Chapter 102
Matt could hear Peter and Aurora's heartbeats, one he didn't know, and then Kasey's suppressed one.
Seems Claire hadn't made her way over yet.
Matt was disappointed not to hear Claire's heartbeat, but figured she must've been on her way at least. He never even fathomed that his other version might've scared her off from himself.
Tony led him over to Kasey who was sound asleep on one of the beds.
As Matt got closer, he noticed how clear she sounded. She sounded the most... normal he had ever heard her.
Matt came over, locating a chair and pulling it up besides the bed. "She sounds so... peaceful. I can't hear any distortions." At this point, Tony knew a bunch about them anyway, and Matt basically trusted him not to say anything to anyone else.
Tony smiled a bit at that. "I have Friday keeping track of how long she goes without one, but I'm hopeful." He replied.
Kasey slightly shifted when she heard Matt's voice and slowly stirred. "Matt??" She mumbled tiredly.
Matt smiled, reaching out to take her hand once again. "Hey there kiddo. How are you feeling?"
"I..." she stopped to think for a minute and realized how... how stable she felt. She looked up towards him. "Did it work? I don't... I feel... normal?" She sounded a bit confused but not in a bad way.
"Tony says he's going to keep monitoring you, but from what I can hear, things are going smoothly so far." Matt explained, a joyous uplift in his tone.
She sat up carefully as Tony came over with a smile. "Friday says you're still tracking as fully stable and it's been about fifteen minutes since we removed you from the room."
Kasey felt tears start to drip down her face. "I-really?" She asked hopefully.
Tony nodded. "Yeah, kid. So if you can go a few hours like that, hell, even a day? I'd say it worked pretty spectacularly."
Matt gave her hand a light squeeze. "I think you'll be okay. But for now, we should probably stay here until we know for sure." He turned back to Tony for his thoughts on the idea.
This might be the safest place for them right now. Especially Kasey.
Tony nodded in agreement. "I think so too. Just in case something happens."
Kasey seemed hesitant with the idea, wanting to go back with Matt but nodded. "O-okay."
Matt heard footsteps enter the room then stop and he heard a familiar heartbeat skip a beat.
"Claire." Matt's ears perked up, and he turned towards Claire. He was relieved to hear she was even up and moving. He had assumed the worst, when he realized just how evil the other him was. He patted Kasey's hand a couple times before getting up and stepping towards Claire.
However, he heard her step back, and her heartbeat increase and a quiet but sharp shaky inhale came from her.
She was scared.
Of him.
Matt stopped, an expression of confusion crossing his face, followed by an expression of clarity. He must've been right, at least somewhat. That other version did something to her. It pained him to hear her so scared of him.
"Claire-" He didn't know how to begin. "I'm so sorry. But it's me. Not that other version of me."
Aurora had been more focused on staying with Peter and Dr. Kade. Sure, she still kept a watchful eye on Matt, but she also wanted to stay with these two in case the glitch trade happened again.
She seemed hesitant to believe him, her right hand holding her left wrist in front of her chest as she watched him closely. She glanced at Tony who gave her a firm nod to confirm what Matt was saying.
And he knew her name, unlike the other one.
She hesitated before finally speaking up. "M-Matt?" Her voice was quiet and uncertain and her body language told him how reluctant she was to trust him, even with Tony's assurance.
Ouch. Another pain stabbed through him. She sounded so hesitant, and he was upset by it. "What did he do?"
His voice was shaky, although he couldn't tell if it was from anger or pure agitation. "That never should've happened."
He heard her flinch back away from him at the sound of his tone, slightly shaking as she did.
Tony winced when he saw that and carefully approached Matt, gently placing a hand on his good shoulder but talking to Claire. "Do you want me to explain?" He asked her.
She hesitated but gave a small nod that Matt almost didn't notice.
Tony nodded back at her and stepped to face Matt better. "She and Interweb were the first ones to interact with them and they haven't really told me what happened before they got to me but they were running from him. Webs stumbled but Claire kept him from grabbing hold of her but was grabbed instead," He explained to him.
Claire was tense as Tony retold the events to him, shaking a bit more.
"He-" He hesitated before sighing. "He held her hostage. She tried to knock him out by hitting his jaw but he avoided it. He-" He stopped seeing the way Claire was just shaking.
"Kade, can you help her?" He called over and Kade hurried over and put a blanket on her shoulders and led her over to one of the beds to check on her while they talked.
He lowered his voice back down. "He put a- a knife to her back... He... He seemed to be amused by the situation more than anything... Acted like he was toying with us..." He shook his head slightly. "He was taunting her with the blade on her back before he attempted to use her as a ticket out of here but I locked the building down before he could get anywhere. He let her go in order to try to escape but he didn't."
Tony shifted a bit. "He put up a hell of a fight though... Got ahold of Spidey and tried to use him against us too but after I explained the situation he finally gave in and cooperated. Well... mostly." He shrugged slightly but watched Matt's expressions.
As Tony retold the story to him, Matt's expression was a mix of horror, shock, and anger. If they weren't separated by universes, he would've gone off to beat the other Murdock into a bloody pulp. Playing games with them like that? Scaring Claire so badly that she's scared of the real him? He wished he could scare the other Murdock just as badly.
"I didn't know-" Matt shook his head. "People in his universe were scared of him too. He was some sort of crime boss, or something akin to one." He ran a hand through his hair in exasperation, turning towards Claire. He wanted to check on her, but he didn't want to scare her off either.
Aurora stayed out when Kade went to help Claire. She couldn't help but think of that devilish look she had seen back in the hallway.
"Yeah, I'd believe that." He replied. "He chased them down the hall... It was kinda terrifying that he could move that fast without problems despite being blind." He noted. "But I assume you can do that too, can't you?" He had lowered his voice, knowing he may not want the spiderlings knowing too much yet.
Matt turned back to Tony, knowing it wouldn't have been long before he figured it out anyway. Whether or not he knew the full truth... Well, Matt would play the safe route. He spoke in an equally low voice. "You could say I'm enhanced-"
"I kinda figured when you mentioned her heartbeat." He noted. "So clearly some of your senses as least, well... obviously not sight," He chuckled faintly. "But no healing factor, I assume since you are still healing?"
Matt nodded, the pain in his leg still thrumming steadily. It was still less than before, which he was grateful for. "Yeah, no healing factor unfortunately."
"Is it just your senses then?" He asked curiously, glancing over at Claire and Kade who were quietly talking. Well. Kade was talking to Claire but Claire wasn't saying much.
He nodded again. It was weird, actually talking about his senses with someone. "Just the senses." He repeated, turning towards the two.
"Huh." He noticed Kade coming over to them. "How is she?"
"Well, as you can tell, she's pretty shaken up and has good reason to be. Apparently when he first woke up, he had grabbed her wrist and when he glitched he tightened his grip to the point of breaking it..." She explained, glancing down at her little clipboard.
Matt felt instant guilt. He knew he wasn't the one that had broken her wrist, but it still was a man with his name, and as far as he knew, his face. "He broke her wrist..? Can I talk to her?"
"Well... That's not all." She replied. "The knife he had against her back cut through her shirt and it broke skin in two places. Not anything that caused massive damage but might still leave a mark... It wouldn't be very noticeable if it does, but... still."
That filled him with rage. So now his jackass impersonator was possibly scarring her? He cursed under his breath and crossed his arms, pulling one up to pinch the bridge of his nose. How could another version of him be so evil?? What did that mean for him?
Tony put a hand on his shoulder. "I know you want to talk to her and check on her but it might be better for both of you to wait a bit longer." He suggested.
"I think-" Matt paused and composed himself. "I think you're right. I don't want to scare her more than she already is." He sounded defeated. At least Kasey was spared from encountering this 'other self'.
Speaking of- "I'm confused?" Kasey spoke up, drawing their attention as her head was tilted to the side. "What happened???"
Right. She had been out for all of that. "There was a complication due to the glitching. It got pretty bad for me, and somehow I switched places with another version of me."
"Wait- what?" She asked in surprise. "There was another you here?? And you switched places??"
Tony sighed. "Yeah, it was a whole thing."
"Why haven't I done that?" She asked.
Tony blinked. "Huh... good question..."
"Maybe because you're not from here originally?" Matt offered, having no real solution to the question. "I don't know. But I wouldn't recommend it. The guy that came through... was something else."
Kasey shrugged. "Maybe???" She replied. "But... you said he hurt Claire??" She sounded confused.
Matt would never!
"He did. Whoever that version was, he must've been the bottom of the barrel." Matt spoke sourly.
She frowned, processing that. She knew Matt could do something like that but only to bad guys. It just... it was confusing to think about. "Is she okay?"
Matt went quiet for a moment. He didn't know if he could answer that. "She's scared."
Kasey nodded slightly. "Makes sense... it sounds scary..." she hesitated before carefully getting up and when she found she was stable, she came over to Matt and hugged him tight. "But listening to you glitch out scared me too..."
Matt was a bit surprised at the action. "Kasey, you should be resting-" He gave up trying to convince her and instead wrapped his arms around her. "I couldn't leave you in there by yourself."
"All I've done for the past week or so is rest. I feel fine. I promise." She told him, staying pressed against him. "Just promise me you won't do that again? At least, not unless you absolutely have to?"
Matt hesitated, but let out a tired sigh. "Okay, I promise." He kept his arms around her, but turned his head towards Tony. "I think I'm going to wait somewhere else, until Claire's ready." He nudged Kasey. "You can come with, or check in with your friends."
She seemed to hesitate for a moment before looking at Tony. "Take him to the living room and I'll be there in a bit."
Tony chuckled softly. "Alright." He agreed and watched her quickly but carefully dash over to Aurora and Peter who was finally starting to come around again.
Matt listened to Kasey leave them, before turning and following Tony's lead.
Aurora looked up, glad to see Kasey feeling better. Not only that, but she looked better too. "Glad to see you up and moving around."
She smiled brightly at her. "So am I!" She replied as she came over. "Are you two okay after everything?" She asked.
Peter blinked awake, letting his eyes try to refocus. "A-Aura??" He mumbled, his voice breathy.
Kasey tilted her head in confusion. "P-peter?" She asked. Something sounded wrong...
"I'm fine but-" She heard Peter and frowned. "He got hit while we were on the ceiling, and fell on his head." She explained.
"Peter, you hit your head pretty hard. You okay?" Aurora spoke softly, holding one of his hands as she waited for his answer. All of this was mentally exhausting.
Peter started to nod but winced as he blinked awake more. "Yeah. I'll be okay." He signed back.
Kasey heard his hands moving but why wasn't he responding?
Aurora looked between Kasey and Peter, a realization hitting her. "Crap-" She found Peter's phone and held it out for him, before looking back to Kasey.
"Sorry Kasey. When that alley fight happened, one of the guys had some weird blades. Damaged Peter's vocal chords pretty badly." She didn't delve into everything that had happened, something in her mind stopping her from spilling all of it again.
"Wait, they what-" She asked, her eyes widening in surprise.
"Yeah, I'm sorry we weren't able to tell you sooner. We tried to call Atlas but you were asleep then things got kinda crazy again-" Peter's phone spoke, making Kasey's head tilt again.
"That's horrible! Will it heal?" She asked in concern.
"Dr. Kade, the woman that was working with Claire earlier, said that it's going to heal really slowly. Something on that blade has some sort of anti-healing agent, which blocks our enhanced healing." Aurora explained, motioning to her back. "Got a jab during Tony and I's last excursion."
She "glanced" between them both. "But I thought they wanted us?" She sounded confused. "Yet it sounds like they're making stuff to kill us..."
A pained look crossed Aurora's face. They had made it perfectly clear to her enough times for it to really stick with her. "They only need one of us alive."
She turned to Aurora with concern in her eyes. "And yet you two have been suffering because of them because of me..." She frowned, looking away but Peter snatched her wrist.
"No." He verbally replied before typing. "It's because they're power hungry. They'd be after us whether you ever came here or not."
"Don't you dare blame yourself for this Kasey. They're the reason for all our suffering. Don't you forget that they wronged you too, and most of all really." Aurora pointed out. She didn't want her friend to fall victim to her own self blaming. "This isn't because of you."
"They would have come for us eventually." Peter added.
Kasey sighed and nodded. "You're right... I just... it seems anyone I hang around gets a target on their back too..."
"That's why we should stay here for the time being. We need to heal up, and make a plan to take that corporation down. A proper one." Aurora told her.
"I know you didn't want to be holed up and all that, but we need to stick together. Now more than ever."
She hesitated before nodding again. "Matt thought the same thing. He and Tony think it's best for me to stay here for a while."
"It might be the safest place right now. I don't think they can reach us here, and we have the stabilization room just in case." Aurora continued. She had to admit, it was nice to have them all together again.
"Yeah... I just-" She hesitated, deciding against it. "Yeah..."
Peter tilted his head at her, slightly confused. "What?"
"I-It's fine... It's not important." She replied, brushing him off.
Aurora glanced at Kasey, watching her for a couple seconds. "Kasey, what were you thinking about?"
"It's-" She stopped before sighing. "I didn't want to leave..." She mumbled. "I know that I had to and that's fine! But-... I expected to go back..."
"To Matt's apartment? I'm sure you'll be able to, but we need to figure this whole thing out first." Aurora reassured her. "It's just not safe to be within a few blocks of that place. You step one foot outside and next thing you know they've got you."
"Yeah..." She agreed softly. "It's just... frustrating..." She huffed.
Peter gave her a soft smile. "I get it but I'm sure once we figure this out then he'd be more than happy to have you go back over."
"Plus, at least for a little while, the gang's back together! We can try and make the most of it." Aurora grinned. She wanted Kasey to feel welcome there, even if it was temporary.
She smiled a bit at that. "Yeah." She agreed. "It'll be nice to just... hang out again."
Peter nodded with a grin before noticing Claire getting up and heading out of the room. "Where's she going?" He asked.
Kasey noticed her leaving and frowned a bit. "I... I'm not sure..."
Aurora watched her get up and leave, being curious but also not willing to leave her friends. "Maybe to mend things?"
Kasey frowned a little deeper. "I hope so but... I'm not sure she's ready."
"From what I've seen between those two, they're like peanut butter and jelly. I don't think they'd be able to be apart for too long." Aurora observed with a small shrug.
Kasey chuckled softly. "They are." She agreed. "They... They remind me of my parents sometimes..."
Aurora smiled over at Kasey. "I'm glad you enjoy being with them. If it makes you happy, then it makes me happy."
She turned to Aurora, a bit surprised by that.
"Same here. It really does make us happy to see you opening up and exploring outside your comfort zone."
Kasey smiled a bit more tearfully at that. "Thanks you guys..."
"We'll miss you, of course, don't think it'll be the same without you around here. I guess I'll just have to double down on annoying Tony to make up for it." She laughed lightly.
Kasey laughed at that too. "I'm sure he'll love that." She grinned.
Peter chuckled softly. "Oh, yeah, he will absolutely love that."
Aurora's laugh soon calmed down, and she thought of something a bit more serious. "We've decided on no more secrets between us two-" She alluded to Peter and herself. "Would you join in on that?"
Kasey blinked and hesitated. Well... Aurora already knew and she assumed Peter probably would've found out too so she nodded. "I will. But there are some things I can't share since they aren't mine to share." She added.
Peter nodded. "That's fair. Just our own things." He agreed.
Aurora was hesitant but nodded nonetheless. "I can live with that. As long as we say what matters." Also, as long as Aurora remembered to tell them.
"You wanna take a seat then and let me fill you two in?" She offered.
Peter blinked in surprise and looked at Aurora.
Aurora exchanged an interested look with Peter, before shrugging. "Sure. I don't see why not." It seemed like a good time for it, after all they didn't have anywhere to be. She went off and grabbed two chairs, one for herself and one for Kasey.
Kasey thanked her and sat down before sighing softly. "What do you guys know so far?" She asked.
Peter continued to communicate through his phone. "The only thing I've gathered so far is something about a multiverse?"
Aurora nodded, adding onto what Peter had said. "We took a peek at Tony's file, and I heard quite a bit when I followed him over to Hell's Kitchen after Matt called him."
Kasey nodded. "Well... As I'm sure you've realized from that other Matt apparently- The multiverse is a thing... And I'm not from this universe." She explained.
"We didn't know until I had Tony read that other file... Then things just seemed to go downhill from there..." She sighed.
She tried to think of what else to say. "O-Oh, um, I'm being trained by Daredevil now so that's neat- We haven't done a whole lot yet cause ya know- glitching makes that hard-"
Peter listened, trying to absorb as much information as he could. Of course, his brain kind of got stuck on the 'Kasey being from another universe' part and had to race to get back on track. "You aren't from here?"
Aurora, having known the whole multiverse thing, was caught up on another matter. "You're being trained by Daredevil?"
She chuckled. "Yes and yes." She replied. "There's, uh... actually another version, this universe's version, of me here too..." she explained. "I, uh... I've met her kind of."
Both Peter and Aurora broke out a resounding "What?!" The mere thought of another version of Kasey being on their world hadn't occurred to them.
"Yeah- It was... It wasn't a great revelation at the time..." She admitted, rubbing the back of her head.
"It's... It's still not..."
"Well, what matters is that you're you." Peter told her. He didn't know just what it was about the other 'Kasey' that had upset her.
She smiled a bit at that and nodded. "Yeah... As for training with Daredevil, he's trying to help me control my impulses and what not." She explained.
"Sounds like the guy is better than I thought." Aurora thought aloud.
"Can't really blame you though. With the name, the suit, and his track record? Guy comes off as a menace." Peter nodded.
Kasey snorted a bit at that. "Says "the Spider-menace"." She teased him.
"But no, he's... He's good. I promise." She replied with a smile.
"Okay that's different cause that's a straight up lie-" Peter started.
"As long as he's good. And if he's helping you, then who am I to dislike him." Aurora shrugged and leaned back in the chair, relaxing against it.
Kasey laughed a bit at Peter. "So is some of the stuff they say about Daredevil," She pointed out.
"He may take a rougher path to dealing with criminals, but at this point, after experiencing crime in Hell's kitchen first hand? Yeah, it's warranted."
Peter paused, before typing something short into his phone. "Fair."
Aurora nodded along. "Yeah. I think it is. Especially over there, where there's guys literally trying to dissect us." Hell, with how many times she'd been stabbed she felt like she was halfway there.
Kasey nodded. "He's working on trying to help out with that too." She told them.
It was technically true.
"Well that's good. It's nice to know there's someone else on our side." Aurora spoke up.
"I don't know if you can say or not, but is he looking into that now? I haven't heard anything about him for the past couple days." Peter had been resting and whatnot, so scrolling through news articles and stuff had kept him occupied.
Kasey shrugged. "Kind of? He is pretty busy with all kinds of things." She pointed out. "But he's trying."
"I guess that makes sense. He's only one guy after all." Peter nodded, Kasey's answer having been sufficient for him.
Kasey nodded at that. "And yet somehow micromanaging the heck out of Hell's Kitchen."
"Yeah he really likes that, what, ten blocks? Of New York." Aurora commented with a snicker.
Kasey giggled. "He does seem to like it a lot." Granted, she had some context as to why that they didn't have.
"I don't think I've heard anything about him outside of Hells Kitchen." Peter spoke up.
"To be fair, I rarely hear about you going outside Queens." Aurora teased him.
"She has a point!" Kasey laughed. "New York is too big to fully patrol for any one person-"
"Hey, Queens is a big area!" Peter tried defending himself in vain.
"Daredevil also doesn't have anyone to help him over there, at least, he didn't until Kasey came along." Aurora grinned. "Maybe you'll tame the devil." She joked.
Kasey laughed, thinking back to the past couple days. "Yeah, maybe." She agreed.
"Let us know if you do. It'd be fun to come over and antagonize him again." She jested. After all, they had barely fought the first time they met.
She snorted. "And get your asses handed to you?" She teased her back.
"Hey we were doing pretty good against him last time!" Aurora laughed.
"I'll admit I was hesitant to fight him, but he wasn't too hard." Peter told her. Little did either of them know, Matt was barely trying.
"Uh huh. Sure. Like he'd just use his full force against two tennagers." She pointed out.
"I've witnessed him fight when he's not holding back. You would've had a much harder time."
"You're telling me he was pulling his punches?" Aurora asked. That was pretty unbelievable.
"Oh. I mean, would he be able to take on both of us?" Peter tried, rethinking their idea to spar with the guy.
Kasey chuckled. "I don't know. Maybe." She replied. "He mostly relies on stealth when outnumbered I think."
"Well we can figure something out while we're holed up here." Aurora sighed out. She would appreciate the healing time, especially since her healing factor wasn't helping her back at all. That, and Peter seemed to be having the worst luck lately.
"That guy is an enigma and a half." Peter shook his head lightly, but quickly cut that action short.
Kasey found it rather amusing that they wanted to fight with Matt so badly and yet were so confused about him.
Granted, context did help a lot.
"That's true I suppose. But don't expect me to give you anymore help." She grinned.
"Yeah, that probably wouldn't go over well with big red." Aurora waved a dismissive hand. Plus, she viewed it as a sort of cheat if they had inside information.
She nodded with a bit of a smirk. "He called Peter Spider-kid once-"
Peter took great offense to that. "What?! That's not even my name-" Even through text, it was still a whiny complaint.
Aurora snorted, finding it hilarious. "How'd he know that anyway?"
"Well for starters, you both sound like teenagers-" She teased them.
"Okay, first off, rude." Came Peter's answer from his phone. "Secondly, you're a teenager too, you know."
She laughed. "I'm aware. But you asked! I simply gave you an answer! I never said you'd like it!"
The three ended up chatting until they were too exhausted to continue, giggling tiredly.
Kade sighed when she came over. "Go to bed, you three."
"Awww but Kadeeeee-" Kasey whined.
"No. Bed. Now."
"Fineeeeee-" She moved over to one of the empty beds and plopped down into it and curled up. "sleepover in the medbayyyyy-"
Aurora stifled a tired yawn and laughed at Kasey's reaction. She didn't protest, moving over to the bed she had previously occupied. She didn't have the energy to move all the way back to her guest room, nor did she want to leave the two of them here.
"'Night." She mumbled, pulling the thin cover over herself.
Peter would've chuckled, if his throat hadn't been so sore from their previous laughing fits. But he welcomed rest, curling up in the bed he was already in.
