31. Hopefully
Tyler and Jenna were laying on Jenna's couch, tangled up together in nothing more than a platonic way. Tyler always felt better when he was physically close with her. It felt like they had a bond. A bond bigger than her just taking him under her wing.
He was laying behind her, his arms wrapped around her stomach protectively as he used one of his hands to rub her thigh occasionally. They had been closer than this before so it wasn't anything new. He knew Josh was okay with it because one, he wouldn't cheat, and two he was one hundred percent gay so nothing would happen from it.
Jenna let out a small sigh. "Hey, Ty?" She spoke up.
"Yeah?"
"How does it feel to be in love with someone like Josh? Y'know... someone not like us..."
Tyler thought for a moment before responding. "It's scary. It's really scary. He could choose to call me a freak and be done with my bullshit and fuck off at any moment and I wouldn't ever blame him I don't think. He's always more than understanding and even offers to let me feed from him—" Tyler almost paused, thinking of the time he actually did. Neither boy had told Jenna about it because they felt she would be disappointed in them. He didn't say anything about it once again. "—but I don't."
"Good."
Guilt creeped up at Tyler but he forced it away. "It's hard too," he continued. "Like what happens if we do become high school sweethearts and want to get married or something? Does he get turned? Do I let myself outlive him while I painfully watch him get older?"
Jenna stopped Tyler's now nervous thigh rubbing by grabbing his hand supportively. "I think you'll cross that bridge when you get there. I know I keep saying that and I know I keep saying to give things time but time is one of the few things that genuinely helps. And I know what ever choice you make will be thought out and the choice you think is best."
Tyler smiled and kissed the top of her head. "Thanks."
"Of course."
The two were about to resume the movie when they were cut off by Tyler's phone going off. He saw it said Josh was calling so grabbed it, putting it to his ear. "Hello?"
"Tyler," he breathed out. His tone made Tyler's stomach drop. "I know you're at Jenna's but I drove over. Can you come out to my car?"
Tyler sat himself and Jenna up with a concerned look on his face. "Yeah. Will I be back? Would you rather I drive us to my house?"
"I just want to drive around a little. You'll be back. But I'm freaking the fuck out and need to talk to you."
"Okay," Tyler got up and went over to get his shoes on. "I'll be out in a few minutes."
"Thanks," Josh replied in a strained voice before hanging up.
"What's going on?" Jenna asked worriedly.
"I don't know," Tyler replied. "He said he was freaking out and asked me to come out to his car. He's waiting at the end of the driveway. Do you mind?"
"No not at all, it's obviously something important," she justified. "Let me know if there's anything I can do to help, okay?"
Tyler nodded and thanked her before leaving her house and hurrying out to Josh's car. As soon as he got in and the door was shut, Josh was backing out and making his way out of the neighborhood.
"Josh? What's wrong?" Tyler asked, feeling like something was really, really wrong.
Josh didn't answer and he continued to drive silently until they were pulling up to a park a little ways away from his house. It was only a little past ten so Tyler wasn't too worried about anything happening.
Josh parked the car but he didn't turn it off since he still needed the heat to keep him warm.
"Josh?" Tyler began cautiously.
Josh leaned his head against the steering wheel and began sobbing.
"Woah," Tyler instantly began rubbing his back. "Take a second. You don't have to tell me anything right away."
Josh cried for a few minutes, eventually sitting up and going to Tyler's arms as he finished crying there. Tyler tried to soothe him and talked lovingly to him while he broke down.
Finally, Josh pulled back and wiped his eyes. He took a deep breath. "Jordan got turned," he whispered out.
Tyler's eyes widened. "Oh my God."
"Yeah," Josh's lip wobbled. "At first I was freaking out and then he told me to calm down because he loves being like that—"
"He loves it?" Tyler scoffed.
"Yeah. He called you a wimp for resenting it and he told me he wasn't going to do anything to me but he needed my support. I can't do this," he breathed out. "My little brother and my boyfriend are going to live for fucking ever and everything is different and it's already so hard being with you—"
Tyler sat back. "It's hard being with me?" He asked, his tone broken.
Josh realized what he said his eyes filled with tears. "I'm sorry," he began. "I didn't mean it like that."
"How did you mean it then?" Tyler asked, keeping his voice level. Josh was going through a lot at the moment and Tyler knows better than anyone that emotions can get the best of people and make them say things sporadically.
"I just feel like I can't compete. There's always going to be this underlying thing which —when it comes down to it— is you being dead and me being alive. I'm still trying to make sense of it three months later. It doesn't make sense."
"I know what you mean," Tyler looked down. "I'm sorry."
"It's not your fault," Josh assured. "I love you for you and I'm going to support you the best way I can. It's just really hard sometimes just like it's probably hard on your end. But I'm willing to stick it out."
"Me too," Tyler smiled, reaching over and wiping the tears from Josh's cheeks. "Who did it? To Jordan?"
"Rylee."
Tyler froze, his heart stopping. Well, if it could stop. "What?"
"Yeah. We all thought she was so sweet," Josh let out a humorless laugh.
That's when it dawned on Tyler. "Josh, does she have an older brother?"
Josh nodded. "Yeah I think so. I've never met him but he's like two years older than us."
"Josh..." Tyler realized. "I think that's the guy. Who turned me in the woods and from the movie theater that night. That's why she seemed so familiar. They look alike," he looked at his boyfriend with wide eyes. "And that's why her last name sounded familiar. He was a senior when I was a sophomore. Oh my God."
Josh's eyes widened as well. "So is her whole family just full of vampires?" He asked in a stressed voice.
"I guess so," Tyler blinked, sitting back in disbelief. "I guess her parents were both vampires and then had kids."
Josh put his head in his hands and let out a loud and frustrated groan. He removed his hands. "What the fuck?" He yelled. "This isn't supposed to happen. My boyfriend isn't supposed to have to cancel plans so he can go drink blood from animals, my little brother isn't supposed to outlive our whole family because he's immortal, and my little brother's girlfriend isn't supposed to be teaching him that taking blood from innocent people all the God Damn time is the right thing to do!" He continued to yell, hitting his steering as he spoke the last few words.
"Josh," Tyler grabbed his arm. "Calm down. The way you're acting isn't going to help."
Josh's eyes filled with tears and he slumped back into his seat. "I don't get it, Tyler. Why was this supposed to happen to me? Finding out about Jordan is what's sending me over the edge. Apparently he has a weird amount of control and willpower for a new vampire but that's almost scarier. He knows whatever he does is intentional."
"And he's primarily feeding from people..." Tyler trailed off.
"Exactly," Josh sighed. "And I have to live with him. I can't trust him anymore, Tyler. I don't know what to do."
Tyler sighed as well and repeated what Jenna had said. "Time," he spoke finally. "Time is all you can give."
"That's easy for the guy who's supposed to live forever to say."
Tyler rolled his eyes. "If you just give things time then you'll find a solution eventually. Jenna told me the same thing and I thought it was bullshit but look at me. I gave things time and now I'm with an amazing boy that I love very much that I can be completely honest with."
"Yeah and that is also a human. A fatal flaw for someone like you," Josh spoke quietly.
"You think me being with you is flawed?"
Josh let out another sigh. "Jordan talked about how awesome he finds being a vampire is and I'm just saying that if you looked at it from the same perspective he's looking at it, I'm useless to you. I'm inferior."
Tyler looked at him. "Josh, I want to be able to be human again. If anything I'm inferior to you. You have to always worry about something I'm doing or could do. Just because you aren't cursed like me doesn't mean that we aren't a good couple, okay?"
"Okay," Josh nodded. "I'll give things time like you said and hopefully everything will work out."
"Hopefully," Tyler agreed.
