36. Hurts
Josh was in the process of getting ready for work when his doorbell rang. With a confused look on his face, he made his way down the hall. "Jor! Is Rylee coming or something?"
"No?" Jordan replied. "Why?"
"Just wondering. I don't know who would be here," he called back, going to the front door and opening it. His heart broke at what he saw.
Tyler was standing there with his arms folded insecurely and tears were running down his face. He noticed Josh's work clothes and his lip wobbled. "I forgot you had work and I came here impulsively and—"
Josh cut him off with a worried face as he pulled Tyler into the house and in for a hug. "Jesus, Ty. What's wrong?"
Tyler didn't reply as he wrapped his arms around Josh and sobbed into his shoulder. Josh ran his fingers through Tyler's hair and gently soothed him. "Hey, it's okay," Josh spoke softly. "Let me call into work and I'll take care of you. Something's obviously wrong."
Josh pulled back and led Tyler into his room. He sat him down and kissed his forehead gently. "Stay right here, I'm gonna go call in the hallway."
Josh was about to leave when Tyler gripped his hand tightly. "Please. I didn't leave you when you needed me," he whispered out, his lip wobbling again.
Josh's heart broke and he nodded. He grabbed his phone and Tyler continued to tightly hold his hand as he called in. Josh just said he was sick and his boss was a little annoyed he was calling in twenty minutes before his shift but he hoped Josh felt better.
Once he was done with that he quickly changed into a pair of sweats and sat in his bed, situating both himself and Tyler so they were sitting comfortably. Josh sat behind Tyler while Tyler sat between his legs and Josh continued to play with his hair. "Okay, can you tell me what happened?"
"It was Jenna," Tyler croaked out hopelessly. "It was Jenna who did it."
"Did what, baby?"
"Turned me."
Josh froze, his hand stopping in Tyler's hair. "What?"
"Yeah. She said when she found me in the woods I had lost so much blood I was going to die so she turned me."
Josh was quiet for a second. "Damn."
"Is that all you have to say?" Tyler asked, turning his head.
"I'm sorry I'm just a little in shock. How did you find out?"
"She told me. She slipped up and told me. She wasn't going to. I told her I never wanted to see her again."
"Ty..." Josh sighed. "Don't you think that's a little harsh?"
"No."
Josh began massaging his shoulders in hopes to calm him down. "She didn't have any bad intentions—"
"She lied to me, Josh," Tyler snapped, moving away from him and turning so they were face to face. His eyes were full of tears still. "She watched me struggle so fucking much over these past eight months and didn't say shit."
"Lying to you about it wasn't okay but she didn't go out of her way to turn you. Jenna's not a bad person."
"Yes she is she—"
"Saved your life, Tyler. I know you're upset she lied to you and I'm not saying that was okay but honestly, if I had been in her position, I probably would have done the same thing."
"Are you fucking kidding—"
"Look me in the eye and tell me you wouldn't have," Josh told him sternly. "Look me in the eye and tell me if you had found me on the brink of death, bleeding out, and in danger that you wouldn't turn me."
Tyler sniffled but didn't reply at first. Finally, he did. "I can't. You're right. But I'm in love with you, Josh. I would do it because I can't be without you."
"And she did it because she couldn't live with herself knowing she didn't try. She probably didn't think you'd try to do what you did a month after it happened. I think she feels worse about it herself than you could make her feel."
"Why are you defending her?" Tyler asked him quietly.
"I'm not. Lying about it was shitty. She should have come clean earlier. But I see both sides of it. We've all fucked up, Ty. The past is in the past and you can't change it. You two are gonna be alive forever and she's a really good friend. It would be a shame to let her go."
Tyler didn't reply again at first. "It hurts," he sniffles. "It hurts really bad. I don't think I'll be able to forgive her for awhile. Saying I never wanted to see her again was a heated moment thing," he sighed. "I'm sorry for being a baby."
"Don't be. Getting turned was something traumatic and finding out one of the people you trusted the most did it has to hurt. I'm glad you came to me though," Josh grabbed one of Tyler's hands. "You don't have to apologize at all and you don't have to forgive her right away but I think it's something you should try to move on from."
"Okay."
"I'm not trying to cause issues between us either. Think about it this way," Josh began. "If you hadn't met her then she wouldn't have so insistent on us becoming friends and we probably just be two people who sit together in math and not hopelessly in love with one another."
That caused Tyler to chuckle and Josh sadly smiled and wiped the tears on his cheeks. "Yeah. A lot of good things came out of it."
"Plus I think this has made you stronger. Feeding off of people to survive isn't ideal but you get a lot of cool things with being a vampire y'know. You've been starting to look on the brighter side of things and I think you just need to look a little bit more.
"If I could forgive Rylee then I think you can get back to a good place with Jenna. It's the same thing you said about Jordan and Rylee being happy. We're happy too and Jenna played a huge part in that."
Tyler nodded. "Okay. I'll see how things play out. Thank you. I love you."
"I love you too," Josh kissed his lips softly. "Now let's cuddle. I didn't take work off for nothing."
