Chapter 38

Adam and Ty enter the castle and walk over to where the others have set up beds and a medical station. Quintana is brewing some healing potions and regeneration potions, as well as grabbing bandages.

Jerome sits beside Khali on one of the beds, his wings drooping. The girl notices the angel and sighs.

"Look at me," she orders. He turns his head and their eyes lock. He has cuts and scratches all over, his fur is matted with blood in some spots and ripped out in others. He looks like he got hit by a car.

Quintana walks over and hands Khali two bottles of potions, bandages, and a towel. She pours some of the healing potion onto the towel and presses it onto one of Jerome's many wounds. He groans in pain, squeezing his eyes shut.

"That hurts like hell," he mutters through gritted teeth.

"I know," the demon replies. She hands him the regeneration potion. "Drink this. It will bring your strength up."

"You sound like Quin," Jerome says, smiling lightly. "When we were younger, sometimes we would get into trouble and hurt ourselves. She would bring us back to the castle and say the exact same thing when she would give us that potion." He laughs, recalling the memory. "We would always hide from Notch when she was healing us because we didn't want him to know what we were doing, but I realize now that we weren't very sneaky."

Khali chuckles weakly.

"Once you're done getting treated, you should head to bed. You'll heal faster that way," Quintana says to everyone. They all murmur in agreement, and Ian gets up to go to bed.

"What about us? We don't have a place to sleep," Libby asks, stealing a glance at Ian before looking back to the mudkip. Her voice wavers, tear streaks still evident on her face. The red rims around her eyes make her blue iris' pop in a miserable way.

"There are spare bedrooms, but if you want, you can stay in a room with someone. You'll probably get more comfort if you have company, especially after today's events," Quintana suggests. Libby nods and follows Ian, who puts his arm around her waist as they walk to his room.

"Khali, let me treat your wounds so we can get some sleep," Jerome insists. The demon girls sighs and wraps his last bandage.

"Sure."

Taking the bottle of healing potion, Jerome dampens a new cloth that isn't covered in blood and starts cleaning Khali's wounds. It hurts, but her body is so numb from sorrow that she barely feels it.

"Talk to me," Jerome says.

"About what? My sister died today," Khali replies. Her heart squeezes uncomfortably at the thought, and tears well in her eyes.

"What's your favourite animal?" he asks.

"A unicorn. Why?"

"Unicorns are awesome, but I've always loved dogs most. They're so lovable."

"Dogs aren't magical or mythical creatures. Why are we talking about this?"

"If I have to pick a magic or mythical creature, I say dragon. Dragons are super cool, but the Ender Dragon is kind of mean."

"I heard that, Jerome!" Ty calls from across the room.

"So did I!" Justina points out.

"You guys aren't full Ender Dragons," Jerome replies.

"Touché," Ty replies.

Jerome looks at Khali and smiles. She understands why he's talking about animals, and she's so glad that he is. It's a simple distraction, but she appreciates it all the same.

Khali manages a small smile. Pain doesn't just disappear, but with these guys, it kind of fades.
