Chapter 34
The next day, Adam races out of the castle and finds Julie, his sparring partner. When she sees him, she grins and whips out her sword.
"You ready?"
"As I'll ever be," he replies.
They land in a street and start sparring.
"So Adam, how's life?" Julie asks, grinning.
"Wow, popping the important questions right off the bat," Adam chuckles.
Julie shrugs and swings her sword at him. The angel side-steps and stabs at her, which she easily deflects.
"Seriously though, how is everything going?" she asks.
"Pretty good. I'm glad I don't have to worry about killing you anymore," Adam replies.
"So am I."
Julie drops her sword and Adam stops himself before he takes another swing.
"What are you doing?"
"Why don't we take a walk? I'm tired of fighting for right now," Julie says. She spins her sword before slipping it into its sheath.
"It's still morning," Adam says, confused.
"Exactly! Let's go do something."
The angel gives in and follows Julie down the cobble streets. Birds sing their morning songs, which makes Adam smile. Those birds are so innocent. They don't have all the problems that he does.
Adam looks over at Julie, who's looking up at all the buildings. Her chocolatey brown hair shimmers in the sun and her eyes, a beautiful kaleidoscope of the colours of the sea, are filled with so much life that Adam, in that moment, can't possibly think of her as a killer.
She looks over at him and he looks away, instead peering at the small cottages that line the road.
"I can't believe that at one point, I would have taken a torch to these buildings. They're quite lovely, don't you think?" Julie asks. The angel smiles.
"What happened to that cold hearted girl that tried to kill me? Where did she go?"
"She left. I didn't like her anymore," the demon replies. She flutters her wings. "I'm not her."
"I'm glad."
Julie smiles.
"Sometime, after this battle is done, I want to get a cottage. If I'm going to live an immortal life, I might as well live somewhere really cosy for a bit. Get in touch with who I am."
Adam nods, deeply enjoying the girl's company.
"When this battle is done, I'm hanging up my sword. I'm done. No more fighting for me," she finishes.
The two winged beings continue to stroll down the street, breathing the fresh air and listening to the birds chirp. Eventually, they reach a small, circular courtyard. In the centre stands a statue of a nameless angel, her wings outstretched as far as they can go and her arms spread as though she's flying. Adam and Julie look at her, and the demon girl sighs.
"When I was little, I wanted to be that angel. I was still good. Then, as I got older, I realized that I could never be that angel, because she was too good and I was too twisted. I've been alive for a very short time considering I'm a demon, Adam, and if I'm going to live an immortal life, I want to live it well."
Adam listens intently, his eyes still on the angel statue.
"When this battle is done, you can live with me for the rest of eternity."
Julie smiles and takes his hand.
"That sounds excellent."
Together, they go and sit on a bench right beside the statue. They remain in silence, letting the warm sun wash over their faces.
Adam looks over at Julie. She notices him looking and their eyes lock. Slowly, they lean into each other and their lips meet. The angel wraps his arms around her and pulls her in closer, deepening the kiss.
When they break apart, Julie's eye seem to flash.
"Woah," she mumbles. Adam laughs.
"Never been kissed before?"
She shakes her head and wraps her hands around the angel's neck.
"I'd like to try it again."
