7. Blindfold

Josh was laying in bed when his mom called for him and Jordan to leave their rooms. "Boys!"

Josh set his math homework down on his bed next to him and left his room, making his way to the living room. His parents were standing there with huge grins on their faces.

"I was playing Call of Duty what do you want?" Jordan groaned as he walked out.

"Is Jordan getting tested for ADHD?" Josh asked hopefully.

"Do you really think you need tested, honey?" Their mom asked Jordan seriously.

"Nah," Jordan replied at the same time that Josh said 'yes'.

Their dad gave them a look. "We'll discuss that later," he told them before the smile made its way back onto his face. Josh watched his father hold up a blind fold and his became confused.

"Do I have to put that on?" He asked nervously.

"I wonder if Mom and Dad have used that," Jordan whispered into his ear.

Josh made a retching noise and smacked Jordan in the head.

"Boys," their mom sighed.

"Sorry," the replied in unison.

"And yes," their dad walked towards Josh and began tying the blindfold around his head. "You do have to wear this. Your mother and I have a surprise for you."

Josh waited patiently while his dad tied the cloth. He felt a hand grab each of his and knew they belonged to his parents.

"We'll guide you, honey. Just walk," his mom assured.

Josh trusted them since Jordan wasn't involved in the situation. He felt them guide him out the door and down the front steps.

"Holy shit!" Jordan gasped.

"Your father got a bonus with our move..." his mom began as she untied the blindfold.

"So we decided to do something nice to show you how appreciative we are about you not giving us issues about moving your senior year..." his dad finished.

The cloth was removed and Josh's eyes widened.

"Is that a car?" He squeaked.

"Yes," his mom laughed.

"For me?"

"Nah I think we'll give it to Jordan," his dad teased. He put the keys in Josh's hand. "Go get in. Get a feel for it."

Josh hugged his parents tightly before hurrying over and unlocking the door.

As soon as he got in and shut the door behind him, he fell in love with the car. He glanced around and noticed it had everything he wanted.

Suddenly, Jordan got in the passenger side. "This will be nice to get rides to school in," he nodded thoughtfully, as if he were the one buying the car.

Josh let out a groan. "I forgot you existed. This moment was almost perfect."

Jordan grinned. "Oh I'm never going away, big bro. I'll be here to annoy you forever and ever."

Josh grimaced. "And you've ruined the new car experience," he spoke as he got out.

He realized his parents had gone back inside to let him have his moment. He was about to join them when he saw Jenna walking up the driveway. "Hey, Josh," she smiled, hands in the pockets of her jeans.

"Hey!" Josh grinned.

Jenna raised an eyebrow. "No way. Is that yours?"

"Yeah," Josh smiled. "Just got it. Like a minute ago."

"It's nice. What's her name?"

"Sweet thang," Jordan replied. "Just like you, baby."

Jenna nodded with an amused look on her face. "Okay," she clicked her tongue. "Well... maybe not."

Josh thought for a moment before a snort left his nose. "Cartherine."

Jordan raised and eyebrow. "And I'm lame?" He let out a low whistle and turned around before walking back inside.

Jenna let out a giggle. "I think Cartherine is perfect."

"Anyway. What brings you to my humble abode which is next to you humble abode?"

Jenna giggled once again. "I was actually coming over to ask you if you wanted to hang out with Tyler and I tonight. I tried texting you but heard you guys from my bedroom window and wanted to come investigate."

It was a Friday so he didn't have to worry about school tomorrow. Plus, he figured this was the reason his parents wanted him home so he didn't need to be free anymore.

"Let me check with my parents," he told her before walking back inside.

He spotted his parents in the kitchen, starting dinner. "How do you like the car, son?"

Josh smiled. "It's perfect. Thank you guys. I appreciate you both so much."

"Of course, sweetie," his mom hummed. "You deserve it."

"I was um, actually wondering if I could go out tonight."

His parents both stopped what they were doing and gave him funny looks. Probably because he never really had friends before to go do things with. He would be just as surprised as they were. "With who?" His father asked.

"My friends Jenna and Tyler. Jenna lives right next door and her mom's my math teacher. Tyler's her best friend and he sits next to me in math," he explained, letting them know that he wasn't talking to people he shouldn't be.

"Oh! Those were the kids you were talking about in the car this morning," his mom spoke, suddenly remembering. "Yes, of course. Have fun, honey. Just make sure to be back by midnight."

"Wouldn't want anything to happen to you," his dad added.

Josh let out a small laugh. "We life in small town Colorado and my friends are the some of the most harmless people I've ever met. I'll be back by midnight but I promise I'll be fine."

His mom nodded. "Just be smart and safe. We love you."

"I love you guys too! Thanks again!" Josh responded as he walked back out the door and shut it behind him.

Jenna was standing in the same exact spot as she was before but this time she was typing something on her phone. She finished up just as Josh approached her, hands in the pocket of his jeans just like hers were earlier. "We good?" She asked.

"Perfect," Josh smiled.

"Great. We're just gonna go back to my house if that's alright with you. We could go to Tyler's but his parents have company over and he wants to feel less awkward."

Josh laughed. "Understandable."

And so the two walked back to Jenna's house— Josh with a smile on his face and the excitement of seeing Tyler coursing through his body.

He couldn't explain why befriending Tyler was so important to him or why it had such a positive impact on him.

But he was just glad they were on good terms now.

And he hoped things stayed that way.
