3. five

Cammie groaned as the bell on the counter of Scoops Ahoy dinged for the millionth time. She opened her eyes and looked over at Robin. She had her headphones in, trying to translate the Russian thing. Cammie threw a napkin at her.

"Counter," she said.

Robin took her headphones off and walked out to the counter. Cammie closed her eyes again and tried to see if she had any dead Russians in her void to help them translate this shit.

Dustin and Steve were out searching for the Russians but Cammie figured it couldn't hurt to look.

"I hate kids," Robin walked back in after a minute.

"Join the club," Cammie mumbled.

"What are you doing?" Robin said.

"Trying to find a Russian genius," Cammie said.

"In your head?" Robin said.

"Steve didn't tell you?" Cammie opened her eyes and smirked at Robin. "I see dead people," she whispered.

Robin stared at her before laughing. Cammie joined in, knowing full well that Robin was never going to believe her. She didn't even care. It was nice. She liked Robin and how easy things were with her. They just got on really well.

"So, who were the girls who came to visit you yesterday?" Robin said.

"Oh, Max and El. El is my sister and Max is my, uh, best friend," Cammie said.

She wasn't ashamed that Max was her girlfriend. Their group of friends knew, Joyce, Hopper, Nancy, Johnathon and Steve knew, but nobody else knew really how close the girls were. 1985 was just a difficult year to be anything other than straight in public.

Cammie knew Robin would probably be okay with it, but she didn't want to risk losing a friend, or getting herself and Max outed before they were comfortable to go fully public.

"I don't understand this sister thing. Is it Steve's sister, too?" Robin frowned.

"No. I was adopted by Steve's parents when I was six. El is my sister from before then," Cammie said.

"Oh, shit," Robin said.

"It's fine. I'm going to go back to my dead people, now," Cammie said. Robin laughed.

"I'll leave you to it, love," she said.

Cammie winked and then closed her eyes.

Cammie lay flat on the table, eating a handful of jelly beans as Robin repeated their translation so they could decode it.

"The week is long. The silver cat feeds when blue meets yellow in the west. A trip to China sounds nice if you tread lightly. Tread lightly?" Robin said. Cammie frowned.

"Well, that makes no fucking sense," she said.

There was a knock on the back door and Robin opened it with a sigh.

"Delivery for you," a man said.

"Thank you," Robin said.

She grabbed the pen and started signing for the delivery. Cammie frowned at the man. She spotted his logo and her eyes went wide.

"Have a nice day," he said.

"Yeah, you too," Robin said.

He turned and Cammie got up, running to the door.

"Silver cat!" Cammie pointed at the back of his uniform.

A silver lynx logo was on the back.

"Silver cat!" Robin pointed at Cammie. "You're a genius," she said. Cammie flicked her hair.

"I do try," she said.

"You're not gonna believe who Dustin thought was a Russian," Steve walked into the back room with Dustin.

"You did too," Dustin said.

"No, I did not," Steve scoffed.

"Yes, you did," Dustin said.

"No, I did not," Steve said.

Robin grabbed a notebook and Cammie's arm, pulling her out of the shop. They made their way into the middle of the seating area and looked around.

"A trip to China sounds nice. A trip to China sounds nice. A trip to China sounds nice. A trip to China sounds nice," Robin mumbled.

Cammie pointed up.

"Imperial Panda," she said. Robin nodded.

"A trip to China sounds nice. If you tread lightly. If you tread... If you tread..." Robin mumbled. They spun around, looking for something. Robin pointed up at Kaufman Shoes. "If you tread lightly. When- When blue and yellow meet in the west." she looked around again.

Cammie pointed up at the clock with the blue and yellow hands.

"Blue meets yellow in the west," she said.

Robin nodded.

"Cammie, Robin. What are you doing?" Steve said.

"We cracked it," Robin pulled Cammie around to face her brother and Dustin.

"Cracked what?" Steve asked

"We cracked the code," Robin said.

"Look for Imperial Panda and Kaufman Shoes," Robin said.

They were currently perched on a rooftop watching the entrance for the delivery storeroom.

"They're with that whistling guy, ten o'clock," Dustin pointed at a man wheeling boxes into the room.

"What do you think's in there?" Steve said.

"Guns, bombs?" Dustin said.

"Chemical weapons?" Robin suggested.

"Whatever it is, they're armed to the teeth," Cammie said. Thunder clapped above them and they winced. "If my hair gets wet, I'm suing you," Cammie looked at Dustin.

"Why me?" he whined.

"You heard their bloody translation in the first place, that's why," Cammie muttered.

"Hey, what's in there?" Robin tried to grab the binoculars once the door to the delivery room opened.

"It's just more boxes," Dustin said.

"Let me check it out," Steve said.

"No, I'm still looking," Dustin pulled the binoculars away from Steve.

"Lemme see it," Steve grabbed them again.

"Hang on!" Dustin huffed. The binoculars fell out of his hands and slammed against the roof. "Duck!" Dustin gasped.

They all ducked, Cammie praying she hadn't messed up her perfect pony tail with sliding down the wall.

"We've got to go," Cammie whispered.

They nodded and crept off the roof and looped around the back into the mall. They slipped into the corridors behind the stores and Cammie breathed easily for the first time all night.

"Well, I think we found your Russians," Robin looked at Dustin.

"That keycard opens the door, but unfortunately, the Russian with this keycard also has a massive gun. Whatever's in this room, whatever's in those boxes, they really don't want anybody finding it," Dustin explained.

The four of them were sat in the back room of Scoops Ahoy the next morning, Cammie eating her daily dose of ice cream as they tried to figure out how to break into this secret room.

"But there's gotta be a way in," Robin said.

"Well, you know, I could just take him out," Steve said.

"Take who out?" Robin frowned.

"The Russian guard," Steve said. Cammie scoffed. "What? I sneak up behind him, I knock him out, and I take his keycard. It's easy."

"Did you not hear the part about the massive gun?" Dustin asked.

"Yes, Dustin, I did. And that's why I would be sneaking."

"Ah. Well, please, tell me this, and be honest, have you ever actually... won a fight?" Dustin asked with a smirk.

"I kicked Billy's ass more than you did, Stevie. Not gonna work. I'll go," Cammie said.

"Okay, that was one time-" Steve said.

"Twice. Jonathan. Year prior?" Dustin said. Cammie nodded.

"Listen, that doesn't count," Steve said.

"Why wouldn't it? Because it looks like he beat the shit out of you," Dustin aid.

"It was..." Steve trailed off awkwardly.

"You got a fat lip, crooked nose, swollen eye, a lot of blood," Dustin listed.

"Things that all added up," Steve mumbled.

"That just might work," Robin mumbled.

Robin ran to the till and grabbed all of the money out of the tip jar. Cammie watched her with a frown.

"Robin. Hey, Robin! Hey, what- what are you doing?" Steve asked.

"I need cash," she said.

"Well, half of that's mine. Where're you going?" Steve asked.

"To find a way into that room, a safe way. And, in the meantime, sling ice cream, behave, and don't get beat up. I'll be back in a jiff," Robin waved and ran off.

Steve turned and saw Dustin licking his scoop. Cammie rolled her eyes.

"Ew," she said.

"Oh, dude," Steve huffed. He snatched the scooper back. "Come on, man, not my scooper," he said.

He twirled it in his hands and tucked it into his apron with a sigh.

"Hey, Cammie, have you spoken to Max today?" Dustin asked.

"Uh, this morning, yeah. She and El are still hanging out, so I'm leaving them to bond. It's about time they've become friends," Cammie said.

"You'll all be going on double dates, soon," Dustin chuckled.

"Ew, no. The day I go on a double date with my sister, my girlfriend and Wheels, shoot me. I'm serious," Cammie said.

"Have you ever been shot before?" Dustin asked.

"Shot? No. Stabbed, yes," Cammie said.

"What?" Steve said.

"I saw it happen in the void," Cammie waved her hand. "Now, I'm hungry," she said.

"You eat way too much ice cream," Steve muttered, starting to make her another cherry cone, anyway.
