Chapter nineteen
Timothy woke to silence.
Not the kind that soothed.
The kind that pressed.
His head throbbed dully, a slow pulse at the back of his skull. He inhaled carefully, steadying himself before opening his eyes.
Dim light.
Concrete walls.
A single bulb overhead.
And the unmistakable weight of restraint.
His wrists were bound to the arms of a chair. Ankles secured. Tight, but not careless.
Professional.
Timothy didn't move immediately.
He listened.
Breathing-his own.
Another... slower, controlled.
He wasn't alone.
"Good," a voice said from the shadows. "You're awake."
Timothy's gaze shifted.
Kelvin stepped forward, calm, composed, as though he had been standing there the entire time.
Watching.
"You hit hard," Timothy muttered, testing the tension in the restraints. "Not exactly how I imagined our first meeting."
Kelvin said nothing at first.
He simply studied him.
Measured.
"You imagined a handshake?" Kelvin asked finally.
Timothy let out a faint breath of amusement. "I imagined a conversation."
"You're getting one." Kelvin pulled a chair and sat opposite him.
Not too close.
Not too far.
Deliberate distance.
Timothy leaned back as much as the restraints allowed, eyes scanning the room again.
Then-
He saw him.
John.
Restrained. Weakened. Watching.
Interesting.
"So," Timothy said, turning back to Kelvin, "you abduct strangers now? Or am I special?"
Kelvin ignored the jab.
"You're alive," he said. "That should tell you something."
Timothy smirked slightly. "That you need something from me."
Kelvin's expression didn't change.
"Or that I'm deciding if you're useful."
A pause.
The air shifted.
Timothy tilted his head slightly. "And have you decided?"
Kelvin leaned forward, elbows resting lightly on his knees.
"Not yet."
Silence stretched between them.
Measured.
Testing.
Timothy broke it.
"You went through a lot of trouble to bring me here," he said. "You tracked me. Watched me. Set this up."
A beat.
"That means you're not reckless."
Kelvin's eyes narrowed slightly.
Timothy continued. "But knocking me out?" he added. "That wasn't strategy."
A faint pause.
"That was fear."
The room stilled.
John shifted slightly in his chair.
Kelvin didn't react immediately.
Then-
He stood.
Slowly.
Walked past Timothy.
Circled him once.
"You think I'm afraid of you?" Kelvin asked quietly.
Timothy didn't turn his head.
"No," he said calmly. "I think you're afraid of losing control."
Kelvin stopped behind him. Then he moved back into view. Closer this time.
"You're observant," Kelvin said. "That might keep you alive."
Timothy smiled faintly. "That's the plan."
Kelvin reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.
He tapped the screen and turned it toward Timothy.
A frozen image.
Timothy.
At the airport.
Walking.
Unaware.
Timothy's eyes flickered-just slightly.
Kelvin noticed.
"I've been watching you since you landed," Kelvin said. "I know where you go, who you meet, what you do."
A pause.
"So let's not pretend you have leverage here."
Timothy held his gaze.
"And yet," he said, "you still need me."
Kelvin's jaw tightened.
Not anger.
Recognition.
Then he smirked. "No," he said quietly. "We need each other."
Timothy blinked-just once.
That... he hadn't expected.
Interesting.
He leaned forward slightly, studying Kelvin with renewed focus.
"You want the same thing I do," Timothy continued. "Why?"
Kelvin held his gaze.
For a moment, he said nothing.
Then-
"Because," Kelvin said calmly, "the man you want dead..."
A pause.
"...is the same man who took something important from me."
The room fell into a heavier silence.
Timothy's expression didn't change-but something behind his eyes did.
Understanding.
Not sympathy.
Recognition.
Kelvin stepped closer.
"So now," he added, voice low and controlled, "you can stop asking the wrong questions..."
Another step.
"...and start proving why I shouldn't leave you exactly where you are."
A pause.
"Tell me something I don't already know."
Timothy's eyes flicked briefly toward John.
Then back.
Kelvin could feel the wheels turning in Timothy's head.
"I believe John has already filled you in on the structure," Timothy said. "The hierarchy. The operations."
Kelvin said nothing.
Waiting.
So Timothy continued.
"Our boss doesn't trust anyone," he said. "Not even his inner circle."
A pause.
"That includes John."
John stiffened slightly.
Kelvin noticed.
"The night the clan was attacked-the one that led to his brother being taken," Timothy continued, "wasn't just an ambush."
Kelvin's focus sharpened.
"It was a setup."
Silence.
Even the air seemed to hold still.
Kelvin sat back down in his chair.
"Explain."
Timothy met his gaze.
"Your enemy didn't just lose his brother," he said quietly. "He was led to lose him."
A beat.
"And the person who gave that order..."
Timothy let the words hang.
Deliberate.
"...is closer to him than you think."
The room shifted.
John's breathing changed.
Kelvin's eyes darkened.
He noticed the game had changed.
And for the first time-
Timothy wasn't just a captive.
He was becoming an asset.
