Camden's phone woke her up the next morning. She groaned and answered it.
"What?" she mumbled.
"It's Mike," he said.
Camden lifted her head up, seeing it was six am.
"Wheels, I'm going to fucking murder you. It's six in the fucking morning and school doesn't start until eight," Camden said.
"You need to stay off school and come to my house. It's about Will," Mike said.
Camden groaned loudly over the phone.
"I am so mad at you right now. I'll be there soon," Camden snapped.
"Come through the basement," Mike said.
"Aye aye, captain," Camden said.
She slammed the phone down and rolled out of bed with a groan.
"Honey? You up?" Marissa knocked on Camden's door.
"Yeah, mom. Uh, I had another bad night," Camden said, opening the door and pulling on a fake-sick face.
Marissa put her hand to Camden's forehead and frowned.
"You still have this fever. Okay, downstairs. We're going to check it with the thermometer," Marissa said.
Camden followed her downstairs and into the kitchen where Peter, her father, was pouring coffee into a travel cup for himself and Marissa.
"Hey, kiddo," Peter nodded at her.
"She still has her fever," Marissa said, sitting Camden at the kitchen island.
Camden sighed as Peter immediately moved to grab the first aid box where the thermometer was.
"Did you have another nightmare?" Peter asked.
"Yeah," Camden said.
It wasn't exactly a lie. Since Will had gone missing, Camden's nightmares had become a nightly occurrence. Before his disappearance, she only had them once a month and on the twenty fourth of every month, which was the date of when the fire happened.
"Open up," Marissa said, producing the thermometer from the box.
Camden opened her mouth and let Marissa take her temperature. The thermometer beeped and Marissa pulled it out.
"101.2," Marissa said. "Peter, dear, will you phone the school and tell them she's not coming in today?" she said.
"Of course," Peter said, moving to the phone.
"Come on, honey. Back to bed for you," Marissa said, patting Camden's shoulders.
Camden nodded and headed back upstairs.
"Are you at home today?" Camden asked.
"No, I'm heading out before Steve does with your dad. But you need anything, you call me. Loads of water, okay? And make sure you eat something. If this carries on, I'm taking you to the doctor tomorrow," Marissa said.
"They can't do anything, mom," Camden said, getting back into bed.
"Well, they can try something. This isn't normal. You're never normally like this, not when it isn't the anniversary," Marissa said, tucking Camden's hair behind her ears.
"I'm fine, mom. I promise. I'm just tired," Camden said.
"I know, honey. I know," Marissa kissed her forehead. "Call me if you need anything, okay? I love you," Marissa said.
"I love you, too, mom," Camden said.
"I'll tell Steve he's not taking you again today. I'll be back by seven and so will your dad," she said.
"Okay. See you later," Camden said.
She lay in bed while she heard Marissa and Peter leave, then Steve leave. Then, Camden got up and quickly hurried around to get ready.
She brushed her teeth and washed her face, then brushed her hair and tied half back with a pink ribbon. She got dressed into a pink skirt and white t-shirt, then grabbed her denim jacket and pulled her pink converse on.
"Okay, time to go," Camden said, grabbing her pocketknife and leaving the house with her skateboard under one arm.
"Hey," Camden opened the basement door.
Lucas, Dustin, Mike and Eleven were all waiting for her.
"Sorry I took so long. Had to convince my mom I was sick so the school didn't phone her," she closed it behind herself and sat down on the couch.
"We heard Will last night. Eleven got him on the radio. He was singing that song he always sings," Mike said. Camden's eyes widened.
"Should I stay or should I go now?" she asked.
"Yeah. How'd you know?" Mike asked. She looked at Eleven and then back at Mike.
"I, uh... I passed out last night after a nosebleed. But I was in this black space. I could hear Will singing and then I saw him. He disappeared. And then some man with white hair turned up and-" Camden cut herself off when she noticed the looks the others were giving her.
They were all confused, but excited, like they knew something she had no hope in ever understanding.
"What?" Camden said.
Eleven grabbed her left wrist and yanked the jacket up. On Camden's arm, there was no tattoo like on her own arm, just a scar. She turned her around, pulling up the back of her shirt. At the base of her spine was a 013 tattoo.
"What are you doing?" Camden jumped away.
"You're like Eleven!" Mike realised.
"No, I'm not," Camden said.
"It doesn't make sense. She didn't come from the lab," Lucas said.
"Camden's adopted," Mike said.
"You are?" Lucas and Dustin looked at her. She glared at Mike.
"Yeah. Steve must've told Nancy and she must've told you. Nobody knows because I look like my mom. But I'm not from a lab. I remember my dad. Then the Harrington's took me in," Camden crossed her arms over her chest.
She felt uncomfortable with them all staring at her like this. She didn't understand what was going on, so the fact they seemed to know more than her about who she really was, it was overwhelming.
How could she have been from a lab? She never remembered a lab, only a house with the man from her nightmares.
"What else did you see in the vision?" Mike asked.
"It wasn't a vision," Camden said. "It was probably just a nightmare. I have them all of the time," Camden said.
"What about?" Dustin asked.
"Nothing to do with a lab," Camden said firmly.
"But you have the tattoo and the visions and the nosebleeds. Maybe your dad wasn't really your dad and he got you out the lab. I mean, you don't remember anything from before you were adopted, do you? That's what my mom said, 'cause she and your mom are friends," Mike said.
Camden glared at Mike, clenching her fists at her sides.
"You know nothing about my dad, so keep your fucking mouth shut, Wheels, or I'll shut it for you, alright?" Camden said lowly.
"But how would she have been able to live right in town and blend in under the bad men's noses? It would've been obvious, wouldn't it? So, she can't be from the lab. Not really," Lucas said.
"Exactly. Thank you, Lucas. You're the only person in this goddamn world making sense to me right now," Camden said.
"Then how are we explaining the tattoo and nosebleeds? It's the same thing that happens with El. Do you have powers?" Mike said.
"I'm not a freak, Michael!" Camden shouted.
"It's not being a freak, it's cool," Dustin said.
"No, it isn't. This tattoo is a coincidence, so are the nightmares. Fuck, she's probably using her powers to project them onto me," Camden pointed at Eleven.
"No," Eleven shook her head.
"Can you do something with her? So she believes she's got powers, too?" Mike looked at Eleven.
She picked up the radio.
"More," she said.
"She needs a bigger one," Lucas said.
"The Heathkit at school," Dustin said.
"Let's go," Lucas scrambled to his feet.
"She can't go like this, you idiots. She doesn't look like a girl," Camden scoffed, eyeing the boys clothes Eleven was wearing.
"Shit," the boys said.
"Hey," Mike looked at Camden as the kids made their way to school.
Camden was on her skateboard, with Eleven on the back of Mike's bike.
"What?" Camden looked up from her pocketknife, leaning to the left and flying around the corner on her board.
"I'm sorry for telling them you were adopted. I only know because of my mom. Steve didn't tell Nancy, so don't be mad at him, please," Mike said.
"You had no right to tell them that. Your mom had no right to tell you that," Camden said.
"I know, but I know, and now they do, too. And the tattoo and nosebleeds, it's not a coincidence," Mike said.
"Mike, please shut up," Camden sighed.
"I just don't understand why you've got an issue with possibly being like El. It's cool. She has powers. Maybe you do, too. If you don't remember anything from before-" Mike said.
"I do remember something from before, Michael," Camden snapped. "Did your mom ever open her big-ass mouth and tell you why I had to be adopted in the first place?" she said, jumping off her skateboard.
The boys came to a stop on their bikes and Mike looked at Camden.
"A fire," Mike said.
Camden scoffed.
"It wasn't just a fire. My dad threw me out of the fire to save my life. My dad burnt alive in that house. I don't remember anything about him except that night. I don't know his name or what he did as a job, or even where our old house was. I don't remember my mom, or anything about her. But that does not mean that I came from the lab. Just because I don't remember anything but the fire that killed my dad doesn't mean you get to take him away from me," Camden said.
She wiped the tears on her cheeks and pushed off her board again, heading down the road ahead of the boys and El.
"Do you remember her?" Mike looked at Eleven.
She shrugged slowly.
"She's changed," Eleven said.
"Mike, man..." Lucas sighed, looking at Mike as he got ready to take off again. "Maybe just don't push her on this. It's her dad and the only thing she remembers about him is his death. She isn't gonna be happy if you're right and he was never really her dad at all. I mean, we're kids. What kind of kid can live with that news at this age?" Lucas said.
"Why are you defending her? We aren't even friends with her. I mean, it's Steve Harrington's sister," Dustin said.
"Will's friends with her, and he wouldn't want us to upset her. He wouldn't," Lucas said, taking off after Camden.
"He's right, Mike," Dustin sighed, looking at him. "Maybe don't push it," he said.
"Fine," Mike sighed. "Let's go," he said.
"It's locked," Mike tugged on the door handle to the AV room.
"What, you'd expected Mr Clarke to leave it unlocked with expensive equipment in there? For fucks sake, Wheels," Camden pushed him aside and pulled a hairclip out of her head.
"Boys? And girls," Mr Clarke walked over with a sad smile. Camden put her hands behind her back quickly, flashing him her saddest smile.
"Hey," Lucas looked down.
"The assembly is starting in a minute," Mr Clarke said.
"We know. We're just, you know..." Mike trailed off.
"Upset," Lucas said.
"Yeah, definitely upset," Dustin said.
"We need some alone time," Camden said.
"To cry," Dustin added.
"Yeah, listen... I get it. I do. I know how hard this is, but let's just be there for Will, huh? And then..." Mr Clarke threw the keys to the room to Mike. "The Heathkit is yours for the rest of the day. What do you say?" he smiled. He saw Eleven, dressed in one of Nancy's old dresses, and frowned. "I don't believe we've met. What's your name?" he asked.
"El-"
"Eleanor!" Camden said quickly.
"She's my, uh-" Mike said.
"Cousin-" Lucas said.
"Second cousin," Dustin clarified.
"She's here for Will's funeral," Mike said.
"Ah, well, welcome to Hawkins Middle, Eleanor. I wish you were here under better circumstances," Mr Clarke said.
"Thank you," Eleven said.
"Uh, where are you from exactly?" Mr Clarke asked.
"Bad place-" Eleven started.
"Sweden!" Dustin said quickly.
"I have a lot of Swedish family," Mike nodded.
"She hates it there," Camden said.
"Cold!" Lucas pretended to shiver.
"Sub zero," Dustin nodded. Mr Clarke nodded.
"Shall we?" he said.
"Yep!" Lucas said. They all turned and headed down the hallway to the gym. Dustin opened the door and they stopped in their tracks. It was full already and the principle was talking to the students.
"Abort," Dustin whispered. They tried to escape but Mr Clarke herded them inside. They sighed and sat down at the back of the bleachers.
Camden groaned quietly as she buried her face in her hands, knowing everybody, including Troy and James, would be wondering why she was sitting with Mike and his friends. Still, she was too exhausted to really give a shit about what they thought of her right now.
"Hey! Hey! Hey, Troy! Hey, Troy! You... you think this is funny?" Mike ran over to Troy at the end of the assembly.
Camden and the others followed.
"What'd you say, Wheeler?" Troy scoffed.
"I saw you guys laughing over there. And I think that's a real messed up thing to do," Mike said.
"Didn't you listen to the counsellor, Wheeler? Grief shows itself in funny ways," James said.
"Besides, what's there to be sad about, anyway? Will's in fairyland now, right? Flying around with all the other little fairies. All happy and gay!" Troy pretended to be a fairy and laughed, walking away with James.
Mike ran after him and shoved him down onto his face. Troy groaned and everyone laughed.
"Shit," Camden breathed.
"You're dead, Wheeler! Dead!" Troy shouted, running towards Mike.
He stopped in his tracks and everyone started whispering.
"Dude, Troy peed himself!" someone laughed.
Camden looked and saw he was, indeed, pissing his pants. Everyone started laughing loudly, including Camden.
"Holy shit!" Dustin laughed.
Mike turned back to them and Camden watched Eleven wipe her bloody nose. She smiled at Camden, but Camden turned away. She wasn't weird like Eleven was.
"Hey! What's going on here?" the principle shouted.
"Oh. Mike! Let's go!" Lucas hissed.
The five of them ran out of the gym as quick as they could, Mike dragging Eleven down the hallway towards the AV room for them to hide in for the rest of the day so they could figure out how Eleven's powers would help find Will, or prove Camden was like her.
