Chapter 4

Mr. Spencer frowns as he gazes at the number on his phone screen. He shrugs and answers, "Hello?"

"Mr. Spencer?"

His eyebrows knit farther together if that is even possible, "Yes ma'am, who is speaking?"

"Police chief Gwen. Are you the father of Canley May Spencer?"

He quickly stands and rushes out the door, "Yes ma'am, what's going on?"

"Your daughter and her baby have been involved in a car accident. A drunk driver hit them when in a parking lot." The chief explains.

"Baby?"

"Yes sir. They are both in the Martin hollow hospital. Miss Spencer is unconscious and has a broken shoulder. Ashley, the baby is fine besides a few scratches," She informs him.

"Uh, okay, my wife and I will be there as soon as possible."

"Very well." With that the line goes dead leaving Mr. Spencer frozen to his spot on the porch.

"Nathan? Everything okay?" Cullen's voice asks urging him to turn around.

He turns but avoids eye contact, "Uh, no, Canley- she's been in a car accident," He pauses, "And she has a baby."

Cullen is stunned to silence. Canley has a baby? She wouldn't get pregnant without being married. Wouldn't she have invited her long time friend to her wedding? Questions swirl so fast it begins to make him feel sea sick. "I'm going with you," He spouts.

Mr. Spencer nods before swiftly moving to the house and informing Mrs. Spencer. Mr. Dallas suggests that everyone got in one vehicle, so they pile into the Dallas' pickup. Everyone prays more the closer they get to the hospital.

When they arrive the Spencers are out before a lamb could shake his tail, Cullen just inches behind them.

"May I help you?" The receptionist asks.

Cullen steps up, "Yes ma'am we are looking for Canley Spencer."

"She is in room 301 right down this hall. Are you related?" The lady points to her right with a sad sympathetic smile.

"These are her parents I'm just a friend." He nods.

"Very well then."

"Thank you," He calls over his shoulder as the three make their way down the hall. Once at the door labeled 301 they all take a deep breath. "Y'all go, I'll wait right here."

Canley's head pounds as she struggles to open her eyes. Light quickly causes her to snap them back shut. The last thing she remembers is getting Ashley's car seat out of her back seat. Ashley. Where is she? Is she okay? Determined to know she forces her eyes open. A woman in a white coat rushes over wearing a small smile.

"Hi sweety, I'm glad you are awake. Can you tell me what happen?"

She shakes her head.

"Okay, that's alright. What is the last thing you remember?"

Canley takes a deep breath willing her voice to work, "Ashley, I got her out of the car."

The doctor nods, "Okay, that's good-" She is about to continue when Canley cuts her off.

"Where is she? Where is Ashley?"

The doctor smiles, "She is in a different hospital room. She is doing very well with only a few scratches. Now, you were in a car accident, a drunk driver flipped and the car landed on your shoulder. The Miss Gwen, the police chief is going to come talk to you, okay?"

Canley nods taking in everything she is being told. As the doc finishes there is a knock at the door. She opens it to reveal the chief as well as a nurse with Ashley.

"Hello Miss Canley, I have talked to Chief Mitchell in your home town. He filled me in about Ashley's situation," Canley nods letting the woman know she was paying attention. "She is a beautiful baby. Now, I have spoken with your parents and informed them as well."

Canley groans remembering her parents and all she had to explain to them, "Was anyone else with them?"

"There was a couple and their son as well." Gwen nods.

Once again she groans, this is not how they were suppose to find out! The nurse holding Ashley smiles and holds the baby out to Canley. She takes her in her 'good' arm and snuggles the sleeping girl to her.

"Would you like to see your family?" The nurse asks.

"Yeah, sure." She agrees, might as well get this done sooner rather than later.

Everyone exits leaving Canley and Ashley alone for a few minutes, "You are so cute little girl."

The creaking of the door makes her glance up. She sees her parents and Cullen just behind them. He didn't appear quiet the same as he had two years ago. He is more muscular with a more rugged look to him. His green eyes are still as green as they were two years ago.

"Sweetheart," Her mom speaks first.

Canley smiles a very small smile, "Mom."

"How you feeling?" Her dad asks stepping closer and plating a kiss on her forehead.

She shrugs her good shoulder, "Better." Everyone looks to Cullen, the only one who hasn't spoken.

"We are going to go to the cafeteria, we'll be back," Her mom announces taking her dad's hand. They kiss her forehead before leaving the room leaving her and Cullen alone except for Ashley.

"So, uh, how have you been before, um, this?" He stutters not sure what to say or how to say it.

"Good, I guess, pretty normal until two days ago. So where are you at now?" She asks trying to keep the conversation flowing.

He smiles, something he felt comfortable talking about, "I'm at Cold Foot Ranch outside of Jade Hollow."

"Ah, so I guess you got informed about everything."

He pulls up a chair not far from her bed, "Yeah I got most of it. Sorry to here about her mom." He motions to the baby sleeping in her arms.

"Yeah I guess we are all just happy she's not suffering anymore."

He nods not knowing what to say. An awkward silence falls as they each stare into space. Ashley squirms in her sleep causing Canley to reposition her. He watches in amazement at how at peace she was with the little bundle of joy. As they were growing up together neither had interest in children and definitely weren't as natural with them as she was now.
