14. Perfect
One thing to note about Josh is that he has never been on a date before.
His first kiss was in middle school when he lived in Wisconsin during a game of spin the bottle.
So it is also easy to assume Josh has also never had a boyfriend before.
And it was currently 7:40, 20 minutes before Tyler was going to be there, and he was panicking.
He had been sitting in his bed, not doing anything in particular, when he got the text from Tyler.
And Josh knew they way his heartbeat quickened and his stomach felt like it was butterflies meant he did like Tyler back. Having Jenna question him at the dance sort of made everything click.
But he also knew this was almost like a new first impression. Their actual first impression went terribly but now they were at a point where they were going on a date together.
Josh could not fuck this up.
He was already on relatively thin ice with Tyler. Like if this didn't end well then he would probably never speak to him again. And then Jenna wouldn't. And then he would be sad and friendless again.
He rubbed his face with his hands and let out a sigh. He really needed to get ready. He was sitting in a towel, water dripping everywhere.
Suddenly the door opened and Jordan walked in. "Hey, Jo— woah! Didn't know you were naked! Lock your door next time, bud!"
Josh rolled his eyes. "I'm in a towel all you can see is my chest. What do you want?"
"I was just gonna ask what you wanted for dinner so I could propose the idea to mom. If you want it too it's more likely she'll say yes."
"I won't be here for dinner. I have a date."
"Holy shit! With who?"
"Tyler..." Josh blushed.
Jordan smiled at him. Genuinely smiled at him. "Are you panicking?" He asked sincerely.
"Yeah," Josh admitted.
"About?"
"Everything; but it started with not knowing what to wear. He said casual—"
Jordan walked over to his brother's closet and opened it. A moment later he pulled out a hoodie, black skinny jeans, and Josh's Vans. He dropped them all on the bed. "Perfect."
Josh agreed. It did look perfect. "Thanks, Jor."
"You're welcome, doofus," Josh shot him a look. "What I can't be too nice to you! Who would I be?"
"A less annoying little brother."
"My big brubber is gwoing up," he cooed. "His first date," he let out a sigh. "Anyway, I'm leaving now so I don't see your dick. I'll go harass mom about dinner by myself. Have fun on your date."
"Thanks."
Once Jordan left, Josh realized that he only had a little over ten minutes to get ready and it was easily the fastest he's ever gotten ready. But, he did check to see how he looked and he did admit, he looked pretty good.
He grabbed his phone, money his mom had given him that morning (another reminder that he really needed a job), and his house key before making his way down the stairs.
He saw his phone light up with a text so he checked it, smiling.
Tyler
I'm here
Josh was about to walk out when a voice stopped him. "Honey?"
He turned to see his mom in the kitchen. "Yeah?"
She smiled and walked over, wrapping him in a hug. "Have fun on your date."
"Thanks, Mom," Josh smiled back before breaking the hug and finally leaving the house.
He spotted Tyler but became confused when he realized he had Jenna's SUV instead of his own car. He set the thought aside and made his way to the car, getting in with a nervous smile. "Hi," he greeted.
"Hey," Tyler grinned, his eyes twinkling.
"Is there a specific reason why we have Jenna's car?"
Tyler's smile only grew. "It's a surprise."
Josh's smile grew as well. "Alright."
The two made small talk as Tyler began driving them towards their destination. It surprisingly wasn't awkward that time. They both knew what the intentions were of the date so it was more comfortable.
Josh began to get excited though when Tyler pulled up to the entrance of a forest. It has information about trails and such. "We're not walking on the trails or anything," he informed, taking the road that had arrows to campsite and fishing spots. "But I know an area that doesn't have anything or anyone around. That's where we're having our date."
"Should I be worried?" Josh teased. "That you're going to murder me or something?"
Tyler's smile faltered but only for a second. "Nah," he joked back but his voice sounded nervous. "Too much work."
Josh brushed it off, assuming he was just nervous about the date.
Tyler kept driving up the path until he parked in a parking lot right in front of a lake.
He got out so Josh did as well, almost gasping at how breathtaking it looked.
The sun was almost completely set but there was still a little bit of reflection hitting the water. There were trees all around them but not in an ominous way. In a comforting way.
He turned to see Tyler popping the trunk and Josh's eyes only widened more when he saw Tyler turn on the fairy lights strung up in the back. The seats were done so they had room to sit. He saw blankets and a picnic basket and a laptop. "Oh my God, Tyler..." he trailed off, at a loss for words.
"Do you like it?" Tyler asked nervously. "I had Jenna help me because I've never taken anyone on a date before—"
"It's perfect."
Tyler grinned and hopped in, closest to the seats. He pat the spot next to him, inviting Josh to join.
Once Josh sat down, he noticed that there was more room than he thought, but it was still small enough that they had to sit close to one another. Maybe that was intentional.
"What's in the basket?" Josh asked curiously.
Tyler got this goofy grin on his face as he opened it and pulled out a bag of Taco Bell. "I remember you saying your favorite fast food place was Taco Bell. I put it in the basket to make it look fancy."
Josh's heart warmed at the fact that Tyler remembered that. "Aww," he gushed. "Thanks, Ty."
Tyler beamed and opened up his laptop, typing in his password. "We have to watch a DVD since we don't get service here."
"Damn, it's like you really are trying to kill me."
Tyler let out another nervous laugh as he pulled out three movies from the picnic basket. "I didn't know what type of movies you like to watch so I have IT, Bohemian Rhapsody, and Love, Simon."
Josh thought for a moment. "Why are these all gay?"
Tyler let out a laugh, his cute crooked teeth showing. "Hush," he judged Josh playfully. "You pick or I will."
"Love, Simon."
Tyler put the movie on and set the laptop on their legs. The two ate as they watched the movie. Once they were done, Tyler set the trash aside and they continued to watch.
Since it was later out, it began to get colder and Josh was stupid enough to forget a coat again. The blankets helped but not enough to hide the fact he was shivering.
Without tearing his eyes away from the screen, Tyler took his jacket off and draped it over Josh's shoulders before using his arm to pull Josh closer into his side. It seemed almost involuntary.
"You don't have to—"
"I'm used to it," he replied, his eyes still watching the movie.
They cuddled for about twenty more minutes until Tyler instantly sat up and paused the movie.
"What are you—"
"Shh!" He hushed quickly.
Josh watched as his ears perked slightly and his nose twitched. They were small movements but Josh still noticed them.
"What's happening?" Josh whispered.
Tyler looked at him. "We have to go."
He quickly closed his laptop and shoved everything where they had been sitting before ushering Josh to the front.
Tyler got in a moment later and quickly started the car before driving out of there so fast Josh thought he was going to piss himself.
"Tyler! What the hell is going on?" Josh asked once they were back on the main road and driving away from the forest.
"I uh—" he stuttered, obviously trying to think of an excuse. "It's my curfew."
"Bullshit."
Tyler sighed. "Technically we weren't supposed to be there that late and I heard a park ranger coming. I didn't want to get fined."
Josh let out a snort. "Oh so you're a bad boy?"
Tyler still looked freaked out but had a smile on his face. "The baddest."
The two fell into a silence as Tyler continued to drive. Josh looked out the window but suddenly felt something grab his hand. He smiled when he realized it was Tyler's. Josh gave him a gentle squeeze but no more talking commenced the rest of the way home.
Tyler pulled into Josh's driveway and parked, turning to him with a dopey smile. "Thanks for letting me take you out."
"Thanks for telling me you had a crush on me," Josh replied, making Tyler blush and laugh.
The two stared at each other for a moment until Tyler leaned in and pressed a quick kiss to Josh's lips.
Josh's face was the one to heat up. "Thanks for that too," he squeaked.
Tyler laughed. "Anytime. I'll see you tomorrow, Josh."
The mentioned got out and sent Tyler one last smile. "I'll see you tomorrow."
