THREE MONTHS LATER
"Turn around, look at what you see, in her face, the mirror of your dreams, rhymes that keep their secrets, will unfold behind the clouds," Lucas and Max sang loudly.
Dustin glared at them from the other side of the Byers' living room and Cammie laughed quietly. Max looked over at her and smiled widely. Cammie rolled her eyes fondly at her girlfriend.
"Losers," she said slowly.
Max's smile got even bigger, if possible, and Cammie crawled over, kissing her quickly. Max smirked and stroked her cheek softly.
"Wait, did we get that verse right? It's unfold behind the clouds?" Max turned back to Dustin.
"Yeah, but you're butchering it, so could you please stop?" Dustin sighed.
"So then join in, Dusty-bun," Lucas blew an air kiss at him and he scowled.
"Yeah, come on, Dusty-bun, why don't you join us?" Max teased.
"You guys are so funny, you should be on Carson," Dustin rolled his eyes.
"Can't we just hear your rendition?" Max asked.
"No," Dustin said.
"Please? Just one verse?" Lucas said.
"No. No way. It's reserved for Suzie's ears and Suzie's ears alone," he said.
Cammie kissed Max again before standing up and leaving them to terrorise Dustin. She walked into the living room, seeing Mike and Will hugging while Joyce watched with a sad smile.
"Hey, sweetheart," Joyce smiled at her. Cammie smiled back. "I want you to be singing the carols with us at Christmas so get to work at your voice therapy, alright?" she said.
"Yes, ma'am," Cammie said.
Joyce smiled and looked down at the thin scar on her neck. It was still fresh, considering Robin's stitches had been less than satisfactory in hospital standards and it had actually been a bit more serious than they'd thought, but she was alive and that was what mattered.
It was red and stretched from ear to ear but Cammie didn't really care. The story was that she'd gotten it in the mall fire trying to escape and a burning piece of metal had fallen on her neck. She had been seen as the school hero, boosting her popularity even more, much to everyone else's delight. Cammie hated it now she was in high school. It just gave everyone more of a reason to stare at her and all she wanted to do was blend in, hide in the shadows with her friends and girlfriend so they could have one quiet year.
Of course, she didn't really care because she got to be with her friends and her girlfriend either way but some privacy would be nice occasionally.
"You'll all be coming up for Thanksgiving. Steve said your parents are going away so he's going to drive you and Mike up in the morning and the other guys are gonna come up after dinner," Joyce said. Cammie nodded. "And we're coming down for Christmas, so we'll be able to celebrate," she said. Cammie smiled slightly. Joyce sighed and hugged her tightly. "I'm going to miss having you running around with El and Will," she said.
"Me, too," Cammie rasped. Joyce kissed her temple.
"I love you, sweetheart, and I'm so thankful for everything you've done to save my Will and El and Johnathon and me. You're our family and you always have a home with us if you need one," Joyce said.
Cammie wiped her tears and tapped three times on Joyce's hand.
Her voice progress wasn't going as well as she'd expected. She could still barely say more than two words, much to her disgust, but all of their group communicated with Morse code as often as they could to make Cammie feel included. She loved it, the fact that it was like they had their own secret language, but sometimes she just wanted to be able to talk actual words.
She had so many things to say, especially now Will and El were moving away but she couldn't do it and she hated it more than anything. She couldn't even talk in the void, either. So, she hadn't been able to shout at Callum.
And, to make matters even worse, he had no idea whether her tentacles were the same as that of the Mind Flayer's. Cammie hadn't been at the lab when Eleven opened the gate for the Demogorgon, so it wasn't like any research had been done. Cammie would just have to make her peace with not knowing, but considering their track record, she figured something would happen that would probably her her figure more out about it.
"Cam," El said.
Cammie turned and saw Eleven holding her hand out. Cammie took it and let El lead her outside to the porch. They sat down, Eleven curling into Cammie's chest. Cammie sighed and leaned her head on Eleven's.
"I'm going to talk to you every day," Eleven said.
"The void?" Cammie tapped on her leg.
"Yeah. I haven't lost that one," Eleven said.
"You'll get them back," Cammie tapped. Eleven nodded.
"I know. I'm going to miss you," she whispered.
"I'm going to miss you more," Cammie tapped. Eleven looked up at her with teary eyes.
"Sister," she whispered.
"Sister," Cammie rasped.
Eleven kissed her temple and pulled her onto her feet as Will, Johnathon and Joyce came out of the house to leave Hawkins.
They started hugging them all goodbye, Will and Cammie saving each other for last. He walked over and wrapped her into a tight hug.
"I'm gonna miss you, fruit loop," Will said.
"I'm going to miss you more," Cammie tapped back on his back. "I'll call every day for gossip," she tapped.
"I can't wait," Will smiled tearfully.
"I love you, Will," Cammie tapped.
"I love you, too," Will mumbled.
He let go of Cammie and nodded a final goodbye, getting in the car with Johnathon and Eleven while Joyce got in the mover's van. The others watched as they started driving away.
Cammie leaned against Max's side as her sister and best friend got further and further away from them. She felt like she was losing her family all over again and she couldn't help but cry.
Max kissed her temple and Mike rubbed her arm to try and soothe her.
"It's okay. Thanksgiving isn't too long away," Mike said softly.
Cammie nodded with a sigh, kicking her skateboard over so she could ride on it. Mike, Dustin and Lucas got on their bikes and Max climbed into her own skateboard, then they rode, or skated, away from the Byers' house reluctantly.
Max and Cammie left Lucas, Dustin and Mike on the way, deciding to head back to Cammie's house. Her parents were off on a business trip and Steve was job hunting with Robin, leaving them with the house to themselves.
They let themselves in and Max headed upstairs while Cammie got them some snacks. She jumped up to her room and smiled at Max. She was stood on the balcony, her red hair whipping around in the wind. She was just in shorts and a t-shirt, her usual converse on her feet, but Cammie thought she'd never looked so beautiful in her entire life.
Cammie walked over and slipped her hand into Max's. She tapped a message on her hand.
"You have to tell me something?" Max said. Cammie nodded. "Okay," Max looked at her with a soft smile. Cammie smiled back and kissed her softly on the lips.
"I love you, Romeo," Cammie said.
Max's entire face lit up, grin spreading from ear to ear as tears filled her eyes. Cammie was barely able to string two words together but here she was, stringing four together and confessing her love.
Max kissed her again, dragging her inside so her neighbours didn't see and tell her parents. Cammie waved her hand and the door closed over.
"I love you, Princess," Max pulled away with a teasing smile.
Cammie laughed and shoved her on the bed. She grabbed her pillow and swung it at Max.
"Oh, it's on, baby!" Max grabbed her own pillow and swung it back at Cammie.
Cammie laughed and, in that moment, everything was okay. Everything would be okay. And even if it wasn't, she had Maxine Mayfield as her girlfriend, the best siblings in the world, the best friends and they could get through anything after the past three years of their lives.
Everything was going to be okay.
