through her fingertips and she couldn't do anything about it.

Everyone around could hear her heart break the longer that she sat there with him, her hands putting pressure on his chest and blood seeping through her fingers.

He looked at her the second she'd made the heart wrenching sound, his lips trembling and losing their healthy pink color. Harry started to see black dots in his vision and forced the words out before it was too late, "I love you."

Carter shook her head quickly, "No. Don't say that. You're not leaving me. You can't. You promised me."

Heavy tears rolled down his cheeks and his breathing had become less erratic, he was trying to hold on, but his body was giving up regardless of how much he fought against it.

"I...I'm so...sorry..."

Author's Note: *waits for the oncoming screaming* I'm sorry!
