Chapter 98
At this point Aurora had shot straight out of bed, having heard the chair clatter to the floor. Once she gathered herself, she regretted the sudden action. She grumbled and slid out of the bed, rubbing at her eyes. "What was that about..?"
Kade turned to her. "Oh- I'm sorry- I didn't mean to wake you- Um-" She stopped realizing she didn't get the man's name. "A lady named Claire just brought a man in and he looked to be in pretty bad shape-" She tried to explain.
"Claire's here?" Aurora asked tiredly. She assumed it was Claire and Matt, considering she didn't think Tony knew any other Claire, let alone would he let any random Claire onto this floor of the tower. "What happened to the man?"
"She didn't say. Something about it being a long story. He looked pretty pale and shaken up though..." Kade replied. "You know them?"
"Yeah, they helped me out a bit when me and Tony were over in Hell's Kitchen." She didn't want to reveal too much about them. Leaning against the bed, she stifled a yawn. "Sorry for trauma dumping on you earlier, I think everything got to my head."
"It's alright. You needed to process. I'm happy to help with that." She replied with a small smile but glanced back at the door. "I just hope they're okay. She didn't look super great either..."
Aurora frowned and looked up at the doctor. "Is it okay if I walk around a bit? I'd like to check in on everybody if that's alright." She wanted to ask first to make sure it was okay.
She nodded. "Just take it slow but yeah. I'm fine with that." She agreed. "It's good for you to stretch your legs some as long as you're careful."
"I'll be sure to be careful, thank you." She straightened out her clothes and ran a hand through her hair, heading out into the hallway. First, she'd pop in on Claire to see what was happening. Then maybe she'd try to find Tony. After all, if Claire and Matt were here, there was a good chance Kasey was too, and she'd be with Tony and the room.
When she knocked on the door to the room Kade had told her they were in, Claire answered her. "One minute!" She could hear her putting something aside and moving things around before coming over and opening the door slightly but relaxed a bit when she saw Aurora.
"O-Oh- Hi-" She looked a bit out of breath and frazzled and she held the door open just enough for Aurora to see her standing there but she couldn't see Matt.
Aura was a little confused at all the movement she was hearing, but shook the thought away. She shifted on her feet before speaking. "You guys okay? Dr. Kade said you guys came by in a rush, and didn't look too good. I wanted to check in on you two."
"Oh, uh..." She glanced back at what Aurora assumed was Matt but even she could hear the erratic as hell beeping from the heart monitor that suddenly kicked in.
"SHIT!" Claire ran over to him, trying to figure out what the hell was going on with him. He wasn't glitching so why?!
"What the-" Aurora pushed the door open a little wider, peeking into the room. She was shocked to see Matt, looking like he was on death's doorstep. "What happened??"
Matt's heart was going crazy, the stress on his body increasing to dangerous levels. It was like his body was trying to reject itself, and mend itself all at once.
"Long story short-" Claire was darting around trying to figure out how to calm him the heck down and get him stable. "He went into the room Kasey was in and glitched multiple times-" She explained, placing a cold cloth on his forehead, hoping it would help and it did seem to bring them down from the threat of flatlining but only just. It was still fluxing out of control.
"What? That was a terrible idea!!" Aurora exclaimed, keeping to her current spot. She didn't want to go in and get in Claire's way as she tended to Matt. The heart monitor continued to jump and stutter, although it somewhat lessened than before. "Is there anything I can do to help?"
"Yeah, well, he apparently didn't care about what happened to himself as long as he made sure Kasey was okay." She replied, trying to figure out what to do.
"Honestly? I don't know- I've never seen anything like this-" She replied. "We need to bring it to a steady consistency-"
Although it had been lessened only moments before, his heart rate once again dipped way below what was normal for him. At this point, it seemed his body was creating a fever to fight off his own glitched in genes.
"Oh crap-" Aurora sucked in a sharp breath, seeing the heart rate go down. She hoped for his recovery, for Kasey's sake.
Claire swore and turned to Aurora. "Can you get an ice pack? I need something to help take his fever down." She told her as she monitored his heart beat closely, fearful that it might just stop.
"Yeah!" Aurora stepped into the room and went over to one of the med tables, which held a small cooler atop of it. She fished out an ice pack, and brought it over to Claire. "Here."
Matt groaned, another small glitch rippling through him. Almost immediately after, his heartbeat began to increase, getting a little closer to normal. It might've not been noticeable, but it seemed to take on a slightly altered rhythm.
"Thank you." She wrapped it in some cloth and placed it on his forehead with a soft frown, looking up at the monitor. It seemed to be stabilizing. That's good...
She sighed softly. "I don't know how long this will last..."
"Hopefully not too long. It looks too painful..." Aurora's eyes were kept on the monitor, as she watched it suddenly. evened out? Her spider senses spiked, and she quickly stepped back from the table before she could even register why.
Before Claire was able to pull her hand back from him completely, Matt's hand shot up, squeezing her wrist in a death grip. He used his other hand to swiftly push himself up, so he was sitting up. Although he was still blind, there was something sinister behind his eyes.
Claire's heart nearly leaped out of her chest. "WHAT THE HELL-?! Matt?! What are you doing?! That hurts!"
She tried to pull free of him but his grip was strong and tight.
Matt weakened his grip, only for a moment as another glitch shot through him. He gasped and tried to catch his breath, before snapping his head towards Claire. "What the hell are you doing to me?" Of course he'd pin this on the nearest person. Then again the cues of the room also told him he was in some sort of medical room.
Aurora blinked, and she could've sworn Matt's hair was darker than that. She leaned to the side, looking at the back of his head, where the bottom portion of his hair was seemingly red.
Claire was frightened as she tried and failed to pull away again. "What do you mean?! I've been trying to stabilize you!" She replied, noticing the slight change to Matt's hair as well but she was a bit preoccupied.
He tilted his head, not in the way that they were used to with their Matt, but in an almost predatory manner. It seemed that she wasn't lying, but that didn't answer anything. He began to twist her wrist. "Where am I, and what do you mean stabilize?"
"Stop, you're going to hurt her!" Aurora shouted, coming around the other side of the bed to help.
Claire cried out in pain, tears spilling down her face. "Matt, please! Stop! That hurts!" She begged him to let go, still unable to pull away. "You're at the tower! And you were glitching, remember??" She desperately tried to get him to stop, to calm down, to let her go.
This wasn't like him.
"The tower? Glitching?" He sneered, thinking they were playing him for some kind of fool. "I have no idea what you're talking about." He didn't know who this woman was, or the teen for that matter.
Claire stared at him, studying his expression, her heart racing as she didn't recognize the look behind his blind eyes or the tone to his voice.
"M-matt-? P-please- you're scaring me-" She tried to pull loose. "You're at the Avengers tower- you were trying to help Kasey and you went into that damn room and started glitching the hell out- please! This isn't you!" She pleaded with him.
Matt's sneer curled downward, into more of a snarl. She was telling the truth, but he was beginning to doubt his own abilities. None of that could be true! He had just been interrogating a pesky little rat-
Pain shot through him and he convulsed, his muscles tightening. This, of course, caused his grip on Clair's arm to increase nearly tenfold.
Claire screamed in pain as she felt the bones in her wrist crack under the pressure. "Damn it, Matt!! Let go!" She begged him, tears flowing down her face as she finally pulled free and stumbled back with a shaky gasp, clutching her wrist close to her chest.
She was visibly shaking now, thoroughly terrified by what was happening.
Once the glitches had ripped their way through him, he came out on top, looking more frazzled than ever. He panted heavily, heaving every breath greedily. He looked nearly wild, and it quickly made sense why.
Small glitches rippled over him, each time showing something different. As they slowed and weakened, the Matt that was left behind was very obviously the wrong one.
