Chapter 39

Doctor Henry Wu's Lab

A strange, sleek green dinosaur was eating a large piece of meat, its claws digging roughly into the exposed flesh.

Dr. Wu watched the hybrid through the large glass pane of his lab. I know you can take down all those other hybrids. He put his hand to the glass, smiling as he watched his creature, Stegarnozin, walk towards the pool of water.

The Stegarnozin looked up, water dripping from his jaws. It lifted its tail when it saw Dr. Wu, and when he whistled, the hybrid bounded towards him happily, his tail wagging like a dog. The Stegarnozin opened his jaws, his tongue hanging out.

Dr. Wu clapped. "Good boy!" He praised. He walked over to the keypad by a desk and typed in a code, his white lab coat reflecting the light overhead. A door by the glass pane opened, and Dr. Wu bent down, grabbing a slightly meaty bone from a box. He headed towards the outside, the bone in his hand.

"Oh, you're giving him a treat again?"

Dr. Wu tossed the bone in the air, laughing to himself as the hybrid caught the bone. He put his hand on the hybrid's head, noting that the hybrid was wagging its tail.

"Uh, hello?"

Dr. Wu sighed inwardly and turned, seeing one of his lab assistants standing in the doorway. He put his hand to his face. "Who the hell said you could come in?" He growled.

"I came in just to check if things were ok in here!" The woman responded, moving her hair out of her face.

"Well why wouldn't they be?" Dr. Wu responded. He turned to Stegarnozin, thoughts running in his mind. "Hey, boy, kill that bastard," he spat.

The woman went pale. "Y-you're joking, right? Wait, please, don't do this!"

The green hybrid lifted its head, then leaped towards the woman, making her scream. The woman ducked under the hybrid, then lunged towards the door. The hybrid's claws caught the woman's ankle, drawing a huge gash.

Dr. Wu backed away. "Finish her," he called, his white lab coat getting sprayed with blood as the hybrid clamped his jaws around the woman's ankle.

The woman then ripped her leg away from the hybrid and crawled behind the door, slamming it in the hybrid's face. She crawled on the floor towards the other door, leaving behind a trail of blood.

The Stegarnozin reared back, growling, then slammed its spiked tail into the glass. The glass shattered and the shards began to rain down around the hybrid, sprinkling his scales like crystals. He slammed into the room, hooking his large, long claws into the woman's back and dragging her towards him. Blood spattered the hybrid's face as he clamped his jaws around her throat.

Dr. Wu watched the woman die, his face showing no emotion. "Huh, what a mess," he sighed as he looked at the glass shards and all the blood on the grass. "Damn, my lab coat is ruined too."

Ebony's POV:

"So, how long have you been here, Thistle?" I asked.

"I'm not so sure. My owner has been taking care of me ever since I opened my eyes," Thistle replied, his eyes shimmering. "Well, what about you?" He asked.

I looked away, avoiding the raptor's gaze. "Well, I had an owner before," I mumbled. "She was nice and protected me, and I protected her. But then they came, and took me away from her. I grew up in cage, sealed away from life for two years. Eventually I escaped that torture and ran away. I'm still searching for my owner, but I can't find her," I whined,  looking down.

Thistle flashed me a sympathetic look. "I'm sorry that happened to you," he whispered, his tail drooping.

Feather rested the tip of his feathery tail on my shoulders. "I still miss Fear," he murmured, closing his eyes and letting out a sigh.

I could feel grief clawing at my heart at the mention of Fear. He died so young, and in a terrible way too.

"Who is Fear?" Thistle asked, lifting his tail. He could see the saddened look in our eyes. "Uh, maybe I shouldn't ask. I'm sorry," he murmured.

"I-It's fine, don't be sorry," I stammered. "Fear was a hybrid that I was taking care of, along with his siblings Feather and Cilo," I explained. "I found them as eggs and decided to take care of them."

"I hope you don't mind me asking. But.. did Fear.... die?" Thistle asked, stepping forward.

"Raptors ambushed us and I was away from the baby hybrids. When I came back, Fear was dead. I'll never forgive myself for that," I sighed.

"It's not your fault," Thistle murmured.

"Uh, I'm going to go hunt for some food," Feather mumbled, walking off slowly. I watched as he walked down the hall, his claws clicking on the wood. Then he soon disappeared out the doorway.

"I'm going to take a nap," Thistle rasped, walking over to the ripped couch. He crawled onto it and curled up, his back facing me.

I turned away, slowly walking towards the torn up rug on the floor that I slept on. I curled up on it, closing my eyes and allowing darkness to swallow my vision.

Ok finally I'm done with the chapter, now I can watch Tokyo Ghoul in peace.
