Chapter Thirty
One week later, the government requested a court hearing. Jason was unsure why they wanted it to be done quickly, but he assumed it was to have him and Greyson behind bars as soon as possible.
The hearing was held in Toronto, as they all of been staying in various hospital rooms throughout the city.
Most of them had been provided with clothes, but some were allowed go out with security to purchase items, as the government assumed they'd steal. However, he was not given the privilege just like Greyson. They had been confined to the same room, which had not gone well. Although Greyson may have been attempting to change, but Jason doubted they would ever be on good terms.
Jason's steps echoed against the courthouse stairs, each one louder than it should have been. The two officers flanking him felt heavier with every step.
Inside, teal-painted walls and polished wooden panels reflected the fluorescent lights in dull streaks.
He passed six closed doors on the left, eyes flickering to the wide windows opposite. Outside, people in suits and dresses streamed through the big doors. They didn't know the chaos that had come before—or the chaos Jason feared was still to come.
The police officers stayed outside one of the rooms, giving him some space. Most of the others involved in the incident were already there, but one person stood out.
"You look like a hooker!" Will laughed, pointing at Mia.
She stood with her hands on her hips, wearing a black dress so short and tight it had no business in a courtroom.
"Mia, we've been to court before, so you should know the type of clothes we wear," Eden said calmly, though she looked on the verge of slapping Mia.
Jason looked around as some were okay with what was going on, while others were pacing nervously, like Emma. Angel and Mallory both were both trembling, while the crackheads seemed fine with the outcome.
"I wasn't going to spend money on something I'd never wear again," Mia said. "It's court, duh."
"I don't want to go to jail," Mallory panicked, staring at Jason. "I don't want to be beaten up or sent to another Uden Academy in England!"
"I doubt they would send you to jail. Greyson and I are the most at risk," Jason sighed.
Mallory turned to look at him, her hands clenched into fists and shaking. She had her black hair tied back in a braid and was wearing a purple and black dress made of velvet. She clutched a small black purse and a small red stress ball.
"Won't Uden just pay for our charges?" Mia asked. "They always did that when we got caught."
"Ashley burned down Uden, so I don't think they'd pay for us on that behalf," Eden replied, her hands laced together.
Bryce looked like he was about to burst out laughing, while Jason scanned the hall. The only remaining freaks, which were only a few, were all present at this hearing. Most of them had died from the illness or at the hands of Ashley herself.
A tall man in a navy blue suit and black tie, with black dress pants, approached them. His black hair was neatly styled and he adjusted his glasses as he walked over.
"I'm Chris. I'll be representing you during this hearing," he announced. "You're going to be questioned about your involvement in the Simcoe Incident. Some of you more than others, depending on what your name is attached to."
He glanced at all of them.
"This will he a lengthy hearing, as there is video evidence and findings from investigators. I understand that this is a stressful situation, especially for those of you under the age of fifteen who still possess supernatural abilities."
Jason knew he would likely be one of the people asked multiple questions. He's a high rank who had burned Maverick's fingers off and was responsible for burning Luke's arm. It didn't help either that he created a hole in the power plant or many other crimes he probably couldn't list.
"I'm not a freak, so why am I here?" Mia asked dumbly.
"Due to your delinquent behaviour at Uden Academy, your name has been mentioned numerous times. The court is aware of your past actions, Mia Ortiz," Chris explained. "You'll be seated together in one single group. The court wants your testimony compared side by side, not separate."
Emma and Angel looked like they were about to faint. This was not going to be an easy matter to get past, considering everything that had happened.
"Jason Harp. Greyson Newman," Chris said, glancing toward them. "You've both been named repeatedly in witness statements regarding the power plant incident."
He opened the thick wooden doors, revealing a large room filled with people. The jury appeared to be twice the size it normally would be, seated on opposite sides.
Chris took a seat at nearby table nearby, and Jason could feel all eyes on them.
Security guards stood near the door, and the entire session was being broadcast live on television.
There was a female lawyer who sat at the second table. It wasn't that they were challenging anyone because it's their own decision on everything. The male judge sat high on a podium, observing as people took their seats.
Jason lowered himself into the bench between Emma and James, aware of how small the space suddenly felt. The moment he sat down, the room felt louder.
He could see Emma's hands trembling in her lap, and James's shoulders stiffened like he wanted to disappear.
Every whisper from the crowd felt like a knife pressing into his chest. He gripped the edge of the bench, knuckles white, and counted silently under his breath to keep from panicking.
"All rise," the judge called.
They all stood along with the many in the crowd. Some people in the crowd glared at them with hatred in their eyes.
This wasn't just judgement from Simcoe, but from most of society for everything that happened. The looming possibility of being hated by society weighed heavily on his mind, whatever the outcome of the trail.
"This court is convened to examine the Simcoe Incident and determine individual responsibility for the destructions, death, and use of unauthorized supernatural abilities during the eleven-month containment period," the judged said, looking at the female lawyer named Daisy.
"I'd call Emma Cabot," Daisy called.
Emma stood unsteadily her movements stiff, her eyes wide, while she chewed on her lip. The first person they have to question is the one whose anxiety is awful.
"Emma, we heard you played a crucial in the Simcoe incident. Your healing ability allows you to heal wounds such as broken bones or burns, correct?" Daisy inquired.
"Yes," she mustered out.
"You've previously healed a compound fracture where the bone was exposed," Daisy said. "How did you manage the healing process?"
Jason's stomach turned as he remembered hearing about the gruesome injury with the bone sticking out. Stripper was the one injured, which Melany and Cindy actually did most of the healing since Emma kept throwing up.
"Your honour, can I mention something?" Bryce said, shooting up a hand. "Emma here gets nauseous very easily, even at the mention of words. Daisy is addressing a memory Emma vomits every time she thinks about."
"Counsel, avoid lines of questioning that risks medical distress to the witness," the judge said sharply.
Daisy looked through a small notebook and nodded. "Can you tell us about the storm that many of your peers have mentioned? If I'm correct, the snow would burn and the wind would cause the flu?" she inquired.
"Some of the burns were deep enough that healing them left scarring, depending on their severity," Emma said. "The illness would cause a cough where they'd normally cough up blood, which would indicate they'd die."
"And according to witnesses, many died from this illness caused by Ashley Iverson, according to witnesses?" Daisy asked, to which Emma nodded. "That's all for now."
Emma stiffly walked back to her seat, appearing on the verge of passing out again, but she somehow managing not to.
"Next, I'd like to call Jason Harp," Daisy announced, as he saw someone come stand next to her.
The courtroom quieted again as Jason stood.
He stepped into the witness position, feeling the weight of the cameras settle on him like pressure against his skin.
Chris didn't look at him. The prosecution lawyer—Daisy—did.
"Jason Harp," she began. "State your name for the record."
"Jason Harp," he said.
"You are classified under confirmed supernatural ability registration?"
"Yes."
"And you were present inside the Simcoe containment barrier for eleven months?"
Jason hesitated only a moment.
"Yes."
"We've heard that you played a huge role in this incident. My partner, Thomas, would like to ask you some questions," Daisy said.
"You were present at the hydroelectric power plant during the incident, correct?" Thomas began. "And you used your supernatural powers there?"
"Yes," Jason said.
"Describe your actions immediately before the structure was damaged."
Jason remembered Greyson trying to restore power. Then the cold. Then Henry collapsing while he attempted CPR.
He swallowed hard. "Greyson and I... we were fighting. We don't get along," he admitted, voice tighter than he intended.
His eyes flickered to the crowd; whispers and pointed stares made his stomach twist.
Thomas's question hit like a hammer. "And... did you miss when you were firing at him? Or did something else cause that hole?"
Jason jaw clenched. He remembered the chaos, the metal melting, Luke dodging.
"I caused the hole... before Luke destroyed the inside of the building," he said, forcing his voice steady.
Inside, panic clawed at him. Every word felt like it could push them all one step closer to jail.
Thomas turned to look at Daisy. "Was there an external impact on the pipe system before it failed?"
Jason remembered the event leading up to the darkness that lasted for month. He recalled how people were frightened in the darkness that couldn't be prevented, and how his body went flying in the cold building from a pipe bursting.
"Luke had thrown a hammer at a pipe, causing it to burst. It injured about five of us, and I had a metal piece fall me. I would have died if Emma hadn't healed me," Jason explained.
Maybe that could convince them to let them off the hook. It was true that the explosion had not only endangered his life, but also Scarlett's due to their injuries.
"What can you tell us about Simcoe being reduced to ash? It had been suggested that your fire may have been the main cause," Daisy inquired.
Jason hesitated, trying to form an answer that wouldn't sound completely insane. He could manipulate fire—burning blue light—but he hadn't caused the fire that destroyed Simcoe. The only fire he remembered was from his fight with Greyson, which has barely spread.
"The reason for this was the purple substance," Jason explained. "That substance granted us our supernatural abilities. The thing inside Ashley gained them and wanted to kill everyone inside the barrier."
Everyone who had been trapped knew Divina and Ashley. But the crowd? They stared blankly, clearly thinking he was making it up.
"Are you referring to seismic events involving Bella Foster and Cassandra Newman-Russell?" Daisy asked. "The ones witnessed described and an earthquake?"
It made his heart ache hearing Daisy call Bella instead of Divina. In that moment, he felt the memories flooding back, especially the letter he had read repeatedly.
"They were the creations that stemmed from the chaos that happened," Jason explained softly. "Fallen stars, Divina called them."
"Were there incidents during which your abilities caused harm to individuals?" Daisy asked. "Specifically involving burns to hands and arms?"
Jason glanced toward the gallery. Someone here had talked. Someone always did.
He swallowed hard. "I... I lost control over my powers."
A few gasps echoed through the courtroom. Some parents leaned back in their chairs, clutching their handbags.
Whispers spread like wildfire
"He did what?"
"That poor kid..."
Jason clenched his fists under the table, wishing he could disappear. He hadn't directly caused Luke's arm go be sawed off, but no one here would know that psycho.
Daisy glanced at her notes and continued, "That's all for now. We'll call one more person before we switch sides. Mia Ortiz is next."
Jason sat back down, and he knew this was a dangerous situation. This wasn't because of her delinquent behaviour, but because this was a girl who acts like a drunk when she isn't.
Mia attempted to climb over the seating area that kept them, but she fell. Instead of getting up casually, she laughed. Eventually, she managed to wobble up in her black heels before finally plopping down onto the stand with a loud sigh.
"Mia, we've heard that you used to engage in delinquent behaviour. Did you engage in any of this behaviour during the incident?" Daisy asked.
Mia stared off into space, as if she had forgotten what Daisy had said. Instead of answering automatically, she blew into the microphone. This was not a good start for any of them.
"Delinquent behaviour? I've done a lot of that, but I mostly drank and got high. People would ask for drugs, but they would use them for bad reasons," Mia admitted.
A murmur ran through the courtroom. Some parents covered their mouths in shock. A few younger teens in the back leaned forward, whispering to one another.
Bryce slapped his forehead, muttering under his breath, while Will struggled to hold back laughter. She basically admitted that she had done criminal behaviour.
"Was one of these people Ilya Bava?" Daisy asked, revealing revealed a picture of Ilya.
Jason remembered hearing about Ilya's overdose, but he had never actually seeing the body. Apparently, she had gotten drugs from Mia for free, but ended up overdosing on them.
"Yeah... it might've been some girl on anxiety meds. I warned her, but she still overdosed. I deal, I don't control the drugs," Mia said, shrugging.
The crowd looked disturbed, but there could have been many reasons for that—Mia openly admitted to selling, her dress, or her behaviour in general.
"Did the individual who overdosed request a known dosage or substance?" Daisy asked. "Were they warned about these risks?"
"I sell what people ask for," Mia said. "What they do with it after isn't on me."
Jason watched as Eden walked over to the stand and forcefully grabbed Mia's ankle as she fell off the seat. She gave Mia a hard, but Mia just started laughing.
"Miss Weber, we are not finished with Mia's questioning," Daisy interjected.
"This isn't about delinquency," Eden snapped. "You're cleaning up someone's else's experiment and calling it justice."
She had that dangerous look in her eyes, and the room fell silent except for Mia's laughter. Jason and the crowd knew that Eden was considered one of the most dangerous among them.
Jason watched as Eden dropped Mia's ankle and made her ways towards Chris, who was sitting next to an empty chair. Jason noticed some of the police officers in the courtroom slowly approaching.
Eden's hands shot out, grabbing the nearest chair. Within seconds, she lifted it above her head, eyes blazing.
The courtroom froze. Whispers died. All eyes locked on her.
The police reacted instantly, rushing forward. Eden's scream cut through the silence ask they struggled to restrain her.
"Calm it!" Bryce shouted.
Within moments, Eden was forced down into restraints. The chair clattered back onto the floor where she had lifted it, still vibrating slightly from the impact.
She glared hard as she was led out.
"Court will recess immediately," the judge said, hammer striking once.
Outside, Eden sat in between two police officers. Unlike most people who were in shock, the crackheads were the calm ones, like normal.
"You literally called them out by saying that. They should have just hosted a court hearing for you in general," Bryce snarked.
"You owe me five dollars, Will! I told you Eden would snap in court!" Mia exclaimed.
"Eden will be wearing the handcuffs for the rest of the trial," one police officer stated.
Jason stayed seated long after the bailiffs moved people out. If this is what the courtroom looked like, he didn't want to imagine what "justice" looked like outside it.
Scarlett watched the numerous adults bustling around, pouring coffee into paper cups as she reached for a sugar cookie from the snack table. Most of the adults wore expressions of stress or anger, clearly rattled by Eden's outburst exposing they all had tried to ignore.
"They don't have very many snacks," Greyson remarked dryly.
They scanned the small assortment on the table just outside the courtroom. It consisted of coffee, some cookies, and some veggies that looked like they were turning brown.
Scarlett nodded. "They are all tense now that the truth is out," she said.
Greyson grabbed an apple from the table. Scarlett knew she would probably be next for questions because they had the child who had caused harm to adults.
She had watched Cassandra's confession on YouTube about her lashing out at the adults by calling them selfish.
"It will just loop back to the same blame for Jason and me," Greyson remarked.
She reached up and caressed his cheek. "I'll tell you how ugly your jumpsuit is," she said quietly.
She was sure he'd end up in jail unless some miracle happened. Although that didn't stop the truth about Luke's death, she doubted his parents would press charges.
"Hopefully it's not pink," he muttered.
She leaned in and kissed him, even with people watching. They could judge them—many knew that it was their child who caused injuries but also saved lives.
She pulled back to stare at him as she took a bite of her cookie. It tasted good just having food back, even when they had the joys of when Cassandra physically brought in Foodland.
Scarlett's attention shifted as she noticed Nevaeh walking toward them as she glanced at the corner of her eye.
"They want to ask you two next. Both about Cassandra along with the incidents that have happened at Uden," Nevaeh stated.
Nobody ever knew about some of the incidents that happened. She'd guess the one about the bullet situation, but nobody knew about testing the substance except some freaks.
"I think they're putting Bella's mom up along with some scientists that have tried to figure out the substance. If Lola admits her husband did create it and she knew, we slide, but we don't know if she's like the housewife," Nevaeh said.
"Wasn't it some drug products plus the fallen star incident?" Scarlett asked.
"They wanted some drug specialists on our side to ask Lola questions or something. We apparently have another lawyer like them for questions directed at the police and whatnot," Nevaeh rambled.
One by one, people began filtering back into the courtroom, their conversations dying into nervous silence.
Scarlett sighed and ate the last bit of cookie before sliding beside Greyson.
"Now that we are back, we'd like to have Scarlett Russell to the stand," Daisy announced. "Scarlett, it had been reported you gave birth to Cassandra during this incident. Multiple witnesses claim your daughter abilities beyond anything else previously documented."
"Cassandra was born different," Scarlett said. "Stronger than any of us from the moment she opened her eyes."
She had a range of abilities, but they were almost enhanced, comparable to what they all had. She had her own bright light that could burn Ashley to a crisp in seconds or throw her from long distances in the air.
"Are you testifying that Cassandra discussed her plans with you before major incidents occurred?" Daisy asked.
Cassandra told Scarlett almost everything. The only thing she hid were the parts she believed couldn't change.
Cassandra had been born into a collapsing world and still died saving it.
"I knew what she told me, such as how we had to stop Ashley," Scarlett stated.
"Did you know Cassandra intended to trigger the earthquake?"
"Objection," Chris interrupted. "Assumes facts not established."
"Sustained."
Scarlett had always known Cassandra didn't just want Ashley stopped—she wanted justice. That's why those earthquakes were made: because she didn't like adults and how they treated them.
"On a different note," Daisy interjected. "In a prior statement, you claimed you could identify differences in supernatural ability levels. Is that correct?"
"As I've said, I rank them as levels of power since each has a different feeling," Scarlett said as there were whispers in the crowd.
"That's all for now," Daisy said.
Scarlett went back to her seat. She knew her parents weren't in the crowd, waiting to see the results. They would probably want her in jail, or they didn't even notice that she was stuck in that place for almost a year.
"We'd like to call up Greyson Newman," Thomas said.
Greyson slid past her and up to the stand. When he stood, Thomas had a thick stack of papers on the table. She assumed it had to be the large amount of claims from everything they had done.
"Greyson, there has been a lot said about you," Thomas started. "Multiple witnesses described you as someone willing to use fear, manipulation, and violence to control others."
The beginning was when it was about gaining Simcoe only while performing daring experiments that might get someone dead.
"I have the orders, but Luke was usually the one who carried them out," Greyson said.
"Who gave you the authority to decide those people deserved punishment?" Thomas asked.
"Well, there was someone who tried to cover up a murder they committed. Other times have been for doing something wrong, like shooting kids in the plaza," Greyson said.
"Are you referring to Matthew Fields?"
Scarlett didn't have a clue who that was. Maybe it was some of those thugs in the background.
"Stick?" Greyson asked. "Yeah, Stick killed Vickie and then used Henry, and some thugs tried to hide her body."
Thomas leaned forward slightly. "So, you believed your actions were justified? You think that was how they redeemed themselves?" he probed.
Greyson shook his head once, jaw tightening hard enough for Scarlett to notice.
"No, punishment was shown as how someone broke the law. Luke did the punishment, but I just ordered it. However, all of them are dead."
"We are well aware of their deaths," Thomas replied. "What I would like to understand is what transpired at the power plant incident," he inquired.
"The whole building flooded," Greyson said. "Which most of the building froze. We tried to get the hydro back on, but that didn't go as planned when it went out."
Scarlett wondered if he was leaving out Luke's death because his parents would probably jump with joy that sadist isn't alive. Or it could be that admitting he killed him because he hurt her is a big step in change.
"Regarding your classmate Luke," Thomas began. "It was reported that he died at the power plant. However, there are claims suggesting he became a follower of Ashley after his death. Can you confirm you were responsible for his death? If so, what led you to take such drastic actions against your friend?"
Scarlett nearly laughed at the idea of Luke being Greyson's friend. She knew he was nothing but a henchman that just wanted to enjoy the pleasure of those getting tortured.
"I killed him," Greyson said flatly. "Because he almost killed someone I love."
Even if that witnessed him guilty for his crimes, he said his true reasoning, rather than dancing around the question.
"That's all for now," Thomas said.
Greyson stood and sat back on his chair. She grabbed his hand and squeezed it.
"Before we proceed, we would like to call up Eden Weber to the stand," Daisy announced.
Eden had been the one to expose the truth behind everything, as she, like anyone else, knew the reality reason for this trail why this is really taking place.
She walked to the stand, still wearing handcuffs, with police officers close by. It was no surprise that her old behaviour was coming to light.
"Multiple witnesses described you as influential among the students inside the barrier. Do you deny that?" Daisy asked.
"I guided people toward God," Eden replied sweetly. "Some just needed more encouragement than others."
"How did you go about helping them?" Daisy asked, but her voice seemed nervous.
"I shared the wonders of God with them, and if I saw a way to change them, I did. I helped Matthew change before he sacrificed himself, while Bella chose isolation due to her controlling nature," Eden explained.
"Did you use a different method with Bella Foster?" Daisy probed.
"I decided to drug her when she refused to listen. I didn't even drug her much, but she chose isolation like I said. The golden king and golden queen ended up sacrificing themselves for redemption," Eden stated, raising her eyebrows.
Scarlett knew that the girl on the stand was the girl she saw beating up Luke in the hallway. She was someone forced blame onto others for her own benefit. If she had Greyson's power, they'd all be dead in the courtroom.
"I used sleeping medication that I found in the daycare. I don't know why it was there, but I knocked her out because I don't beat up people like I used to anymore," Eden clarified. "This trail seems far more interested in assigning blame to surviving minors than investigating elsewhere."
Eden reached calmly inside her pocket and unfolded the document. She handed it to the judge with an innocent smile.
"I found a document back at the Simcoe hospital."
The judge's expression darkened as he lowered the paper slightly.
"Where did you get this?" Daisy demanded.
"From the hospital records," Eden said sweetly.
"Your honour, we cannot authenticate this document."
The judge frowned as murmuring spread throughout the crowd.
"This document states that St. Mary's Hospital knew Ashley Iverson possessed supernatural abilities before the barrier incident."
The courtroom stilled, the earlier murmurs replaced by uneasy silence.
The same adults who had judged them moments ago now looked terrified that the blame might circle back on them.
Eden had just exposed something the adults desperately wanted buried.
"This is a breach of confidentiality!" Daisy snapped, shooting to her feet so fast her chair scraped against the floor.
"I was searching for my own information in a hospital that was destroyed. So, instead of blaming the freaks, wouldn't it be smarter to blame the pharmacy, the doctors, researchers, and nurses that knew?" Eden inquired with an innocent smile. "We could list theft and destruction all day, but why should we? All the facts are pointed at those who know and the creator of the substance. We did what we could to stay alive."
Mia and Will burst into laughter until Bryce grabbed both of them and smacked their heads together.
"How about we quit with all the small talk or questions and turn to the responsible ones in this case?" Eden sneered.
Daisy hesitated before speaking up. "Well..." she began, but the colour drained from her face.
The adults weren't staring at Uden's reformed Catholic, but the girl police officers knew in a heartbeat by her last name.
"Ashley burned Uden Academy to ash—"
"Just answer the question asked," Thomas interrupted.
Eden smiled faintly. "That was my answer."
"I think that's enough, Eden," Thomas cut in smoothly, though tension flickered behind his expression.
Scarlett knew this was just like when she exploited to parents at Uden for what their child did. It could be from showing a picture, telling them a lie, or even a video for the simplest things.
Eden rose before anyone could stop her.
"No, Thomas," she snapped. "I'm not done talking."
Eden's expression didn't change.
"Don't acted surprised that we know so much," she said. "You should have known the information would be blown once the crackheads were back together After all, we're Uden Academy's top delinquents for that reason alone."
Scarlett knew Eden's information may get them somewhere or it may end them in jail faster than they all should be. Either way, they will be facing some type of charge.
Seems Eden called out everyone with the document the crackheads found.
What has been the funniest moments in the series?
