That Day in July...
This is going to be a one chapter because it's a short story and this was an idea I thought so I put together this! ^.^ Hope you guys enjoy!!!
====================================================
It was a cool summer day in July. Two identical looking children, twins, walked across the rocky shore of the river that flowed endlessly downstream. The brother, Sam, is a young boy who is very shy and cautious. The sister, Emily, on other hand, is an energetic, adventurous girl. Sam is a pretty good rock skipper and Emily often tell him to skip a rock to attempt to break his record. Sam threw his second rock and it skipped 5 times. Emily was amazed by what her brother can do.
"Sam do it again! Beat your record!"
Sam looked at Emily, disappointed, and said, "Sorry, 5 skips is the furthest I ever had. I don't think I could skip more than that."
"Awww....why not?" Emily whined, "You can do it! I know you can do it! So do it now!" Sam was annoyed by Emily's whining and wanted to put an end to it.
"Ugh fine..." Sam said in defeat.
"Yay!" Emily cheered as she jumped up and down.
Sam got into his stance, curved his wrist, and released his wrist! The rock was then launched into the river where it was skipped. He counted how many times it skipped. 1...2...3...4...5...6...7...8..! 8 skips! He beat his record! Emily was astonished by the many times it skipped. But right before they celebrated, something strange happened...
For some reason, the rock came skipping back. 1...2...3...4...5...6...7...8...! 8 times! It was the same as Sam! He became cautious about the situation while his sister was amazed by this phenomenon.
"Hey, why did the rock came back?" Emily was interested by this strange event.
"I don't know.." Sam muttered.
"Throw the rock again! Let's check if it's real or not." Emily hypothesized.
"No!" Sam yelled at Emily, afraid, "What just happened was weird and I don't want that to happen again! It was creepy..."
Instead of looking scared, Emily just smirked at Sam evilly. "So what you're saying is that...you...are...scared? Teehee..."
Sam suddenly raged with anger yet blushed at the same time. "I am NOT scared IDIOT!!!"
"Doesn't seem like it. Hehehe..." Emily chuckled.
"Oh shut it...."
Then Emily looked at Sam with an irritated expression, "So are you going to throw it or not?" while having her arms crossed.
"I will, I will geesh..." Sam then skipped the rock, once again, into the river. Also, as before, it skipped back again.
"Woah..." Emily was full of amazement, "It came back again..."
"Well..." Sam mumbled under his breath, "What if it's a..."
Emily looked at him, confused. "It's a what?" Sam's expression looked terrified. "a ghost...What if it's a ghost?!?"
*gurgle* *gurgle*
Suddenly a whirlpool began to form near the shore of the river. Then a ghostly figure started to come out of it. You can even see through it!
"Look at that Sam!" Emily pointed at the whirlpool.
"uh..." Sam said dumbfounded, "What the heck is that?"
The ghostly figure finally came out of the whirlpool. It seemed that it's a ghost with it levitating above the pool. The two of them stared at it and yelled, "LET'S GO!!!"
One ran towards the river, where the figure was at, and another towards their home.
"And where do you think you're going?" Emily scolded Sam.
"uhhh..." Sam muttered, "B-back home...."
Emily face-planted with her hand, "You're so pathetic....What in the world am I going to do with you...?"
SPLASH!
The figure suddenly fell into the river without defying gravity as before. The figure's appearance seem to look like a young girl, maybe the same age as Sam and Emily.
"I have to help her!" Emily cried out running towards the girl.
"Wait!" Sam grabbed her wrist with a strong grip, "What if it's dangerous? I think you should stay away..."
Emily took Sam's hand off of her wrist and held her fist up to look tough. "It's not dangerous! I'll protect you because I'm strong! Don't worry about me!"
"Ok..." Sam said, unsure, "Whatever you say..."
"I am going to help the person!"
Emily slowly walked up to the mysterious person. She noticed that this person had long hair so she assumed it was a girl. She kneeled next to the girl and asked her if she was ok. The girl suddenly stood up and ran over to the shore. She then shook away the water, just like what dogs do when they get wet. Emily started to become very fond of this strange girl. The girl looked like she was finally settled down.
"Are you ok?" Emily asked as she approached the girl.
"I..." She muttered. Sam stood behind Emily, using her as a shield.
"Hey, I think we should-"
"I am fine. Thanks for being concerned." said the mysterious girl.
"Wahh...soo cute..." Emily quietly said to herself.
Emily finally settled herself down and closely observed the girl. She seem to have long white hair that reaches her back. Which was kind of odd... She had blue eyes which looked like it was the sky. The type of clothing she's wearing is a long white dress where it almost reaches her ankles, which is pretty long. Also, Emily thought it was strange she was bare-footed and surprised that the rocks don't bother the girl at all.
"What are you?" Emily asked wondering.
Sam starts to tug at Emily's sleeve. "You don't just ask people what they are, well in this case...she isn't a human..."
"Well...to be honest..." the girl said with her hands behind, "I am a spirit, the spirit of this forest."
"SPIRIT?!?!" Sam and Emily yelled out together.
"Then you're a g-ghost?!?" Sam said as hiding behind Emily.
"In a way, yes" Emily said as chuckling to herself, "But actually I am a..."
POOF!
"...fox..."
The mythical creature appeared before Sam and Emily and they were astonished.... The fox spirit looked exactly like a fox. The creature had the same characteristics as the girl before, blue eyes and white hair, which in this case, is white fur.
"You're a fox?!? And you can talk?!?" Sam yelled out, "Even when you're in your fox form?"
"Haha yes!" the fox cheerfully said.
"I don't care what she is, she's soo cute!!!" Emily grabbed the fox and started to cuddle and hug her.
"Hey I have been wondering for a while..." the fox said, "Do all humans look alike like you two?"
"Well...you see..." Sam said, "No...it's just that we were born at the same time."
"Oh...I see...Hey how about I show you around the forest?"
"Sure!" Emily agreed.
"I guess that's ok..." Sam acted neutral to the idea.
"So...on to our adventure!" the fox cheered as marching onto the forest.
The three youngsters entered the forest and explored its many secrets. They followed a trail, which along the way, met many critters of the forest. There was a deer family, which there was a mother and 3 fawns. It seemed the family was treating the fox as a queen because the doe and fawns was kneeling to her.
"Wow, why are they kneeling before you?" Emily was amazed by the reaction of the family.
"Well it's because I am the spirit of this forest so the animals that live here treat me as their queen. It's like I am their guardian because I have the power to grow plants for them to eat and give peace among the creatures."
"Wow..." Sam stared at her in utter amazement, "You are so amazing!"
The fox scratched her ear and blushed. "Why thank you! Heh heh...Actually there's a place I want to show you for thanking you that you talked to me and not trying to hunt me."
"What?" Emily was in shock, "Who will ever try to hunt you?"
"Fox hunters...they'll especially go for the rare looking ones, like me...They already took all of my family, I am the last one left to take care of the forest." The fox said in a sadden tone.
"Hey..." Emily looked at her with sorrowful eyes, "We are here for you, even though you don't know anything about us, We will still be there for you."
"Yeah..whatever it takes to make you happy." Sam shyly said as looking down at his feet.
*sniffle*
"Thanks you guys..." The fox said as she settled down, "I owe you one...Oh yeah! I was going to show you the plains!"
"Plains?" The twins questioned as both tilted their head.
"Yes plains!" the fox cheered, "Follow me to find out what the "plains" is."
"Ok! Lead the way!" Emily boosted with excitement. "Onward to our adventure again!"
The three children continued on their ongoing adventure to seek out the "plains", the fox mentioned. They went through many obstacles along the way like crossing the river, walking across a fallen tree over a tree, and almost falling into a ditch. After walking for sometime, the three decided to take a break on a log, with a small stream flowing by. They drank the water from the stream to fulfill their thirst.
*rustle* *rustle*
The fox jumped and ran over to the log they were sitting at earlier. "What was that?!?"
"Was what?" Emily asked in confusion.
"N-nothing...I guess I was hearing things..." the fox said as she reassured herself, "Let us continue on this path and we'll be at the Plains!"
[After 5 mins of walking]
"Here we are, the Plains! But the trip isn't over yet!" The fox showed us an open field of flowers.
The grass was about knee length for the twins while "Oooh!!!" Emily said in excitement.
"Wow...so beautiful..." Sam was astonish by the beauty of the grassy field.
*poof*
"And....I am back to a girl again!" The girl said with a big smile.
"It's actually much easier to talk to you because we have the same height. I wasn't able to talk to you in your fox form because of your size." Emily laughed nervously with one hand behind her neck.
"I am aware of that...anyways, i wanted to show you something." The girl said pulling both Sam and Emily.
"W-where are you taking us?" Sam asked frightened.
"Just a place where i call home and magical creatures are found there."
"Really where?!?" Emily was thrilled and excited.
"You'll soon find out..." The girl said in a sing-song voice.
The three went out to go where the girl is going meanwhile, there's a man who's been following them for a while...
"Hoo hoo hoo! I thank I found my next target! Not only it's a fox, it's a white fox! Them thangs are so rare these days! Ooh boy ain't it my lucky day!"
The man gathered his things to follow the three into the girl's home.
[Back to the three children]
"We are almost there! Be patient guys!"
The entrance had a curtain of vines covering the entrance with flowers flowing onto it. As they entered the vines, they came across a huge log, which looked like a bridge leading to waterfall. They walked across the pathway, being very careful so that they won't fall into the river below. Approaching the waterfall, the girl guided them by going around to the back of the waterfall, where there's a small tunnel in the small corner. The girl signaled them to go through the tunnel and crouched down in order to crawl inside. After crawling through the tunnel, it became bright, brighter than the sun, and their vision became more clearer. A huge tree, right at the heart, backdropped with its golden, leafy branches where it stretches throughout the whole area. The golden leaves shined as little fairies flew around the tree, spreading their magic, which seems like they are trying to protect it. Also, a baby jackalope, a rabbit with antlers, and a baby peryton, a horse with wings and antlers, was seen playing with each other lively.
"Wow..." The twins said in shock.
"Welcome to my home, Golden Grove" The girl said as she introduced us her home.
"Welcome home!" The fairies excitedly shouted out, "We took care of the tree while you were gone, was it hard finding you way back? It took longer than expected."
"Thanks everyone!" Emily said with a relieved smile, "And no I wasn't lost, I was just distracted by these humans. Don't worry, they aren't dangerous!"
"HUMANS?!?!" The fairies cried out.
"Why are humans here? We told you not to interact with humans! Especially bringing them to Golden Grove! Don't you know how dangerous it is to bring people here?!?! Don't you remember the last time you brought that boy 10 years ago? He almost killed our precious tree! Do you really want me to use the "forget me" spell again?" The head fairy scolded the girl.
"Yes...I know..." The girl said sadly, twiddling her fingers, "I am aware of what happened last time...But if you just let me-"
"Not buts! We have two baby animals whose mother has died the last time you brought over your "friend".
This is the last time you'll ever bring humans over again, do you understand, Queen Rose?" The head fairy said firmly.
"Yes..ma'am.." the girl said, downhearted.
"Ahem...sorry to interrupt but it seems as though you forgot we were still here." Emily said annoyed, raising one eyebrow up.
"Yeah...I was wondering if you were going to talk to us or not..." Sam muttered.
"Oh, my apologies guys, We was just discussing about some things." Rose said irritated.
"So...what's this "Queen Rose" business?" Emily said, wondering.
"Don't you remember that I told you that I am the queen of this forest...I was mentioning it when we were playing with the deer family. And my name is Rose, Rose Eclair."
"Well, Queen Rose, it's nice to meet you *bows* but..." Emily put her hands behind her back.
"Please call me just Rose and what?" Rose was curious by what Emily is going to say.
"But can we PLEASE walk around? I wanna explore this place but I can't without you! I don't want to be lost in here!" Emily was eager to get out and explore Golden Grove.
"Is it ok Gwenny?" Rose stared at the head fairy with sad, cute eyes.
"Errm..fine...But be back before sundown!" Gwenny agreed and crossed her arms as they walk towards the trail to the "Freaky Forest".
After five minutes of walking, the three finally reached the forest where vines hang down, flashing different colors. As they walk into the forest, Rose suddenly picked up a scent.
POOF!
*sniff* *sniff*
"I smell something in the air..." Rose points her nose into the air trying to figure out what's she smelling.
"What is it?" Emily was curious by Rose sniffing in the air.
"Yeah, what's up?" Sam became concerned.
"I GOT TO GO BACK TO THE TREE!!!" Emily raised both of her hands and a huge leaf appeared in front of us.
"Get on, hurry!"
The three quickly hopped onto the leaf and immediately flew fast towards the big tree. In a couple secs, they arrived at the big tree and it went chaos. The tree looked like it was dying, the leaves began to turn dull and it became lifeless. Fairies flew everywhere and tried to find a way to fix it.
"What's happening to the tree?" Rose asked to a fairy.
"I don't know! Ever since you left five minutes ago, the tree's been acting up! It's happening again like ten years ago!" The fairy started to lose it and acted all panicked.
*Boom* *Boom*
"Wait was that..." Emily looked up at the skies, "Gunpowder!"
"Gunpowder? I thought no one was following us on the way here!" Sam looked frozen in fear.
"Well...I..." Rose looked like as if she was culpable due to her dark silent expression, "I kind of picked a unfamiliar scent when we were coming over here but I didn't think it was going to be dangerous..."
"WHAT?!? And you didn't tell us?" Emily yelled surprised.
"I just didn't want to scare you guys...I am sorry..." Rose said in guilt.
"It's ok Rose, and now's not the time to be saying our apologies, we need to find this person who have entered Golden Grove."
"Wow...this new land is amazing! I just can't wait till I get my hands on these little critters and catch them thangs!" A hunter said evilly as he came out of some nearby bushes.
"Or we don't need to look, here he is." Sam pointed at the man towards the entrance.
"What are ya kids doing here? Get Outta my way!" The hunter angrily said.
"No, it's you that should get away! I, Queen Rose, command you to do so! Or else there'll be consequences!" Rose said with her head up high.
"Like I am going to listen to some kid! Lemme kill them little critters! Tonight's going to be a feast!" The hunter said as he pointed the gun at Rose.
"Ok...If you say so...Fairies...." Rose said pointing at the hunter, "ATTACK!!!"
"A-As you wish Queen...charge!!!!" All the fairies said as attacking the hunter.
"We'll help too Rose" Emily said pumping with full of energy.
"Yeah...me too..." Sam said as he held some rocks in his hands.
"OK LET'S DO THIS!!!" Rose yelled as running towards the hunter.
The hunter was now being attacked by the fairies, Rose, and even the twins, Emily and Sam. Rose began to attack the hunter by kicking dirt onto him, the twin started throwing rocks at his weapon which causing to fall and break, and the fairies used their magic and created vines to tie him up. With the vines tied around the hunter, he couldn't move a muscle and knew that he shouldn't mess with them anymore...
"Ok, I give up!" The hunter said exhausted, "I'll leave this dang place and leave ya alone! Just please let me go!!!!"
"Ok I will, if you agree to never, ever, tell anyone of this place, you hear me?" Rose said lifting his chin, with an angry expression.
"Yes, yes, I will ma'am..." the hunter agreed with a terrified face.
"Good. Fairies, let this man go!" Rose said as she untied the vines.
POOF!
*Growling*
"Ahhhhh!!! These critters are crazy!!!" The hunter yelled as he ran out of the Golden Grove.
"And that's what you get for messing with us! Hah! Take that hunter!" Rose said with confident, "Oh yeah, I almost forgot.."
Rose then approached the withered, dull tree. She held one of the dying branches and kissed it. Then suddenly, a yellow glow started to burst out from the roots of the tree and thus, brought the tree back to life! The leaves when from being lifeless to a bright, gold art piece, the branches became stiff again, and the tree started to flow with sparkling energy! The fairies celebrated this event and the mythical baby creatures were saved from being hunted.
"Thank you for giving life to our tree again, Queen Rose." The fairies bowed down and cheered on their success.
"It was fun with you guys today but..." Emily said with her down.
"But what, Emily?" Rose asked concerned.
"I'll miss you guys..." Emily cried as tears were flowing down her face.
"W-what? W-why? You guys could always visit us...I-I don't understand..." Rose said as she start to tear up.
"It's ok Emily, I'll tell them..." Sam said as he confort him, "Well it's that...today was our last day and we are leaving to go overseas...So we...can't see you guys anymore..."
"Oh I see...Well at least we could still wait until you come back..." Rose said as tears began to appear, "Right...? You'll come back and see us again?"
"Yes I will..." Emily said calming down. "But the last time we will be coming back is in 10-15 years..."
"Don't worry, I'll wait, even if I have to wait for a thousand years!" Rose said with faith in herself.
"Haha...you don't have to do that but thanks!" Emily said, laughing.
"Hey Emily, it's time to go..." Sam quietly said as he tapped her shoulder.
"Yeah...I know..." Emily said sadly.
"I'll take you guys back where we met. Bye guys, i'll be back!" Rose waved at the faires.
"Bye Brave Emily and Courageous Sam! We won't forget you!" The fairies said as they yell their goodbyes.
"Yea...See you guys until next time!" Emily and Sam said smiling at everyone.
So Emily, Sam, and Queen Rose when out the entrance, through the waterfall, over the log, through the grassy plains, passed by the stream, and finally, reached the river where this adventure all started...
"Ok...here we are you guys...the place where we all met..." Rose said with an unhappy expression.
"I'm gonna miss you...." Emily started cracking up in tears as she hugged Rose.
"Yeah...I won't forget every single moment you spent with us, even though I didn't speak much most of the time..." Sam said as he was blushing.
"Haha...you really were the quiet type weren't you?" Rose started chuckling to herself.
"Bye you guys..." Rose started to become depressed.
"Hey, no need to be sad now, let's be happy and who knows? We may come back faster than you think, I promise." Emily said trying to cheer up Rose.
"Hah, that just made me feel better, thanks Emily." Rose smiled at Emily.
"Emily! Sam! We are leaving now! Are you guys ready?" The twin's parents called over the distance.
"Yeah we are!" Emily yelled over to her parents.
"Bye Rose! We will come soon!" Sam said waving to Rose.
"Bye Rose...I'll miss you...I'll come back as soon as I can, okay?"
"Yes I know, bye...until then..."
The two siblings ran over to where their parents were at and jumped into the car. The parents already packed all of their bags for their trip overseas and put them in the truck.
"So where were you two troublemakers doing the whole day? I heard that parts of this forest have some supernatural things happening here." Their mother asked in curiosity.
"Oh you have no idea Mom...but until next time...."
