15. Weird
Tyler walked into school, spotting Josh speaking to Jenna. Tyler's heart swelled at the sight and he walked up to them.
However, when he arrived he noticed a betrayed and hurt look on Josh's face. "Hey guys," he smiled. "What's up?"
Josh shot him a look and scoffed. "Shouldn't you know?"
Tyler became confused. "I don't—"
A look of disgust overcame Josh's face. "Jenna told me. All of it."
Tyler's face paled but he tried to keep up the act. "All of what?"
Josh took a step back. "You're a... vampire?" He accused.
Tyler began panicking. He looked at Jenna. "Why?"
"Why did I do what? Tell him the truth? That you been lying to both of us?" She asked, the fact that she was faking her hurt obvious.
"Jenna you're—"
"Over our friendship," she spat before walking off down the hallway.
Tyler looked at Josh, tears filling his eyes. "Josh," he tried. "We're friends, remember? Our date?"
Josh curled his lip in disgust. "You're a freak."
Suddenly, Tyler gasped, sitting straight up in bed.
It was a dream. Simply a dream.
Tyler put his head in his hands and let out a breath. He should have known it was a dream. There's no way Josh would react like that. There's no way Jenna would tell him, she was the one who told Tyler that Josh couldn't find out. There's no way they would say anything like that... right?
Tyler still needed to sleep to properly function but he didn't need anywhere near as much as he used to. Maybe due to the fact that his body adapted to staying up later to hunt.
Whatever it was, he was able to run on four hours of sleep just fine. His eyes caught the time on his alarm clock: 4:45. There was no use going back to sleep now. He was probably just going to freak himself out again.
Sighing, he contemplated calling Jenna. She was the only person he could talk to. His only real friend. He didn't know what he and Josh were. That was still complicated.
Tyler grabbed his phone and clicked on Jenna's contact. He held it to his ear. It only rang a few times before she answered. "Hey. What's up?"
"You're awake?" Tyler asked, surprisingly.
"Yeah. I woke up and couldn't fall back asleep."
"Same," he sighed. "Can I ask you a question?"
"Shoot."
"Would you... um... are you going to tell Josh? About us?"
"Of course not. Why would I?"
Tyler let out a breath he didn't know he was holding. "I just had a really fucked up dream," he sighed, laying back down on his bed.
"Wanna talk about it?"
"It was just... you told Josh about me and acted like you were normal and then he called me a freak. I know the reactions in the dream weren't very likely but what if he does find out? I really like him, Jenna. I kissed him last night on our date."
Tyler had to pull his phone away from his ear to avoid going deaf from Jenna's squeals. "No way!"
"Yeah," Tyler smiled. However, his smile faltered when he remembered what he was talking about. "But Jenna... I am a freak... and if anything happens with me and Josh... he'll have to find out eventually."
"Okay..." Jenna trailed off. "Let's just cross that bridge when we get there, alright! No use in worrying about it now."
"Okay," Tyler sighed. "Anyway, what do I do about Josh? Won't things be weird?"
"Not if you don't make it weird," she replied.
"But—"
"Ty, you're overthinking. Just go to school and see what happens. Then you can go from there."
"Okay."
---
A few hours later, Tyler was walking into school.
He saw Josh and Jenna talking by the library. Deja vu from his dream hit him. He almost started panicking until he saw Josh laughing and smiling as he spoke to Jenna.
With a nervous look on his face, Tyler walked up to them. "Hey."
Josh looked over at him with a wide smile, his face turning a slight shade of pink. "Hi."
Jenna sent Tyler a reassuring smile. "We were just talking about you, actually."
"All good things I hope," he laughed nervously.
"What's wrong?" Josh asked him.
"Nothing. I just had a weird dream. Still a little shaken up."
"Anything I can do to help?" Josh asked, sincerity evident in his voice.
That warm feeling from his dream returned to his chest. He was crushing hard on Josh. "No. Thanks though."
"Of course."
The three were silent for a moment until Jenna cleared her throat. "I'm gonna go talk to my mom. I'll leave you two to talk."
"Jenna you don't— and she's gone," Josh nodded. He looked back at Tyler, that dopey smile returning. "Hey."
"We already said hi," Tyler laughed.
Josh rolled his eyes and smiled. "I had a good time last night. You're cute."
"Yeah?" Tyler raised an eyebrow.
"Yeah."
"Well for the record, you're cute too."
"Oh am I?" Josh chuckled. "Thanks."
The two stared into each other's eyes for a moment until Josh's flicked down, the same blush returning.
"So—" Tyler began.
"We—" Josh tried at the same time.
The two laughed before Tyler held a finger up to signal Josh to wait. "I'll speak and then you can. That why there's no confusion," he explained. "I was gonna say... where does that leave us?"
"I was gonna say the same..." Josh trailed off. "I don't know. Where do you want it to leave us?"
Tyler was silent for a moment. Everything he had been worried about surfaced and his chest suddenly felt tight instead of warm. "I um," he swallowed. "I don't know. For now. Can we just be Tyler and Josh? Just for a little bit? Until I can calm my life down enough to like... properly ask you to be my boyfriend...?"
Josh's face lit up. "You want me to be your boyfriend?"
"Yeah. Once everything settles a little though. Maybe we should go on another date or two. Get comfortable with one another."
Josh smiled. "I like that. Tyler and Josh."
"Yeah. Tyler and Josh."
